Guardians of the Galaxy (2014): Cast, Characters and Plot
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), directed by James Gunn, is the tenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in release order, with Chris Pratt as Peter Quill (Star-Lord). The 121 minute film follows five outlaws thrown together while a fanatic named Ronan hunts a mysterious orb, and it streams on Disney Plus in the US, UK and Australia.
Guardians of the Galaxy Plot: How the Story Starts
Guardians of the Galaxy opens in 1988, when young Peter Quill is taken from Earth by a gang of alien thieves called the Ravagers, led by Yondu, and it then jumps forward to the years when the grown Quill calls himself Star-Lord. On an abandoned planet he steals a mysterious orb, and that theft draws the attention of Ronan, a fanatic who sends the assassin Gamora to take it from him.
Quill tries to sell the orb on Xandar, a city world, but Gamora catches up with him there, and the bounty hunters Rocket and Groot pile into the fight. The Nova Corps police arrest all four of them and send them to a prison called the Kyln. If you have ever been stuck on a long coach tour with strangers you would never have chosen, you already understand the engine of the film: five people who dislike each other have to work out how to travel together.
Tyler Bates composed the score for Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), and the album "Guardians of the Galaxy: Original Score" was released by Hollywood Records on July 25, 2014, with 29 tracks. Bates supplies the orchestral music, while the film also features eleven songs by other artists.
The best documented placement is "Come and Get Your Love" by Redbone, which plays over the opening sequence, as Star-Lord walks and dances across the planet's surface. That makes it the first song a viewer hears from the film's soundtrack of existing records, and it sets the tone for how music is used throughout the story.
The full list of songs in the film is:
"Hooked on a Feeling" by Blue Swede
"Come and Get Your Love" by Redbone
"I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5
"Moonage Daydream" by David Bowie
"I'm Not in Love" by 10cc
"Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell
"O-o-h Child" by The Five Stairsteps
"Fooled Around and Fell in Love" by Elvin Bishop
"Escape (The Piña Colada Song)" by Rupert Holmes
"Go All the Way" by Raspberries
"Cherry Bomb" by The Runaways

The full story of Guardians of the Galaxy starts with a loss: in 1988, Peter Quill is abducted from Earth by Yondu's Ravagers right after his mother dies. In 2014 he steals the orb on the planet Morag and is attacked by Ronan's men, and Yondu puts a bounty on him. Ronan sends Gamora to take the orb, so Quill carries it to Xandar to sell it, only for Gamora to steal it there while Rocket and Groot join the brawl.
The Nova Corps jail all four in the Kyln, where the grieving warrior Drax tries to kill Gamora. Gamora reveals that she has turned on Ronan and plans to sell the orb to the Collector, which gives the group a reason to escape together in Quill's ship, the Milano. At Knowhere the Collector opens the orb and shows that it holds an Infinity Stone. His servant grabs the stone and causes an explosion, after which Ronan arrives, takes the stone and defeats Drax.
Gamora's sister Nebula destroys her ship, but Yondu rescues Gamora and Quill, and Quill talks the others into a truce. Ronan fits the stone into his warhammer and heads to Xandar to destroy it, with Nebula at his side. The Guardians, the Ravagers and the Nova Corps attack Ronan's flagship, which crashes on Xandar, and Groot sacrifices himself to shield the group from the crash.
In the finale, Quill distracts Ronan while Drax and Rocket destroy the hammer. Quill then grabs the stone and, with his friends sharing its burden, uses it to destroy Ronan.

