What Is The Hunger Games 2012 About?

The Hunger Games (2012) follows a teenage hunter from a poor mining district who takes her younger sister's place in a televised fight to the death. In District 12 of Panem, Katniss Everdeen, who is sixteen, hunts illegally to feed her mother and her younger sister Primrose. Each year the Capitol forces every district to send one boy and one girl to the Hunger Games, and at the reaping it is Primrose's name that is drawn. Katniss volunteers to take her place, and the baker's son Peeta Mellark is chosen as the male tribute.

The two travel to the Capitol, where they are styled for the cameras and coached by Haymitch Abernathy, a past winner and a drunken mentor. That is the whole of the setup, and the film spends its first act on the contrast between a hungry mining district and a city that treats the Games as entertainment. If you are deciding where to begin the saga, the hunger games movies in order guide explains why this film is the usual starting point, and the hunger games movies hub lists every title.

The Hunger Games Soundtrack and Score

James Newton Howard composed the score for The Hunger Games (2012), and the music was released on two separate albums: "The Hunger Games: Original Motion Picture Score" from Universal Records, dated January 1, 2012, and "The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 and Beyond" from Universal Republic Records, released March 19, 2012.

The score album runs 18 tracks and is the release that presents Howard's orchestral work as a composer. The songs album runs 16 tracks and is the companion collection of songs connected to the film. Taken together, the two albums give 34 tracks of music, and they divide the job in a simple way: one release for the composer, the other for the song artists.

Which should you play first? In my opinion, the score album is the more direct way into the film's music, because it is the one that carries Howard's name and the underscore for the story. If you prefer a mix of artists in one sitting, "The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 and Beyond" is the better choice.

For the track listings across the whole saga, see the hunger games soundtrack page.

Full Plot Summary of The Hunger Games (2012)Spoilers

In The Hunger Games (2012), Katniss and Peeta both survive the arena by forcing the Capitol to name two winners. In the Capitol, they train, meet the other tributes and are put on show for the television audience. Katniss scores highly with the judges, and her stylist Cinna makes her a memorable figure with his costumes. In a televised interview Peeta announces that he has loved Katniss for years, which makes the pair look like star crossed lovers and wins them sponsors.

The Games begin in a huge forest arena controlled by the Gamemakers. Many tributes die in the first violent scramble at the supply cache, while Katniss escapes into the woods. She forms an alliance with the young tribute Rue, and the two plan to destroy the supplies of the stronger group, the Careers. Rue is killed, and Katniss mourns her with flowers, a gesture that sparks unrest in Rue's home district.

The Gamemakers then announce that two tributes from the same district can win together, so Katniss finds the wounded Peeta and nurses him. Cato, the last of the Careers, hunts them, and he is killed after a final struggle. The Gamemakers withdraw the rule change, and Katniss and Peeta threaten to eat poisonous berries rather than kill each other. The Capitol gives way and names them both victors. They return home, but the Capitol's leaders are angry that Katniss defied them.

It earned $408 million at the domestic box office and $287 million internationally, for $695 million worldwide, against a budget of $78 million, according to Box Office Mojo. That is roughly nine times its cost, with about 59 percent of the total coming from North America. The Hunger Games 2012 Ending ExplainedSpoilers

Katniss and Peeta win The Hunger Games (2012) by threatening a double suicide with poisonous berries, so the Capitol declares them joint victors rather than lose its winner. The Games had first offered a way out, with the rule change that let two tributes from one district survive together, and then taken it away again once only Katniss and Peeta were left. The berries answer that betrayal: if the rules can be revoked, Katniss reasons, the Capitol has to choose between two victors and none at all. It chooses two.

It could be argued that this is the cleverest move in the film, because it turns the show's own appetite for a love story against the people running it. The star crossed romance that Peeta announced in his interview, and that earned sponsors, is the thing that makes the Capitol hesitate. In my opinion the ending also works because it is not a clean triumph: back in District 12, Peeta is unsure how much of Katniss's affection was real and how much was for the cameras.

The larger consequence belongs to President Snow, who sees her act of defiance as a danger to his control. That sets up Catching Fire, where Snow visits Katniss in person and warns her about unrest in the districts. There is an irony in the timeline too. Chronologically, this film comes after the prequel, in which a young Coriolanus Snow begins shaping how the Games are run, so the man who watches Katniss outwit them is the one who helped build them. The hunger games timeline places both films side by side.

Where Was The Hunger Games 2012 Filmed?

The Hunger Games (2012) was filmed in North Carolina, including Henry River Mill Village near Hildebran, which stood in for Katniss's District 12 home area and the bakery. The production shot at the village in summer 2011, and the Everdeen family's shack was built on site. The former company store played the Mellark bakery in flashbacks. CNBC reported that the production brought more than 60 million dollars into the North Carolina economy.

Trivia: Facts About The Hunger Games (2012)

The most surprising fact about The Hunger Games (2012) is how much of its District 12 was a real place. The mill at Henry River Mill Village had burned down in 1977, long before the production arrived in 2011, and the former company store that played the Mellark bakery was already standing.

Jennifer Lawrence is billed first as Katniss in all four main films, and Francis Lawrence directed the other four films in the series after Gary Ross. The Australian release came a day before the UK and US dates, on March 22, 2012. Box Office Mojo lists the budget as $78 million, and the world premiere took place at Nokia Theater LA Live on March 12, 2012.
