Who Is Starscream in the Transformers Movies?

Starscream is a Decepticon, one of the villainous robots who fight the Autobots, and three films confirm him: Transformers (2007), directed by Michael Bay, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), also directed by Bay, and the animated Transformers One (2024), directed by Josh Cooley. Charlie Adler voices him in the 2007 film, where he is billed eighth, and Steve Buscemi voices him in Transformers One, billed sixth.

In every film he is a supporting Decepticon, with Megatron carrying the main villain role and Optimus Prime leading the other side. The animated prequel is the film that shows where he starts, and it places him before the Decepticons exist as a group.

How Does Starscream's Story Unfold Across the Films?Spoilers

Starscream's story in the films runs from a rebel on Cybertron in Transformers One to a Decepticon on the run in Revenge of the Fallen. In story order, the animated prequel comes first, then the 2007 film, then the 2009 sequel (our transformers timeline lays out the full sequence).

In Transformers One, Starscream leads the High Guard, the Primes' old army, which is rebelling against Sentinel Prime. Orion Pax, D-16, B-127 and Elita-1 are taken to the High Guard after Sentinel's lieutenant Airachnid ambushes them and Alpha Trion is executed. D-16 beats Starscream, takes charge of the group, and Orion grows uneasy about how aggressive his friend has become. Sentinel's forces then strike, the chip holding proof of his crimes is destroyed, and D-16, B-127 and Starscream are captured. Orion rallies the remaining High Guard and the miners to free them. After D-16 kills Sentinel, takes Megatronus's cog and names himself Megatron, Optimus Prime exiles him and his followers, and Megatron turns the exiled High Guard into the Decepticons.

In Transformers (2007), Adler's Starscream sits on the Decepticon side of a story that ends when Sam drives the AllSpark into Megatron's chest at Mission City. In Revenge of the Fallen, Megatron is brought back to life and takes orders from the Fallen, an ancient master who tried to destroy Earth's sun. Optimus Prime, powered up with Jetfire's parts, destroys the Fallen's sun machine and kills the Fallen, and Megatron and Starscream flee.

Who Is Starscream to Megatron?

Starscream ends up in Megatron's camp, and the closest the films come to explaining that bond is the High Guard fight in Transformers One. D-16 beats Starscream, takes charge of the High Guard and later names himself Megatron, so the future Megatron wins that fight. By Revenge of the Fallen the two leave the Giza battlefield together.

Why might Starscream hate Megatron? No spoken answer exists in these films. No scene gives him a stated grudge, so any talk of a long rivalry is a fan reading rather than something the movies say.

His other ties are easier to pin down. His High Guard rebels against Sentinel Prime, the Prime who killed the real Primes to take the Matrix. Optimus Prime exiles Megatron and his followers at the end of Transformers One, and he is the Autobot who kills the Fallen in the 2009 sequel. The Fallen is the master Megatron answers to in Revenge of the Fallen, so Starscream fights under the same banner as a very old, very dangerous boss. For the wider cast of villains, see the Decepticons page.

What Happens to Starscream?Spoilers

Starscream is alive at the last moment the films show him, which is the escape from Giza in Revenge of the Fallen. Optimus Prime kills the Fallen there, and Megatron and Starscream both leave the battlefield, so the Decepticons still have two survivors for the next fight.

Transformers One, the earlier chapter in story order, ends with Optimus exiling Megatron and his followers, and Megatron turns the exiled High Guard into the Decepticons, the group Starscream belongs to.

Will he come back? The next film is in development with no title, cast or release date. TheWrap reported on October 6, 2026 that Michael Bay is in early talks to direct, with Steven Spielberg overseeing the franchise and the story set in modern day. Jason Fuchs was hired in June 2026 to write the script for Paramount and Hasbro. No casting has been announced, so nobody can say yet whether Starscream appears. Best Starscream Moments: My Picks

In my opinion, the best Starscream scene is the High Guard fight in Transformers One, because it does the work of three scenes at once. It shows Starscream as a leader worth beating, it shows D-16 turning more aggressive than his best friend Orion expected, and it leaves Orion uneasy about the friend he is following. For a character who is mostly a name on the credits in the live action films, that is a lot of use from one fight.

My second pick is the end of Revenge of the Fallen. It could be argued that the sequel's weakest habit is a villain who simply vanishes, but here Megatron and Starscream leave the field alive, and that single choice keeps the Decepticons credible after Optimus has killed the Fallen. A villain who walks away is a promise of another round, and the franchise kept that promise.

Third, perhaps the neatest bit of casting in the series is how the voice work splits the character. Charlie Adler gave Starscream his voice in the 2007 film, and Steve Buscemi voices a younger, rebel version in Transformers One. If you are new to the saga, start with transformers movies in order and watch Transformers One first, so the later escape at Giza lands as the end of a story rather than a stray beat.

Facts

FAQs

Is Starscream in Bumblebee?

The Decepticons who hunt B-127 in the Bumblebee movie (2018) are Blitzwing, Shatter and Dropkick, and Starscream is not among its top billed cast. The films where Starscream is confirmed are Transformers (2007), Revenge of the Fallen and Transformers One.

Was Starscream ever an Autobot?

No film here shows him as an Autobot. In Transformers One he leads the High Guard, the Primes' old army that rebels against Sentinel Prime, and Megatron later turns the exiled High Guard into the Decepticons. Optimus Prime's own followers are the ones he names Autobots.

Is Starscream a good guy or bad guy?

He is a bad guy overall, since he is a Decepticon who flees the Giza battle beside Megatron in Revenge of the Fallen. His starting point in Transformers One is murkier, because his High Guard is rebelling against the tyrant Sentinel Prime.

Is Starscream more powerful than Megatron?

No film measures it directly. The one fight between them is in Transformers One, where D-16 beats Starscream before taking the name Megatron. Megatron is the leader of the Decepticons in the later films, with Starscream beside him.

Why does Starscream hate Megatron?

None of the films gives Starscream a stated reason to hate Megatron. What the films show is the fight in Transformers One that D-16 wins, and the two fleeing together in Revenge of the Fallen. Any deeper grudge is a fan interpretation.

What jet was Starscream originally?

None of the films' credits or plot summaries for Starscream name a specific jet model. In Transformers One he first appears as a rebel High Guard leader on Cybertron, before the Decepticons exist as a group, and in Transformers (2007) and Revenge of the Fallen he is credited only as a Decepticon voiced by Charlie Adler, so no film here gives a jet model.
