Thor Marvel Character: Thor Odinson in the MCU
The Thor Marvel character is Thor Odinson, the Asgardian prince and son of Odin, played by Chris Hemsworth in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with Thor (2011). He is credited in nine Marvel Studios films: Thor (2011), The Avengers (2012), Thor: The Dark World, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Doctor Strange (2016), Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and Thor: Love and Thunder. He is not named in the billed cast or plot summaries of the four MCU Spider-Man films.
Who Plays Thor Odinson?
Who Is the Thor Marvel Character?
Thor Odinson is the heir to the throne of Asgard in the MCU, a prince who starts out boastful and impatient and slowly learns to put his people ahead of his pride. Thor (2011), directed by Kenneth Branagh, introduces him as an Asgardian about to be crowned king when Frost Giants try to steal a relic from the vault. He answers by leading his friends and his brother Loki into Jotunheim against his father Odin's wishes, and Odin banishes him to Earth.
Chris Hemsworth plays Thor, and is billed first in Thor (2011), Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder.
What is Thor's personality in Marvel? He begins as proud and hot headed, which is exactly what gets him exiled in 2011. From there he becomes loyal to a fault, since he keeps trying to bring Loki home even after Loki attacks New York in The Avengers (2012). Over later films he turns into a leader who grieves openly and carries his people with him.
What is Thor's superpower? His strength is tied to being worthy. In 2011 Odin strips his powers and sends his hammer Mjolnir after him, enchanted so that only a worthy person can lift it, and Thor gets his powers back when he offers his own life to save the townspeople. Hela later destroys Mjolnir, and the axe Stormbreaker, forged in Avengers: Infinity War, takes its place.

Thor Odinson's Story Arc Across the MCU FilmsSpoilers
Thor's arc runs through nine films: Thor (2011), The Avengers (2012), Thor: The Dark World, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Doctor Strange (2016), Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and Thor: Love and Thunder. It moves from an arrogant prince to a grieving king and, by the end of Love and Thunder, to a parent.
In Thor (2011) he is banished, humbled and made worthy again, then destroys the Bifrost bridge to stop Loki from wiping out the Frost Giants, which closes his own road back to Earth. In The Avengers (2012), directed by Joss Whedon, he arrives hoping to take his brother home, clashes with the others, and then fights beside them against the Chitauri before returning to Asgard with Loki and the Tesseract.
Thor: The Dark World, directed by Alan Taylor, costs him his mother Frigga. Odin refuses to act against Malekith, so Thor frees Loki to find a secret route to Svartalfheim, then turns down the throne because he wants a life with Jane Foster. In Avengers: Age of Ultron he helps Tony Stark overload the machine that is lifting the Sokovian capital into the air, and afterward goes back to Asgard to look into the Infinity Stones. His mid-credits visit to Stephen Strange in Doctor Strange (2016) shows him searching for Odin after Loki's arrival on Earth.
Thor: Ragnarok, directed by Taika Waititi, is the biggest change. Hela destroys Mjolnir and throws the brothers into space, Thor is enslaved as a gladiator on Sakaar, loses an eye, and finally accepts that Ragnarok has to happen. Asgard is destroyed, and he leads the survivors toward Earth as king. In Avengers: Infinity War Thanos wrecks the Asgardian ship, the Guardians of the Galaxy rescue Thor, and he forges Stormbreaker with Rocket and Groot. He lands a heavy blow on Thanos in Wakanda, but Thanos still completes the Infinity Gauntlet and snaps his fingers.
By Avengers: Endgame he has withdrawn to a settlement on Earth, one of the grieving survivors who join the plan to reverse the snap through time travel. Thor: Love and Thunder finds him traveling with the Guardians until Sif warns him that Gorr is hunting gods.
Thor's Family, Allies and Enemies
Thor's key relationships are with his parents, his brother Loki, Jane Foster and the friends who fight beside him.
Odin, played by Anthony Hopkins, is his father. They clash over the Jotunheim raid in 2011, and in Ragnarok Odin explains that his death will release Hela, his imprisoned first child. Frigga, played by Rene Russo, is killed in Malekith's raid on Asgard in The Dark World, and that loss pushes Thor to break Odin's rules.
Who is Thor's girlfriend? Jane Foster, the astrophysicist played by Natalie Portman, who meets him in New Mexico after he is banished. She returns in The Dark World when the Aether takes hold of her, and again in Love and Thunder, where Mjolnir reforges itself for her and she becomes the Mighty Thor. Jane dies in Thor's arms at the end of that film.
