What Is the Plot of Transformers Dark of the Moon?

Transformers: Dark of the Moon is about a crashed Cybertronian ship on the far side of the Moon and the race between Autobots and Decepticons to claim what it carried. The setup below stays inside the first act.

A spacecraft called the Ark crashes on the far side of the Moon in 1962, and the American government secretly sends the 1969 Apollo 11 mission to investigate it. Jump to the present day and Optimus Prime learns that a fuel cell the Decepticons are hunting came from that ship. So, the Autobots travel to the Moon, where they find their former leader Sentinel Prime, along with technology tied to a device called a Space Bridge.

Back on Earth, Sam Witwicky has a different problem. He is struggling to find a job and live a normal life with his new girlfriend Carly, which is a fairly relatable stress next to a robot war. The full story, including the betrayal and the Chicago battle, sits in the spoiler section that follows.

Transformers Dark of the Moon Plot: Full StorySpoilers

The full story of Transformers: Dark of the Moon turns on one betrayal and one siege, and everything after the first act is revealed here.

In 1962 the Ark, a ship carrying Cybertronian technology, crashes on the Moon, and the United States quietly sends Apollo 11 there in 1969 to examine it. In the present, Optimus Prime realizes that the fuel cell the Decepticons are chasing came from the Ark. The Autobots go to the Moon and find Sentinel Prime, their old leader, together with five Pillars that can create a Space Bridge. Sentinel is revived, and the Autobots expect an ally.

They get a traitor. Sentinel secretly sides with Megatron, hoping to save the dying Cybertron. The Decepticons use the Pillars to start pulling Cybertron toward Earth, and they invade Chicago to make it happen. That sets up the long third act, where Sam, Lennox and the NEST soldiers fight alongside the Autobots in the ruined city.

The plan depends on one piece of hardware. Bumblebee destroys the Control Pillar that holds the plan together, and with it gone the pull on Cybertron breaks. Optimus Prime then kills both Megatron and Sentinel Prime. The Decepticon threat is broken, and the Autobots remain on Earth.

When Was the Transformers Dark of the Moon Release Date?

Transformers: Dark of the Moon opened in the US on June 29, 2011, after a world premiere in Moscow on June 23, 2011. The UK release followed on July 1, 2011, and Australia opened on June 29, 2011.

The world premiere opened the Moscow International Film Festival, according to The Moscow Times. Linkin Park then played an outdoor concert at Vasilyevsky Spusk on Red Square after the screening, according to TheWrap. A robot movie premiere followed by a rock show on Red Square is about as loud as release stunts get.

The US rollout began a day early. The film opened in 3D and IMAX theaters with early screenings on June 28, 2011, before the wide opening on June 29. For where the film sits against the others, see the transformers movies in order guide, where it is fourth in release order and sixth in chronological order.

Transformers Dark of the Moon Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Transformers: Dark of the Moon works in three steps: Bumblebee breaks the plan, Optimus Prime kills the two enemies, and the Autobots stay on Earth.

Step one is the Control Pillar. Bumblebee takes it out, which stops Cybertron's approach and breaks the Decepticon invasion. That is the mechanical hinge of the whole third act: the Space Bridge needs the Pillars, so remove the one that holds the plan together and the plan stops. Step two is the kill. Optimus Prime kills Megatron and the traitor Sentinel Prime. Step three is the aftermath. The surviving Autobots stay on Earth as allies of humanity, which leaves them as protectors of the planet after the battle of Chicago.

What does it mean? Sentinel Prime wanted to save Cybertron at any cost, and the film makes that a tragic motive instead of a cartoon one. The cost is the human city, and Optimus has to be the one to stop it. It could be argued that this is the cleanest conflict the saga has staged, because the villain is a former Autobot leader rather than a stranger.

In my opinion, the best part of the ending is how it uses the series' two oldest threads. Megatron has chased the Autobots since transformers 2007, and Optimus finally ends him here. The sequel then resets the board entirely: transformers age of extinction opens five years after the battle of Chicago with humans seeing the Transformers as a threat. So the Autobots win the war and lose the public in the same stretch of the saga.

Where Was Transformers Dark of the Moon Filmed?

Transformers: Dark of the Moon was filmed across the United States and abroad, with Chicago used for the battle scenes and northwest Indiana standing in for Ukraine.

The list of locations runs wide. Northwest Indiana, around Gary, doubled for Ukraine. Los Angeles, including Sherman Oaks and other areas, hosted shoots. Chicago was used for the battle scenes, which is where the third act takes place. The production also filmed at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and the Johnson Space Center in Houston, which suits a story that opens with Apollo 11. Washington, D.C., Milwaukee and Detroit were also used.

Outside the US, the film shot at Angkor Wat in Cambodia and in Moscow, the same city that hosted the world premiere. The real map is as scattered as the story map, which jumps from the Moon to a Ukrainian setting shot in Indiana to a ruined Chicago.

Transformers Dark of the Moon Trivia and Box Office
