What Are the Jurassic Park Movies? The Franchise at a Glance

The Jurassic Park franchise is a saga of seven theatrical films, released between 1993 and 2025, about dinosaurs brought back from recovered ancient DNA and the people who keep underestimating them. Three of the films carry the Jurassic Park name and four carry Jurassic World, so, when someone searches for the Jurassic Park movies, they usually mean all seven. The full grid sits on the how many jurassic park movies page.

Jurassic Park (1993), directed by Steven Spielberg, set the template. Billionaire John Hammond has built a theme park on a remote island, stocked with living dinosaurs made from recovered ancient DNA, and after a worker is killed there, his investors send a lawyer to demand an expert inspection. Hammond invites paleontologist Alan Grant, paleobotanist Ellie Sattler and chaos theorist Ian Malcolm to tour it, and the lawyer and Hammond's two grandchildren come along. The film cost $63 million and grossed more than $1.1 billion worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. Its creatures came from Industrial Light & Magic and Stan Winston, and the last days of shooting overlapped with Hurricane Iniki on September 11, 1992, whose storm footage ended up in the finished film.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) was Spielberg's second turn in the series. John Hammond asks Ian Malcolm, played by Jeff Goldblum, to join a small team documenting the animals on Isla Sorna, the second island where the dinosaurs were bred, and Malcolm agrees only after learning his girlfriend Sarah Harding is already there. Jurassic Park 3 (2001), directed by Joe Johnston, ran only 92 minutes and sent Alan Grant back to Isla Sorna, with Sam Neill returning and Spielberg credited as executive producer. It was the first entry in the saga not based on a Michael Crichton novel. John Williams scored the first two films and Don Davis scored the third, and the full list of composers sits on the Jurassic Park soundtrack page.

The Jurassic World films relaunched the saga for a new era. Jurassic World 2015, directed by Colin Trevorrow, opens twenty-two years after the first disaster, with a full theme park running on Isla Nublar and a new, bigger attraction called the Indominus rex, a genetically engineered hybrid that Trevorrow designed with Jack Horner. It earned about $1.67 billion worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, which makes it the highest grossing film of the seven. Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom (2018), directed by J. A. Bayona, follows Claire Dearing and Owen Grady back to Isla Nublar as a volcano threatens the dinosaurs left there. Jurassic World Dominion (2022), again directed by Trevorrow, spreads the dinosaurs across the world and brings back Grant, Sattler and Malcolm alongside Owen and Claire. Box Office Mojo lists its budget at $465 million and its worldwide gross at just over $1 billion.

Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), directed by Gareth Edwards with a score by Alexandre Desplat, starts a new story five years after Dominion. Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey lead the cast, and the film cost $225 million, according to The Numbers, and has grossed about $869 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. The full table for every film is on the Jurassic Park box office page, and the directors and returning actors are on the Jurassic Park cast page.

The saga also reaches television. Jurassic World: Chaos Theory is an animated Netflix series from DreamWorks Animation, made with Amblin Entertainment and Universal, that follows the Camp Cretaceous teenagers known as the Nublar Six six years after that earlier show. It ran four seasons and 39 episodes, from May 24, 2024 to a final season on November 20, 2025, and season four is set in Biosyn Valley. It is a series and not a film, so it sits outside the count of seven, but it has its place on the Jurassic Park timeline. For the animals themselves, see Jurassic Park dinosaurs, and for the setting of the park films, see Isla Nublar. Opinion on the films lives on Jurassic Park movies ranked and the Jurassic Park reviews page.

Which Jurassic Park Movie Should You Watch First?

Start with Jurassic Park (1993) and watch the seven films in release order, because release order and chronological order are the same. The sequence is Jurassic Park (1993), The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), Jurassic Park III (2001), Jurassic World (2015), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), Jurassic World Dominion (2022) and Jurassic World Rebirth (2025). The numbered lists, with a line of context for every film, are on the Jurassic Park movies in order page.

So, where should a newcomer begin? In my opinion, the 1993 film, because Dominion brings back Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler and Ian Malcolm, and those scenes land harder if you have met the trio in the original. Steven Spielberg's film is also the one that teaches you how the series scares you: the visitors are first amazed by living dinosaurs, and the park only turns on them afterwards. The creatures came from Industrial Light & Magic and Stan Winston, and the final days of shooting overlapped with Hurricane Iniki on September 11, 1992, whose storm footage ended up in the finished film. That mix of practical creature work and a real storm is a large part of why the first film still looks so physical next to the later ones.

The sequels shift the formula, and it helps to know how before you press play. The Lost World opens with a family on holiday at sea whose young daughter is attacked by small dinosaurs on a jungle island, which is a far quicker jolt than anything in the first act of the 1993 film. Jurassic Park III is the shortest entry at 92 minutes, against 129 for The Lost World and 147 for Dominion, and it plays as a rescue mission: Grant is tricked into flying over Isla Sorna by a couple who are really hunting for their missing son. It is also the first film in the saga not based on a Michael Crichton novel, with Spielberg moving to executive producer and Joe Johnston directing.

That being said, a viewer who only wants the newer run can start with Jurassic World (2015), which opens on a fully operating park on Isla Nublar and needs very little background. Colin Trevorrow designed the Indominus rex with Jack Horner, and the opening dinosaur attack scenes were shot at Audubon Zoo in New Orleans, according to Explore Louisiana. ILM handled about 1,000 visual effects shots, according to Post magazine. Fallen Kingdom, directed by J. A. Bayona, is the series' volcano story and is better with Jurassic World fresh in your mind, since it follows Claire Dearing and Owen Grady back to Isla Nublar. Dominion then costs $465 million, according to Box Office Mojo, against $63 million for the original, and you can see that scale in how far it spreads the dinosaurs across the world.

Jurassic World Rebirth (2025) is the easiest of the later films to pick up cold, as it follows a new team five years after Dominion, led by Zora Bennett, even though its target is a restricted island that once housed InGen's research. Its mission, to take genetic material from three giant dinosaurs, one each from the sea, land and air, makes it feel closer in spirit to The Lost World's small team on a hostile island than to the theme park films. The Netflix series Jurassic World: Chaos Theory follows Camp Cretaceous and is optional for anyone who only wants the films. Perhaps the simplest advice is to treat the films as the spine and the series as a side trip, and the Jurassic Park timeline shows where each piece sits.

What Is the Next Jurassic World Movie?

The next Jurassic World movie is in development, and no title, release date or director has been confirmed. It is not filming, so it is not yet in production. Three Jurassic Park films and four Jurassic World films already exist, which would make the next one the eighth film in the saga, but no official name has been announced, and the full status is on the next Jurassic World movie page.

Here is what has been reported, and all of it is reporting rather than studio announcement. TheWrap said on August 6, 2026 that Gareth Edwards will not direct the follow up to Jurassic World Rebirth, reportedly because of creative differences, while Universal's statement only praised the experience of working with him. The same report said David Koepp has already written a script, that Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey are expected to return, and that a search for a new director was underway.

On October 2, 2026, TheWrap reported that J. A. Bayona, who directed Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, is the frontrunner to take over. He has not been confirmed, and Universal declined to comment. Newsweek says Universal has not announced a date or officially greenlit a sequel, and it puts summer 2028 as the earliest plausible window, which is that outlet's estimate and not a studio date. Trailers for the released films, and any for the next one, will be collected on the next Jurassic World movie trailer page.