Who is Thor's worst enemy? Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, is the most personal one. He opposes Thor in Thor (2011), The Avengers and The Dark World, where he seems to die and then takes Odin's throne. He also poses as Odin in Ragnarok, and the brothers make peace by the end of that film. Hela, Malekith, Gorr and Thanos are the other major villains Thor faces, and Thanos is the one who completes the Infinity Gauntlet and snaps his fingers in Infinity War despite Thor's blow.
His friends include Heimdall (Idris Elba), Sif (Jaimie Alexander), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and Korg, voiced by Taika Waititi. Heimdall sends the Hulk to Earth to warn the others in Infinity War, and he greets Jane at the gates of Valhalla in the Love and Thunder post-credits scene. Among the Avengers, Thor fights beside Tony Stark in Age of Ultron and next to Bruce Banner on Sakaar and in Asgard.
What Happens to Thor Odinson?Spoilers
Thor is alive at the end of Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), where he survives Gorr and ends up raising a daughter.
He also survives the snap in Infinity War, which turns half of all life to dust, and he is among the survivors the film leaves grieving. In Love and Thunder, Gorr uses his wish at Eternity's altar to bring back his daughter Love and dies, asking Thor to look after her. Thor adopts Love, who fights beside him with Stormbreaker while he carries Mjolnir. Jane Foster dies, and New Asgard raises a monument to her.
One thread stays open. In the mid-credits scene Zeus sends his son Hercules to take revenge on Thor, so the grudge from Omnipotence City is unresolved. Disney lists Avengers: Doomsday for release in theaters on December 18, 2026.
Thor's Best Moments, in My Opinion
In my opinion, Thor's best moments are the ones where he gives something up, not the ones where the hammer flies.
The first is the climax of Thor (2011), when he offers his own life to save the townspeople from the Destroyer and, by doing so, becomes worthy again. It is a quiet beat for a Marvel film, and it sets the rule that every later Thor story tests. It also sits nicely beside the sacrifice Steve Rogers makes in the Arctic in Captain America: The First Avenger, since both heroes are defined by what they are willing to lose.
The second is Ragnarok, when Thor decides that the only way to stop Hela is to let Ragnarok happen, and Loki places Surtur's crown in the Eternal Flame to destroy Asgard. Losing an eye and a homeland in the same film could have turned him bitter, and instead he accepts that Asgard is a people rather than a place.
The third is the end of Love and Thunder. Thor shares his power with the Asgardian children at Eternity's altar so they can fight Gorr's monsters, and then he urges Gorr to wish for Love's return instead of the gods' deaths. It is the most generous thing the character does, and, as I see it, it is why the film lands emotionally even where the tone wobbles.
If you want to watch all of this in sequence, follow the Marvel movies in order guide, and keep Doctor Strange (2016) in the list for his mid-credits visit.

FAQs
What is Thor's personality in Marvel?
Thor starts as a proud, hot headed prince whose raid on Jotunheim in Thor (2011) gets him banished from Asgard. He grows into a loyal and selfless leader, willing to offer his life for strangers, to keep trying to bring Loki home, and to accept the fall of Asgard in Thor: Ragnarok.
Who is Thor's girlfriend?
Thor's love interest is Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman. She appears in Thor (2011), Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Love and Thunder, where she wields Mjolnir as the Mighty Thor and dies at the end of the film.
Who is Thor's worst enemy?
Loki is the most personal enemy, opposing Thor in Thor (2011), The Avengers and Thor: The Dark World before the brothers make peace in Thor: Ragnarok. Hela, Malekith, Gorr and Thanos are the other major enemies, and Thanos is the one who defeats him in Avengers: Infinity War.
What is Thor's weakness?
The films show Thor's weaknesses as pride and grief more than any physical flaw. In Thor (2011) his arrogance costs him his powers until he proves himself worthy again, and his hammer matters so much that its destruction by Hela in Thor: Ragnarok leaves him searching for another weapon, which becomes Stormbreaker.
Is Thor a female?
Thor Odinson is male, the son of Odin and brother of Loki, and Chris Hemsworth plays him. Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman, becomes the Mighty Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder after Mjolnir reforms for her, so two characters carry the name in that film.
Is Thor in Spider-Man?
Thor is not listed among the top billed cast, and is not part of the plot summaries, of the four MCU Spider-Man films: Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Those films are covered in the Spider-Man franchise. Thor and Peter Parker do share the casts of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
