What Happens in Iron Man 2? The Setup

Iron Man 2 follows Tony Stark six months after he told the world that he is Iron Man, at a moment when the government wants his technology and his own body is turning against him.

The palladium core that powers the arc reactor in his chest is slowly poisoning him, and he has no replacement for it. Pressure from officials who want him to hand over his armor makes things worse, so Tony hides how sick he is and grows reckless. In the first film the suit was a way out of captivity, and now it is something he has to defend in public.

The threat arrives in the shape of Ivan Vanko, the son of a former Stark associate, who builds his own arc reactor and a pair of electrified whips. He attacks Tony at the Monaco Grand Prix, which exposes Tony's secret weakness and drags in his rivalry with the weapons maker Justin Hammer.

If you are new to the saga, the film is easiest to follow after Iron Man (2008). The ending is covered in the spoiler sections that follow.

What Songs Are in Iron Man 2? Soundtrack and Score

John Debney composed the score for Iron Man 2 (2010), and Columbia released two albums: the soundtrack "Iron Man 2" on April 1, 2010 with 15 tracks, and "Iron Man 2: Original Motion Picture Score" on July 20, 2010 with 25 tracks.

The songs lean on classic rock and hip hop. "Make Way for Tomorrow Today" by Richard M. Sherman was written for the film and plays as the theme of the Stark Expo. Tony Stark starts up the computers in his workshop to "Should I Stay or Should I Go" by The Clash, and the same band's "The Magnificent Seven" plays while Tony and Happy spar. Justin Hammer makes his stage entrance to "Pick Up the Pieces" by Average White Band, and "Groove Holmes" by Beastie Boys plays while Tony sits in the Randy's Donuts sign. "California Love" by 2Pac, Dr. Dre and Roger Troutman plays briefly during Tony's birthday party.

The fight between Tony Stark and Rhodes carries three tracks:

  • "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen
  • "Robot Rock" by Daft Punk
  • "It Takes Two" by Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock

AC/DC is also part of the film's song mix with "Shoot to Thrill" and "Highway to Hell".

Iron Man (2008) was scored by Ramin Djawadi, so the sequel brought in a new composer. For other scores in the saga, see the Marvel soundtrack page.

Iron Man 2 Plot: Full SynopsisSpoilers

Tony Stark makes peace and publicity out of being Iron Man, and he refuses to give his armor to the military. His arc reactor is poisoning him, so he hides his condition and behaves more recklessly. He makes Pepper Potts the head of his company and hires an assistant who goes by Natalie Rushman.

At the Monaco Grand Prix, Ivan Vanko attacks Tony with energy whips and nearly beats him. Vanko is jailed, and then rival contractor Justin Hammer fakes his death and recruits him to build armored drones that will embarrass Stark.

Tony's decline peaks at a party, where he gets drunk while wearing the armor. His friend Rhodey steps in, takes a suit and gives it to the military. Nick Fury then tells Tony that Natalie is really the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Natasha Romanoff. Fury also reveals that Tony's late father left a hidden clue to a new power source.

Tony follows the clue and uses it to make a new element that replaces the palladium and cures his poisoning. At the Stark Expo, Vanko takes control of Rhodey's armored suit and of Hammer's drones, and turns them on Tony. Tony and Rhodey fight the machines together, with help from Natasha, and they defeat Vanko, who dies when his own suit blows up. Tony and Rhodey are later honored with medals for their service.

Iron Man 2 Release Date and Rollout

Iron Man 2 opened in US theaters on May 7, 2010, after reaching theaters in several other countries a week or more earlier.

Australia opened on April 29, 2010 and the UK on April 30, 2010, according to TMDB. The Numbers also lists a South Korean release on April 29, 2010, ahead of the US date. The US date is the one Box Office Mojo gives for the domestic release.

The film carries a PG-13 rating in the US, 12A in the UK and M in Australia. It runs 124 minutes. For the film's place among the others, see Marvel movies in order, where it sits third by release order and fourth by chronological order.

Iron Man 2 Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Iron Man 2 resolves Tony's health, leaves Rhodey in a military suit, and quietly turns Tony from a lone hero into someone who works alongside S.H.I.E.L.D.

Vanko's attack ends when his armor and drones are destroyed, and Hammer is arrested. Tony and Rhodey are given medals, and Tony ends up as a consultant to S.H.I.E.L.D. rather than a full member. Rhodey keeps a military armor as War Machine.

In my opinion, the consultant detail is the most important beat of the ending. Tony spends the film refusing to hand over his technology, and the compromise is that he keeps his freedom while joining a larger structure on his own terms. It could be argued that this is the film's real answer to its opening question about who owns the armor.

The cure matters too. Tony does not fix himself with a new gadget alone. He builds a new element from a clue his father left, which ties the personal story to the Stark family and to Howard Stark (John Slattery) in particular. Perhaps that is why the film feels more like a family inheritance story than a repeat of the first movie.

The medal scene also reads differently against its neighbors. In Iron Man (2008), Tony's big moment is announcing that he is Iron Man, a solo act of ego. Here the public moment is a shared one, with Tony and Rhodey (now played by Don Cheadle rather than Terrence Howard) honored side by side. The Vanko fight at the Stark Expo is also a two person set piece, with Natasha helping, which is a small rehearsal for the team fights of The Avengers (2012).

The Natalie Rushman reveal is the other hinge. Nick Fury tells Tony that his assistant is the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Natasha Romanoff, and Scarlett Johansson then plays her in The Avengers (2012). Compare that with The Incredible Hulk, released between the two Iron Man films, which links to the wider universe more lightly. Iron Man 2 is where the connective tissue becomes the plot.

Finally, the film sets up the wider team-up story that leads toward The Avengers (2012). If you need one reason to watch this film before that crossover, the reveal about Natasha is it.

Iron Man 2 Post Credit SceneSpoilers

Iron Man 2 has one post credit scene, and it sets up the next film in the release order.

After the credits, Agent Coulson arrives at a crater in the New Mexico desert and finds a huge hammer there. This sets up Thor (2011). Coulson is played by Clark Gregg, who is also billed in the main cast.

Iron Man 2 Filming Locations

The story of Iron Man 2 moves between Monaco, the Stark Expo and a New Mexico desert, but those are settings in the plot rather than confirmed shooting sites.

Box Office Mojo and The Numbers name the cinematographer, Matthew Libatique, but neither publishes a production location list for the film, so no filming sites are confirmed.
