The Hunger Games Directors

Who Is in the Hunger Games Cast?

The Hunger Games cast is built around Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark and Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne, and all three are billed in each of the four main films released between 2012 and 2015. Woody Harrelson plays the mentor Haymitch Abernathy, Elizabeth Banks plays Effie Trinket, Willow Shields plays Primrose Everdeen, Stanley Tucci plays the television host Caesar Flickerman and Donald Sutherland plays President Coriolanus Snow. All of them sit in the top fifteen billing of all four films, which is a steady line up for a saga that ran for four years.

The Hunger Games (2012)

The first film, directed by Gary Ross, brings in the faces of the Capitol and the arena. Lenny Kravitz plays Cinna, Wes Bentley plays Seneca Crane and Toby Jones plays the announcer Claudius Templesmith. The tributes include Alexander Ludwig as Cato, Isabelle Fuhrman as Clove and Amandla Stenberg as Rue, with Sandra Ellis Lafferty as Greasy Sae back in District 12. Most of this group belongs to the first film alone, so The Hunger Games 2012 has the most self contained supporting cast of the four.

Catching Fire

Francis Lawrence's first film adds the new faces who give the second story its shape. Philip Seymour Hoffman plays Plutarch Heavensbee, Jeffrey Wright plays Beetee Latier, Sam Claflin plays Finnick Odair, Lynn Cohen plays Mags Flanagan and Jena Malone plays Johanna Mason. Kravitz and Jones carry over from the first film. The full billing is on the Catching Fire page.

Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2

The two final films keep Hoffman, Wright, Claflin and Malone from Catching Fire and add the rebel leadership, while Kravitz and Cohen drop out of the top fifteen billing. Julianne Moore plays President Alma Coin, Mahershala Ali plays Boggs and Natalie Dormer plays Cressida. The billing is identical across Mockingjay Part 1 and Mockingjay Part 2, which fits with the two films being shot back to back.

Hunger Games Cast 2023: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

The prequel's top billed cast is entirely new. Tom Blyth plays the young Coriolanus Snow and Rachel Zegler plays Lucy Gray Baird, the District 12 tribute he mentors. Peter Dinklage plays Dean Casca Highbottom, Jason Schwartzman plays Lucky Flickerman, Hunter Schafer plays Tigris, Josh Rivera plays Sejanus Plinth and Viola Davis plays Dr. Volumnia Gaul. Burn Gorman plays Commander Hoff, while Dexter Sol Ansell and Rosa Gotzler play the young Coriolanus and the young Tigris. The story is set about ten years after the First Rebellion and more than sixty years before the original Games. See Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes for the film itself.

New Hunger Games Cast: Sunrise on the Reaping

The new Hunger Games cast for Sunrise on the Reaping is led by Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy and Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, announced by Lionsgate on April 23, 2025 and reported by TheWrap. Jesse Plemons is confirmed as Plutarch Heavensbee, and Glenn Close and Billy Porter are confirmed as Drusilla Sickle and Magno Stift. Mckenna Grace is reported as Maysilee Donner. Variety Australia reported on December 11, 2025 that the ensemble also includes Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Ralph Fiennes as Coriolanus Snow and Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, along with Kelvin Harrison Jr., Maya Hawke, Ben Wang, Molly McCann, Iona Bell and Percy Daggs IV. Lili Taylor is reported in a role that has not been named. Treat every item marked reported as unconfirmed until Lionsgate says otherwise.

Who Directed the Hunger Games Movies?

Gary Ross directed The Hunger Games (2012), and Francis Lawrence directed every film that followed: Catching Fire, both Mockingjay films and the prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Lawrence is also confirmed as director of Sunrise on the Reaping, which makes five films in a row for him if the release holds.

Gary Ross and the First Film

The Hunger Games (2012), directed by Gary Ross, ran 142 minutes on a budget of $78 million and earned $695 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. It is the only film in the saga with a different director.

Francis Lawrence Takes Over

Lionsgate announced Francis Lawrence as the director of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) on May 3, 2012, and production started on September 10, 2012. That film cost $130 million and grossed about $870 million worldwide, the highest total in the series, according to Box Office Mojo. Lawrence then directed The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (2014) and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 (2015), which TheWrap reported were shot together at a cost of $250 million. His fourth Hunger Games film was The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (2023), made for $100 million, and it grossed $364 million worldwide.

Writers, Producers and Composer

James Newton Howard is credited as composer on all five released films, and his return for Sunrise on the Reaping is reported by Film Music Reporter rather than confirmed by the studio. For Sunrise, Billy Ray is confirmed as writer, and Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are confirmed as producers, according to TheWrap. The Hunger Games soundtrack page covers the music film by film, and the Hunger Games box office page has the full grosses.

Who Returns, Who Is Recast and Who Is New?

Sunrise on the Reaping confirms new actors for two roles from the original films, Haymitch and Plutarch, and Variety Australia reports three more recasts: Effie, Caesar and Snow. The reported ones remain unconfirmed by the studio.

Snow is the clearest case. Donald Sutherland played President Coriolanus Snow in all four main films, Tom Blyth played the young Snow in the prequel, and Ralph Fiennes is reported to play him in Sunrise on the Reaping. That would be three actors for one character, and in my opinion it is the most interesting casting thread in the saga, because each actor plays a different stage of the same man. The question is whether the Snow of Sunrise reads as the bridge between Blyth's student and Sutherland's president.

The supporting recasts are easier to compare. Haymitch, played by Woody Harrelson in the main films, goes to Joseph Zada, and Plutarch Heavensbee, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, goes to Jesse Plemons. Effie Trinket, played by Elizabeth Banks, is reported as Elle Fanning, and Caesar Flickerman, played by Stanley Tucci, is reported as Kieran Culkin. It could be argued that Haymitch is the safest recast, since Zada was announced as a lead by Lionsgate, while the Effie and Caesar reports are the ones to watch for confirmation.

Then there is Katniss. Variety Australia reported in December 2025 that Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are expected to return as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. The report does not say how they fit the story, so perhaps the sensible reading is that nothing about their screen time is settled. If you are catching up before November 20, the Hunger Games movies in order page sets out where the prequel sits, and the Hunger Games characters page covers the roles themselves.