Guardians of the Galaxy Ending ExplainedSpoilers
The ending of Guardians of the Galaxy settles who the team is and where the Infinity Stone goes, and it leaves two questions for later films. Quill tricks Yondu with a fake stone and hands the real one to the Nova Corps, so the stone leaves the hands of thieves and returns to an official keeper. The Guardians' criminal records are wiped, which is the film's way of turning five outlaws into a crew with a clean slate.
In my opinion, the quietest beat is the strongest one. Quill learns that his father belonged to an ancient unknown species, a line that plants a mystery instead of answering one, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 picks it up when Ego says he is Peter Quill's father. Then Quill opens a last gift from his mother, a cassette of her favorite songs, which ties the story back to the 1988 prologue where he was taken from Earth.
The team leaves in a rebuilt Milano with a cutting from Groot, which grows into a baby Groot. It could be argued that this is the smartest move in the script, because it keeps a character who sacrificed himself in the cast without undoing the sacrifice. Perhaps it is also the most marketable choice, but the film earns it by making Groot the one who shields the group.
The bigger point is the stone. After the street level politics of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, set in Washington, D.C., this film tells viewers that the Infinity Stones matter across the universe. In Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Thanos is hunting the six Infinity Stones, and both Zoe Saldaña's Gamora and Karen Gillan's Nebula are in the cast. Guardians of the Galaxy Post Credit SceneSpoilers
Guardians of the Galaxy has one post credit scene, and it returns to the Collector. He sits in his wrecked archive with only two surviving exhibits, a cosmonaut dog and an anthropomorphic duck.
The scene is a punchline rather than a plot setup, and it follows from the explosion at Knowhere, where the Collector's servant grabs the Infinity Stone. Benicio del Toro plays the Collector, who is the keeper of that archive in the film.
Guardians of the Galaxy Filming Locations
Guardians of the Galaxy was filmed mainly in England, at Longcross Studios in Surrey and at Shepperton Studios, with London standing in for part of Xandar. The Kyln prison set and a Knowhere street were built at Longcross.
The Kyln set was built on a 300 foot stage at Longcross Film Studios, a former British military tank testing site.
In London, the Millennium Bridge was used as a stand-in for Xandar, so a real footbridge over the Thames becomes part of a city world far from Earth. Cinematographer Ben Davis shot the film with Arri Alexa XT cameras and framed it for a 2.40:1 release.

FAQs
Will the Guardians of the Galaxy be in Avengers?
Part of the team has already crossed over. Zoe Saldaña as Gamora and Karen Gillan as Nebula are in the casts of Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper are all in the cast of Thor: Love and Thunder (2022). Disney lists Avengers: Doomsday for December 18, 2026, and the cast and status are covered on the avengers doomsday page.
How do I watch Guardians of the Galaxy in order?
In release order, Guardians of the Galaxy is the tenth film, after Captain America: The Winter Soldier and before Avengers: Age of Ultron. In chronological order it is eleventh, after The Winter Soldier and before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which is twelfth and so comes ahead of Age of Ultron in that order. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (2022) is a Disney Plus special rather than a theatrical film, so it is not counted in the main order. The whole sequence is in marvel movies in order.
What is the lore of the Guardians of the Galaxy?
The lore in this film centers on an orb that holds an Infinity Stone. Peter Quill is taken from Earth in 1988 by the Ravagers under Yondu, the fanatic Ronan wants the orb, the Nova Corps police Xandar, and the Collector keeps an archive on Knowhere. The stone is the thread that links the team to the larger saga, since Thanos is hunting six Infinity Stones in Avengers: Infinity War (2018). See infinity stones for the wider story.
Is Guardians of the Galaxy in the Milky Way?
The story begins on Earth, which is in the Milky Way, in the 1988 prologue where Peter Quill is taken by the Ravagers. The main action then moves to Morag, Xandar, Knowhere and the Kyln prison.
Is Thanos in Guardians?
Thanos is not in the billed cast of Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). Josh Brolin plays Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), where he is billed fourth, and in Avengers: Endgame (2019), where he is billed seventh, and Gamora and Nebula are both in those films. The Infinity Stone in this film's orb is the link to him, and the thanos marvel profile has the rest.
Who did Miley Cyrus play in Guardians of the Galaxy?
Miley Cyrus is not among the 15 billed actors for Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), a list that runs from Chris Pratt as Peter Quill down to Peter Serafinowicz as Denarian Saal. The cast of the sequel is on its own guardians of the galaxy vol 2 page.
