What Is Doctor Strange 2016 About?

Doctor Strange 2016 is about a brilliant, arrogant New York neurosurgeon, Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), who loses the fine use of his hands in a car crash and goes looking for a cure that modern medicine cannot give him. Its 2022 sequel, doctor strange in the multiverse of madness, was directed by Sam Raimi.

His search leads to Kathmandu and to Kamar-Taj, where the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) and Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) begin teaching him that magic is real. Meanwhile, a rogue sorcerer named Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen), a former pupil of the Ancient One, raids Kamar-Taj and steals pages from a forbidden ritual book. As such, the film becomes a race between a student who has only just opened his eyes to magic and a rogue sorcerer who has already turned against his teacher.

Doctor Strange (2016) Soundtrack and Score

Michael Giacchino composed the score for Doctor Strange (2016), and the score album, titled "Doctor Strange", was released by Hollywood Records on October 21, 2016. The album runs to 19 tracks, so it collects Giacchino's music for the film in one release, and that orchestral writing carries most of the picture. Two songs are featured alongside the score:

  • "Shining Star" by Earth, Wind & Fire
  • "Interstellar Overdrive" by Pink Floyd

"Shining Star" plays at the start of Stephen Strange's first surgery scene. In my opinion, that placement is a smart contrast, because it sets the confident, almost casual mood of Strange the surgeon before his life changes and the film moves into Giacchino's score.

Neither song was written for the film. "Interstellar Overdrive" by Pink Floyd is the second featured track, and the available details do not say where it plays, so it is best treated as a companion to the score rather than a set piece of its own.

If you are comparing how composers and songs shape each film in the saga, the marvel soundtrack page on Cinvibe collects the score and album releases across the franchise.

Doctor Strange 2016 Plot: Full StorySpoilers

The full plot of Doctor Strange 2016 follows Strange from a ruined surgeon to the protector of the New York Sanctum, and it ends with a time loop instead of a punch.

The film opens in Kathmandu, where Kaecilius and his followers raid Kamar-Taj, kill the librarian and steal pages from a ritual book that belongs to their former teacher, the Ancient One. In New York, Stephen Strange loses the fine use of his hands in a car accident. After modern medicine fails him, he hears of a former paralysis patient who healed himself, and he travels to Nepal to find out how.

The Ancient One shows Strange the astral plane and other dimensions, and he becomes a student beside Mordo, while Wong guards the library. Strange secretly reads forbidden texts and learns to bend time with the Eye of Agamotto. Through these studies he learns that Kaecilius serves Dormammu, ruler of the Dark Dimension, and wants to pull Earth into it.

Kaecilius destroys the London Sanctum, and his zealots then attack the New York Sanctum, where Strange is badly hurt and is treated by his former colleague Dr. Christine Palmer. Strange also discovers that the Ancient One has been borrowing power from the Dark Dimension to prolong her life, which sours Mordo on her. Kaecilius fatally wounds her, and she dies after a last conversation with Strange.

In Hong Kong, the Dark Dimension begins merging with Earth and Wong is killed. Strange turns back time to undo the damage, then confronts Dormammu inside a time loop that kills him again and again. Worn down by the repeats, Dormammu agrees to leave Earth and take Kaecilius and his followers with him if Strange will end the loop. Disillusioned, Mordo gives up magic and walks away, and Strange settles into the New York Sanctum to keep training and protecting the world.

Doctor Strange (2016) Release Date, Premiere and Box Office

Doctor Strange 2016 reached US theaters on November 4, 2016, after a world premiere in Hong Kong on Thursday, October 13, 2016. Wire coverage of the Hong Kong premiere did not name the venue.

The UK release came earlier than the US one, on October 25, 2016, and Australian audiences followed on October 27, 2016 (both dates are reported by Box Office Mojo and TMDB, while the US date is confirmed by The Numbers). The film is rated PG-13 in the US, 12A in the UK and M in Australia, and it runs 115 minutes.

According to Box Office Mojo, Doctor Strange 2016 earned about $678 million worldwide, made up of $233 million domestic and $445 million international, on a reported $165 million budget. That is roughly four times its cost, and you can compare it with every other film on the marvel box office page.

In release order it is the 14th film in the saga, following captain america civil war and preceding guardians of the galaxy vol 2. In chronological order it is 18th, between black panther 2018 and thor ragnarok. The full sequence is on the marvel movies in order page, and the marvel timeline places it among the other films.

Doctor Strange 2016 Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Doctor Strange 2016 is Strange beating Dormammu by trapping him in an endless time loop until the being surrenders and leaves Earth. Kaecilius and his zealots are taken into the Dark Dimension as part of that bargain, Mordo quits the order, and Strange returns the Eye of Agamotto to Kamar-Taj and takes up his post at the New York Sanctum.

In my opinion, the finale works because it pays off the character instead of the spectacle. Strange begins the film as a man whose entire identity is precision and control, and he wins by accepting that he will die over and over without ever landing a blow. A surgeon who cannot stand to lose finally learns to lose repeatedly, and that is a more specific victory than a bigger explosion would have been.

The cost is the part people tend to miss. Mordo had already lost faith in the Ancient One for borrowing power from the Dark Dimension, and Strange's use of time to reverse the damage in Hong Kong looks, from where Mordo stands, like another rule broken for a good reason. It could be argued that this is the moment the film plants its next villain, and the post credit scene confirms it.

The ending also does a lot of franchise work. It hands Strange a permanent home, it links him to Thor and Loki through the mid-credits scene, and it feeds the larger Infinity Stone storyline that avengers infinity war later pays off. If you are following the bigger picture, the infinity stones page shows where this film fits.

Doctor Strange 2016 Post Credit ScenesSpoilers

Two extra scenes follow the main story of Doctor Strange 2016: one partway through the credits and one after they finish.

The first finds Thor inside the New York Sanctum, asking Strange for help. Loki has arrived on Earth, and Strange agrees to join the hunt for Odin. This is the scene that leads into thor ragnarok, where Cumberbatch's Strange turns up again.

The last scene belongs to Mordo. He confronts Jonathan Pangborn, drains away the magical power Pangborn has been using, and declares that the world has too many sorcerers. It marks Mordo's turn against the order, and Chiwetel Ejiofor carries that thread into doctor strange in the multiverse of madness.

Where Was Doctor Strange (2016) Filmed?

Doctor Strange 2016 was filmed mainly at Longcross Studios in Surrey, England, with location work in Kathmandu, London, New York and Hong Kong.

Longcross was the main studio base and housed the New York interiors, the Kamar-Taj temple sets and a 200 metre Hong Kong street set, which the production modeled on businesses and signage scouted in Hong Kong. The Longcross test track was used for the stunt driving and the New York car crash that ends Strange's surgical career.

In Kathmandu, the crew shot on real streets and at real temples, working in a guerrilla style because Nepal's local film industry is small. London and New York supplied plate shoots for the astral plane visuals, and a New York unit also filmed astral plane material. In Hong Kong, streets were photographed and mapped for visual effects, and night aerials were captured as well.
