Catching Fire Plot Summary: How the Story Begins

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire begins after Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark have won the 74th Hunger Games and returned to District 12, where both are shaken by what they went through. It is the direct sequel to The Hunger Games (2012), so it helps to have seen that film first (the full hunger games movies in order list explains where each film sits).

President Snow visits Katniss and warns her that her act of defiance in the arena has stirred unrest in the districts. He orders her and Peeta to play a devoted couple on a Victory Tour, and he threatens her family and friends if she fails to calm the crowds. The tour does the opposite. Her speeches and gestures spark more unrest, and Snow is not satisfied.

Back home, Gale Hawthorne is publicly whipped after trying to stop Peacekeepers from beating people. Katniss now has Snow's threat hanging over her family and friends, and a partner in Peeta who has to keep up the act beside her. Snow's answer to a victor who will not behave is a special edition of the Games, the Quarter Quell, which turns a political standoff into a second trip to the arena.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Soundtrack and Score

James Newton Howard composed the score for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), and the music appears on two albums. "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire: Original Motion Picture Score" is a 29-track release from Universal Republic Records, dated January 1, 2013. "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" is a 16-track album from Lionsgate, released on November 18, 2013.

If you want the songs, start with the soundtrack album. Four artists appear on it: "Atlas" by Coldplay, "Silhouettes" by Of Monsters and Men, "Who We Are" by Imagine Dragons and "Gale Song" by The Lumineers. The score album has nearly twice as many tracks, which shows how much of the film's music is Howard's writing, while the songs album gives the film a broader sound.

  • "Atlas" by Coldplay
  • "Silhouettes" by Of Monsters and Men
  • "Who We Are" by Imagine Dragons
  • "Gale Song" by The Lumineers

Catching Fire Summary: Full Plot With SpoilersSpoilers

Snow announces the 75th Games, a special Quarter Quell in which the tributes will come from the pool of past victors. Katniss is the only living female victor from District 12, and Peeta volunteers to go in place of Haymitch Abernathy. In his pre-Games interview, Peeta says that he and Katniss are married and expecting a child, which causes an uproar. Cinna dresses Katniss in a wedding gown that transforms into a Mockingjay, and the Peacekeepers beat him before she enters the arena.

Inside the arena, Katniss and Peeta team up with Finnick Odair and Mags. Mags gives up her life so that Finnick can save Peeta, and the District 6 victor is killed shielding Peeta from mutated mandrills. The group later joins Beetee, Wiress and Johanna Mason. Wiress is killed in an ambush by the Career tributes.

Beetee plans to electrocute the remaining Careers using a wire run to a tree that lightning strikes. Johanna knocks Katniss out and runs off with her tracker, and Katniss then fires an arrow trailing the wire into the arena's roof just as lightning hits. The blast breaks the force field and shuts the arena down, and a hovercraft picks up an unconscious Katniss.

She wakes with Haymitch, Finnick, Beetee and Plutarch Heavensbee, and learns that they are heading to District 13, where a full rebellion is organized. Peeta and Johanna have been captured by the Capitol.

Premiere and Release Dates

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire had its world premiere in London on November 11, 2013, at the Odeon Leicester Square. Lionsgate announced the London premiere in advance and said the film would open day and date in nearly every major international territory.

The US release followed on November 22, 2013, which is the confirmed date from Lionsgate's announcement. The UK and Australian release dates were both November 21, 2013, according to The Numbers. The film was rated PG-13 in the US, 12A in the UK and M in Australia.

The opening weekend was a large one. Catching Fire took $158 million domestically, according to Box Office Mojo, and finished with $425 million at the domestic box office and about $445 million internationally. The full breakdown across the saga is on the hunger games box office page.

Catching Fire Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Catching Fire reveals that the destruction of the arena was a planned rescue by rebels. Katniss wakes in a hovercraft and learns that Peeta and Johanna were taken by the Capitol. She attacks Haymitch in anger and is sedated. In District 13, Gale tells her that her family is safe but that the Capitol has destroyed District 12.

So, what is the twist? In my opinion, it is that the Quarter Quell was never only a contest. The film sets the 75th Games up as a fight between past victors, and the closing minutes show that the arena's destruction was a planned rescue, with Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman) among those who greet Katniss when she wakes. It could be argued that this is why the end of the arena feels so deliberate: a wire run to a single tree that lightning strikes, and a hovercraft that arrives in time.

The sequence is built from the sacrifices that come before it. Mags gives up her life so Finnick can save Peeta, the District 6 victor dies shielding Peeta from the mutated mandrills, and Wiress is killed in the Careers' ambush. Beetee's plan only works because those allies were kept alive long enough to reach the tree. Then Johanna knocks Katniss out and runs off with her tracker, which in hindsight reads as part of the same rescue. Katniss fires her arrow, trailing the wire, into the arena's roof just as the lightning hits, and the force field breaks.

The ending also differs from the first film in a way that matters for the saga. The Hunger Games (2012) closes on a victory, while Catching Fire closes on a loss and a cliffhanger. Katniss escapes, but Peeta is in the Capitol's hands and her home is gone. Cinna's beating by Peacekeepers, just after the wedding gown turns into a Mockingjay, is the earlier sign that the Capitol has stopped treating her as a victor and started treating her as a symbol to be broken.

There is a production angle as well. Gary Ross directed the first film, and Francis Lawrence took over with a $130 million budget, which paid for the Hawaii arena and the finale. The result earned about $870 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, more than the first film took. That is where mockingjay part 1 picks up, with Katniss in District 13 and the rebels asking her to become the Mockingjay.

Perhaps the most useful way to read it is as a bridge film. It resolves the arena, and it hands the open war against the Capitol to the next film. It also sets up the prequel's irony: ballad of songbirds and snakes shows young Snow shaping how the Games work, and here an older Snow uses a rule of the Games against the girl who defied him.

Filming Locations

Catching Fire was filmed mainly in and around Atlanta, Georgia, and in Hawaii. Principal photography began on September 10, 2012, at existing locations in and near Atlanta. The production was then scheduled to move to Hawaii to shoot beaches and jungles for the arena, with a wrap planned for late December 2012.

The Numbers gives Oahu as the Hawaiian location. The same source lists Ringwood, New Jersey, as a further location shoot.

To see where the arena sits in the story, the hunger games timeline places each film in order.
