What Is Iron Man 2008 About?

Iron Man (2008), directed by Jon Favreau, follows Tony Stark, a brilliant, playboy head of the weapons company Stark Industries, who becomes a captive and then a hero. While demonstrating a new weapon in Afghanistan, his convoy is attacked and he is badly wounded by shrapnel near his heart.

A terrorist group called the Ten Rings captures him and orders him to build a missile for them. A fellow prisoner, the doctor Yinsen, keeps him alive with an electromagnet, and the two secretly build a small power source and a crude armored suit instead.

That is the whole engine of the first act: a man who sold weapons to the world is forced to make something with his own hands, under pressure, in a cave. If you are new to the saga, this is the film that sets the tone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it needs no homework before you press play.

Iron Man (2008) Soundtrack and Score

Ramin Djawadi composed the score for Iron Man (2008), and the album "Iron Man: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" was released by Lions Gate Records on May 6, 2008, with 19 tracks.

The album is a score release, so the licensed rock and hip hop heard in the film sit outside it. Those songs do a lot of the character work for Tony Stark, who is introduced as a showman before he becomes a hero. The film uses six songs in all:

  • "Back in Black" by AC/DC
  • "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath
  • "Iron Man (2008 big band version)" by John O'Brien and Rick Boston
  • "Slept On Tony With Dirt" by Ghostface Killah
  • "Institutionalized" by Suicidal Tendencies
  • "Damn Kid" by DJ Boborobo

The most memorable placement is "Back in Black", which plays as Stark rides in an army convoy in Afghanistan, joking with the soldiers around him. It sets up a relaxed, cocky version of the character just before the story turns dark.

A big band arrangement of the 1966 cartoon theme, "Iron Man (2008 big band version)", plays while Stark is in a casino, a fitting nod for a man who treats every room as his stage. "Slept On Tony With Dirt" plays at a party on Stark's private jet, which continues the playboy picture.

The original "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath plays over the end credits and closes the film on the hero's name. Where "Institutionalized" and "Damn Kid" play is not stated in the film's music credits, so those two are noted only as part of the track list.

Iron Man 2008 Plot: Full StorySpoilers

The full story of Iron Man (2008) runs from a cave in Afghanistan to a rooftop fight above Stark Industries, and it ends with Tony Stark saying his secret out loud.

Tony and Yinsen build a miniature arc reactor and a prototype armored suit, and Tony uses it to break out of the cave. Yinsen gives his life so Tony can get away. Back in America, Tony announces that his company will stop making weapons, which angers his business partner Obadiah Stane.

Tony then builds a far better suit with help from his assistant Pepper Potts and his friend Rhodey, a military officer. He learns that Stark weapons are being used against civilians in a village and flies there in the armor to rescue the people.

Stane turns out to be secretly selling weapons to the Ten Rings, and he seizes control of the company. He has the arc reactor taken from Tony's chest and builds his own giant armored suit. Pepper and Tony work together to turn the tables on Stane, and Tony fights him above the city. He defeats Stane by overloading the large reactor on the roof of the company building.

Afterward the authorities offer him a cover story. Tony instead stands before the press and says that he is Iron Man.

Iron Man 2008 Release Date and Opening

The Iron Man 2008 release date in the US is May 2, 2008, with the UK matching on May 2 and Australia opening a day earlier on May 1.

The film opened internationally on April 30, 2008, ahead of its domestic debut, and it took $98.6 million across its opening weekend in the US, according to Box Office Mojo. The US date is confirmed through The Numbers, while the UK and Australian dates are reported through TMDB.

The film is rated PG-13 in the US, 12A in the UK and M in Australia.

The release put the film at the very start of the MCU release order. For the full sequence from here to Avengers: Doomsday, see Marvel movies in order.

Iron Man 2008 Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Iron Man (2008) works because Tony Stark rejects the cover story and names himself, which turns a one-off film into the start of a shared universe.

Stane is destroyed when the company's huge reactor overloads under his weight. Tony survives and is given a chance to say that Iron Man was only a bodyguard. At the press conference he ignores the script and publicly states that he is Iron Man.

Why does that matter? In my opinion, it is the single choice that defines the character for the next decade of films. A hero with a secret identity would have kept his friends at a distance, whereas a hero who announces himself invites the government, the press and every other powerful person to come knocking. That is exactly what happens in Iron Man 2, where Tony is under pressure to hand over his technology, six months after the announcement.

It could be argued that the line is also a neat comic book reversal, since the genre has leaned on hidden identities for generations. Perhaps the bolder reading is that Tony cannot stand being told what to say, which is the same trait that drove him to build the suit in a cave. The film ends on his personality rather than on a punch.

My verdict: the final scene is the most important in the film, because the explosion settles the plot while the press conference settles the franchise. The post credit scene, covered next, then confirms the bigger plan. If you want to see where the saga travels from here, our Marvel timeline lays it out.

Does Iron Man 2008 Have a Post Credit Scene?Spoilers

Yes, Iron Man (2008) has one post credit scene, and it introduces the wider Marvel universe.

After the credits, Tony returns home and finds Nick Fury, the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., waiting for him. Fury tells him he is part of a bigger universe and mentions the Avengers Initiative. Samuel L. Jackson plays Fury, uncredited.

The scene points straight at The Avengers (2012), which Joss Whedon directed, and it explains why the film is regarded as the start of the saga. Fury returns in Iron Man 2 and in many later films, so the scene is a promise the series keeps. For his full arc, see Nick Fury.

Where Was Iron Man 2008 Shot?

No shooting location for Iron Man (2008) has been confirmed by the studio or in trade coverage, even though the story moves between an Afghan cave, an American company headquarters and a village under attack.

What is credited is the camera work: Matthew Libatique is the cinematographer.
