Thor 2011 Plot: What the Film Is About

Thor 2011 follows a proud Asgardian prince who loses everything on the day he expects to be crowned. Thor is the impulsive heir to the throne of Asgard, and his father Odin is about to make him king. Then Frost Giants from Jotunheim break into the Asgardian vault, and Thor answers by taking a small group of warriors into their realm against Odin's orders. The raid nearly restarts an old war.

Odin punishes his son by stripping him of his powers and sending him to Earth. His hammer Mjolnir is sent after him, enchanted so that only someone worthy can lift it. At its core it is a fish out of water story, with a small New Mexico town set against the realm of Asgard, and it works best if you know as little as possible about what happens next.

Thor (2011) Soundtrack: Patrick Doyle's Score and the Songs

Patrick Doyle composed the score for Thor (2011), directed by Kenneth Branagh, and the score album, "Thor", was released by Buena Vista Records on April 25, 2011. The album runs to 24 tracks, so it covers the full score rather than a short selection of highlights.

Are there songs in Thor? Yes, one featured song is credited, and it is a rock track rather than a piece of Doyle's score:

  • "Walk" by Foo Fighters

"Walk" first plays when Thor, stripped of his powers, drinks at a New Mexico roadhouse with Selvig. It then returns over the closing credits, which means the song bookends Thor's time on Earth: it is heard once while he is far from home and again as the film ends. That is a neat bit of placement for a film that otherwise leans on Doyle's score for its scale.

The pairing is easy to remember. Doyle supplies the music for the story, and a single Foo Fighters song handles the one moment where a character sits down in an ordinary bar. If you want the album, look for the "Thor" score release from Buena Vista Records, and treat "Walk" as the separate track to find on its own.

Full Plot of Thor (2011)Spoilers

The full plot of Thor 2011 is the story of an arrogant prince who earns back his strength by giving up his pride, while his brother takes the throne he left behind.

When Frost Giants try to steal a relic from Asgard's vault, Thor leads his friends and his brother Loki into the Frost Giants' realm and starts a fight. Odin steps in, ends the clash, and banishes Thor to Earth without his powers, sending Mjolnir down after him.

Thor lands in New Mexico, where the astrophysicist Jane Foster, her mentor Erik Selvig and her assistant Darcy Lewis find him. The government agency S.H.I.E.L.D. takes control of the hammer's crash site, and Thor tries and fails to pull the hammer free.

Back in Asgard, Odin falls into a deep sleep and Loki takes the throne. Loki then learns that he is secretly a Frost Giant by birth, adopted by Odin. He sends the Destroyer, a huge metal being, to Earth to kill Thor. Thor offers his own life to save the townspeople, and that selfless act makes him worthy again, so his powers return. He defeats the Destroyer and returns to Asgard to confront his brother.

Loki plans to use the Frost Giants' king, Laufey, to kill Odin, and then to wipe out Jotunheim with the Bifrost bridge. Thor and Loki fight, and Thor destroys the Bifrost to stop it. The destruction cuts the path between Asgard and Earth. Odin wakes, Loki lets himself fall into space, and Thor stays in Asgard while longing to see Jane again.

Premiere and Release Dates for Thor 2011

Thor 2011 held its world premiere on April 17, 2011, at Event Cinemas George Street in Sydney, nearly three weeks before it reached US screens.

The film then rolled out market by market. Australia opened on April 21, 2011, the UK on April 29, 2011, and the US on May 6, 2011, so American audiences saw it last. Box Office Mojo confirms the US date, and the UK and Australian dates are reported.

The sequence matters if you are tracking where the film sits in the saga. It opened about two and a half months before Captain America: The First Avenger arrived on July 22, 2011, and about a year before The Avengers 2012. The full run of releases is laid out on Marvel movies in order.

Thor 2011 Ending Explained: Why the Bifrost FallsSpoilers

The ending of Thor 2011 shows a prince who finally chooses duty over glory, and it costs him the one thing he wants most, which is a way back to Earth.

Why does Thor destroy the Bifrost? Because Loki intends to use it to wipe out Jotunheim, and destroying the bridge is how Thor stops him. Thor opens the film by starting a fight with the Frost Giants out of pride. He closes it by protecting them from his own brother, and in my opinion that reversal is the cleanest piece of character writing in the film. It also answers the question of the villain: Loki is the real threat, with the Destroyer as his tool, while the Frost Giants are cast first as enemies and later as victims.

What happens to Loki? He lets go and falls into space as Odin and Thor mourn him. It could be argued that the film wants you to read this as a death. The Avengers (2012) describes him as the exiled brother of Thor, and Thor: The Dark World finds him in an Asgardian prison, so the fall was not the end.

What does Thor promise Jane? He tells her he will find a way back. The Bifrost is broken, so the promise is not easy, and Jane and Selvig keep studying the science behind the bridge on Earth. Perhaps the best way to read the ending is as a deliberate cliffhanger on Thor's heart rather than on his world, with the larger story handed off to the post credit scene.

Thor 2011 Post Credit Scene: Selvig and the CubeSpoilers

Thor (2011) has one post credit scene, and it sets up The Avengers (2012).

Selvig is taken to a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility, where Nick Fury shows him a mysterious glowing cube and asks for his help. Loki, unseen by the others, pushes Selvig's mind to agree. The scene was directed by Joss Whedon. In The Avengers 2012, Loki seizes the Tesseract and puts Selvig under his control, which is the payoff for this short moment. For more on the character, see Nick Fury.

Filming Locations: Where Puente Antiguo Was Built

Thor (2011) was filmed in California and New Mexico, and the New Mexico shoot supplies the Earth scenes.

Studio stages and early shooting took place around Los Angeles, California. In New Mexico, the production worked in the Galisteo area, where the small town of Puente Antiguo was built for the film. Principal photography ran during 2010. The choice gives the film its sharpest contrast, a small Earth town set against the world of Asgard.

Thor 2011 Trivia

The most useful trivia about Thor (2011) is how it was made and how it performed.

Kenneth Branagh directed it and Kevin Feige produced it, with Paramount as distributor. It was shot in 2D and converted to 3D after filming. It premiered in Sydney on April 17, 2011, almost three weeks before the US release on May 6. Joss Whedon directed the post credit scene. On a $150 million budget, the film earned $449 million worldwide, which is about three times its cost.

Among the five Marvel Studios films released before The Avengers (2012), only Iron Man 2 and Iron Man 2008 earned more worldwide, while Captain America: The First Avenger and The Incredible Hulk earned less. The wider numbers are on Marvel box office.

That is a matter of taste, and Cinvibe writes its verdicts on the reviews page. What can be said plainly is that Thor (2011) earned $449 million worldwide, introduced Thor, Loki and Asgard to the franchise, and was directed by Kenneth Branagh with Chris Hemsworth in the lead.

Why did Natalie Portman quit Thor?

No source reports that Natalie Portman quit the Thor films. She plays Jane Foster in Thor (2011), returns as the second billed actor in Thor: The Dark World (2013), and appears as Jane Foster and The Mighty Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder (2022). Any claim about a reason for leaving is unconfirmed.

Is Thor 2011 necessary to watch?

It is the right starting point for the Thor storyline. Loki, Odin, Heimdall, Erik Selvig and Jane Foster all return in later films, and the post credit scene sets up The Avengers (2012).
