What Is The Incredible Hulk (2008) About?

The Incredible Hulk (2008) is about Bruce Banner, a scientist who turns into the Hulk when his heart rate climbs too high, and who is hiding in Rio de Janeiro while he searches for a cure. Banner was exposed to gamma radiation in an experiment run for General Thaddeus Ross, and five years later he works in a bottling plant and trains himself to stay calm.

He also trades messages online with a mystery scientist called Mr. Blue, who may be able to help him find a cure. Then a drop of his blood ends up in a soda bottle, which lets Ross trace him to Brazil. Ross sends a special forces team led by Emil Blonsky to capture him.

The Incredible Hulk Soundtrack and Score

Craig Armstrong composed the score for The Incredible Hulk (2008), and the album "The Incredible Hulk: Original Motion Picture Score" was released by Marvel Music on June 10, 2008.

That release is a pure score album. It collects the orchestral cues written for the film rather than a playlist of licensed pop tracks, and it runs to 45 tracks, which is a generous count for a single film. In practical terms, if you are looking for the music that plays behind Bruce Banner's life on the run, from his hideout in Rio de Janeiro to the confrontations with General Ross's pursuers, this album is the place to find it.

No featured songs are documented for the film. There are no licensed tracks to list and no songs written for the picture, so the music identity rests entirely on Armstrong's score and its single album. That makes the soundtrack easy to follow: one composer, one label, one release date and one album to look for.

If you want to compare how each film in the saga approached its music, including the composers and albums behind the other entries, see the marvel soundtrack page.

The Incredible Hulk Plot in FullSpoilers

The full plot of The Incredible Hulk runs from a failed capture in Rio to a monster fight in Harlem. Banner was infected during a military experiment overseen by General Ross, which also hurt Ross's daughter Betty and others, and he has been a fugitive ever since.

In Brazil, Blonsky's team closes in, Banner turns into the Hulk and beats them, and Blonsky survives. He is later given a serum that makes him faster and stronger. Banner then travels back to Culver University to see Betty, who is now seeing Dr. Leonard Samson. Ross's forces attack, the Hulk fights them, and Betty escapes with Banner.

Mr. Blue turns out to be the biologist Samuel Sterns, who has a possible antidote and has made a large amount of Banner's blood. Banner and Betty are captured, and Blonsky has Sterns inject him with Banner's blood. That is how Blonsky becomes the Abomination, a monster stronger than the Hulk, and he tears through Harlem.

Banner talks Ross into letting him go and leaps from a helicopter, turning into the Hulk during the fall. The Hulk nearly kills the Abomination but stops when Betty asks him to. The army arrests the Abomination and the Hulk escapes.

When Did The Incredible Hulk Come Out? Release Dates and Box Office

Australian audiences saw The Incredible Hulk first, on June 12, 2008, with the UK and US openings following together on June 13, 2008 (Box Office Mojo lists all three dates). The film carries a PG-13 in the US, a 12A in the UK and an M in Australia, and its running time is 114 minutes. No premiere date or venue is recorded for it.

The money side is modest for a Marvel Studios era opener. Box Office Mojo reports $134.8 million at the domestic box office and $130.0 million abroad, which adds up to $264.8 million worldwide against a $150 million budget. The Numbers disagrees slightly, putting the budget at $137.5 million and the worldwide total at $265.6 million, so the trackers do not match exactly. For perspective, the film took less than half of what iron man 2008 made worldwide and trailed iron man 2 by a wide margin too.

If you want to watch it now, Disney Plus carries it in the US, UK and Australia as of November 3, 2026 (JustWatch data via TMDB). US viewers can also rent or buy it through Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, Google Play Movies, YouTube and Fandango At Home. Our where to watch marvel page covers every film, and the marvel box office table puts this gross next to the rest of the saga.

The Incredible Hulk Ending Explained: Abomination and the Stark SceneSpoilers

The ending of The Incredible Hulk shows Banner choosing to manage the Hulk instead of running from him, while a final scene with Tony Stark ties the film to the wider universe. After the Harlem fight, the Abomination is taken into military custody and the Hulk gets away.

A month later Banner is hiding in Bella Coola, British Columbia, learning to bring on and control the change. In my opinion, that is the quiet heart of the film, because the early scenes in Rio are all about suppressing the Hulk and the last ones are about using him. In Rio, Banner trains himself to keep his heart rate down in a bottling plant (shot in a Hamilton, Ontario factory), and the film opens with him as a man who fears his own pulse. By the glacier shoot he is the one deciding when the change happens. It is a modest arc, but it is a real one.

The Harlem fight deserves a closer look too. Rhythm & Hues built the Hulk at about nine feet tall, and Yonge Street in Toronto doubled for the battleground, so the Abomination, a bigger and nastier monster, has real physical mass to throw around. The turn comes when Banner leaps from the helicopter and changes mid-fall, and the Hulk then stops short of killing Blonsky only because Betty asks him to. I read that as the film's thesis: the rage is not the whole creature. Compare that with the Culver University sequence earlier, shot at the University of Toronto and Morningside Park, where the Hulk is purely a force that the army provokes.

Then Tony Stark finds General Ross in a bar and tells him a team is being put together. That scene links the film to the larger Marvel universe, and it lands in a film that, by chronology, sits fifth, after iron man 2 and before thor 2011. It could be argued that the scene is the most important thing the film does for the saga. Paradoxically, the film that sells Banner as a loner leads straight to the avengers 2012, where Mark Ruffalo plays him in a team, and where the Hulk is a teammate instead of a fugitive.

The production context adds a wrinkle. Edward Norton rewrote the script, yet the Writers Guild gave sole screenplay credit to Zak Penn, so the version we see is a negotiated one, and the Banner-as-fugitive tone owes something to that tussle. The Ross storyline also has a long tail. William Hurt appears as Secretary Ross in black widow 2021, and Harrison Ford plays President Thaddeus Ross in captain america brave new world, where Liv Tyler returns as Betty and Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns. The general from this film grows into a political figure, and the Sterns we meet as Mr. Blue is a thread the saga picked up again years later.

Where Was The Incredible Hulk Filmed?

The Incredible Hulk was filmed mainly in Canada, with a location shoot in Rio de Janeiro and about a week in New York City. Principal photography began on July 9, 2007 and wrapped in November 2007 after 88 days.

In Toronto, the University of Toronto and Morningside Park stood in for the Culver University battle, the Financial District was used, and Yonge Street hosted the climactic fight. In Hamilton, Ontario, a factory became the Brazilian bottling plant. A glacier at Bella Coola, British Columbia, was also used.

Rio supplied the Brazilian exteriors. Producer Gale Anne Hurd said the Rio shoot came after 14 weeks in Canada and included about 10 days in the Tavares Bastos favela and 3 days at the Bhering factory. The shoot also covered Lapa and the Tijuca Forest exteriors. Hurd said all Brazil exteriors were shot on location, with some interiors built on stages and in factories in Toronto and Hamilton.
