What Is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 About?

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is about a team of misfits guarding valuable batteries for the golden skinned Sovereign and its leader Ayesha, while Peter Quill meets the man who says he is his father. The team's reward for the job is that Nebula is handed back to them, but the arrangement falls apart quickly.

Rocket steals some of the batteries anyway, so the Sovereign send a fleet of drones after the Guardians. A mysterious figure destroys the drones, and the team crash lands on a nearby planet. The figure turns out to be Ego, who tells Quill that he is his father and invites Quill, Gamora and Drax to visit his home planet.

If you are new to the series, the film sits directly after Guardians of the Galaxy in chronological order, so that is the one to watch first. The full sequence for the saga is laid out in our guide to Marvel movies in order.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Soundtrack and Score

Tyler Bates composed the score for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), and the score album, "Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2", came out from Hollywood Records on April 21, 2017 with 19 tracks.

The film also leans on a run of existing songs, which is a big part of its identity as a Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel. Two of them were written for the film, "Guardians Inferno" by The Sneepers and David Hasselhoff, and "Un Deye Gon Hayd (The Unloved Song)" by Jimmy Urine. The second one plays during the Contraxia scene.

The other featured songs are:

  • "Mr. Blue Sky" by Electric Light Orchestra
  • "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)" by Looking Glass
  • "Come a Little Bit Closer" by Jay and the Americans
  • "Father and Son" by Cat Stevens
  • "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac
  • "Surrender" by Cheap Trick
  • "Flash Light" by Parliament
  • "My Sweet Lord" by George Harrison
  • "Bring It On Home to Me" by Sam Cooke
  • "Lake Shore Drive" by Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah

In my opinion, the mix of a classic rock and soul catalog with a purpose built original gives the film a sound that is easy to pick out from the rest of the saga. For the wider picture across every film, see the Marvel soundtrack guide on Cinvibe.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Plot, Fully ExplainedSpoilers

The Guardians guard the Sovereign batteries from a monster, but Rocket steals some of them and the Sovereign attack the team's ship. Ego rescues them and reveals he is Quill's father. Quill, Gamora and Drax travel with Ego to his planet, joined by his empath companion Mantis, while Rocket and Groot stay behind to guard Nebula.

Meanwhile, Ayesha hires Yondu and his Ravagers to catch the Guardians, but Yondu's crew turns on him for going easy on Quill. Taserface leads a mutiny, helped by Nebula, who then goes after Gamora. Kraglin helps free Yondu and Rocket, and Taserface dies when the Ravager ship is destroyed.

On Ego's planet, Ego explains that he is a Celestial who built a human body so he could explore the universe. He has seeded many worlds so that he can spread across them, and he needs a child with his powers to activate the seeds. Quill learns that Ego caused the death of his mother, and he fights back, but Ego drains his energy to start the seeds.

The other Guardians, Yondu and Rocket reach Ego's core, where Yondu admits that he kept Quill in order to protect him. They build a bomb from the stolen batteries, and Groot plants it on Ego's brain. Quill uses his own Celestial powers to hold Ego off while the others flee, and the bomb destroys Ego and the planet. Quill loses his powers, and Yondu gives his life in space to save him.

When Was the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Release Date and Premiere?

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 release date was May 5, 2017 in the US and April 28, 2017 in the UK, with Australia reported at April 25, 2017. The film carries a PG-13 rating in the US, 12A in the UK and M in Australia, and the runtime is 137 minutes.

The world premiere took place on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista and Vin Diesel were among the cast who attended, according to local news coverage of the purple carpet.

Screen Daily's production report confirms both the UK and US dates, so British audiences saw the film a week before American ones.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 settles three things: Ego dies, Yondu is recognized as a Ravager and a father figure, and Nebula chooses her own path. In my opinion, the film earns its emotional weight because it puts the Yondu and Quill relationship at the center, rather than the more obvious bond between Quill and the father who turns out to be the villain.

Ego's plan is the engine. He seeded many worlds so that he could spread across them, and he needed a child with his powers to activate those seeds. That is why Quill's Celestial inheritance becomes both the threat and the weapon. Quill holds Ego off while the others escape, and the bomb built from the stolen batteries finishes the job. It could be argued that the battery theft in the opening is the setup for the whole third act, and I think that is smart plotting.

The funeral is the real ending. The Guardians, now including Mantis, hold a service for Yondu, and many Ravager ships arrive to honor him and accept him back as one of their own. That is a payoff to the crew turning on him earlier. Nebula leaves to keep hunting Thanos even though she has made peace with Gamora, so her arc stays open.

The extra scenes then set up later stories: Ayesha making a new being called Adam, Kraglin taking up Yondu's arrow, and Groot growing into a teenager. Adam is the thread that matters most, because Will Poulter's Adam Warlock is the attacker who opens Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Post Credit ScenesSpoilers

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has several mid credit scenes and one final scene. Kraglin takes up Yondu's arrow and control fin. Stakar meets his old teammates. Ayesha creates a new being called Adam to use against the Guardians. A teenage Groot sulks in his room, and that is the final scene.

The Ayesha scene has the longest reach in the saga, since it leads into the Adam Warlock storyline that arrives in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Where Was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Filmed?

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 was filmed mainly at Pinewood Atlanta Studios in Fayette County, Georgia, which served as the production base. Principal photography began on February 17, 2016 and wrapped on June 16, 2016, according to the film's production record.

The locations used were:

  • Pinewood Atlanta Studios, Fayette County, Georgia, where the large practical sets were built, including the Eclector spaceship
  • Cartersville, Georgia, for additional location filming
  • Georgia International Convention Center, for extra soundstage space
  • St. Charles, Missouri, for additional filming
  • A state park north of Portland, Oregon, for additional filming

The first film was shot in England, so the move to Georgia changed the production setup between the two. Screen Global Production reported that the production designer Scott Chambliss built several full 360 degree sets, which let the actors work inside the environment rather than in front of green screen.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Trivia

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 was the first film shot with the 8K Red Weapon camera, which cinematographer Henry Braham chose over the Alexa 65.

  • The production built several full 360 degree practical sets, including the Eclector, instead of relying on green screen.
  • Vin Diesel's Baby Groot voice was pitched up by 7 to 9 semitones, and James Gunn danced for a full day on a soundstage to give reference for Groot's dancing.
  • Kurt Russell was added to the cast as Ego, and Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki and Chris Sullivan were also new additions.
  • Stan Lee is credited as an executive producer.
