James Bond Box Office Worldwide: Every Film by Gross

The 25 EON Productions films have grossed about $7.7 billion worldwide, and the highest grossing James Bond movie is Skyfall (2012), directed by Sam Mendes, at $1.11 billion on a $200 million budget.

Spectre (2015) sits second at $879 million, followed by No Time to Die (2021) at $759 million, Casino Royale (2006) at $606 million and Quantum of Solace (2008) at $590 million. All five star Daniel Craig, and they are the five highest grossing films in the series. Every figure is nominal, meaning it is not adjusted for inflation, so a 1964 gross and a 2012 gross are not directly comparable.

Box Office Mojo and The Numbers list a worldwide total for 23 of the 25 films. For From Russia with Love and The Spy Who Loved Me no combined figure is published, so the series total adds their domestic and international grosses, which gives $78.9 million and $185.4 million. Here is every film ranked by worldwide gross, in millions of US dollars (Skyfall in billions).

Two unofficial films sit outside the 25. Never Say Never Again (1983), directed by Irvin Kershner, took $160 million worldwide on a $36 million budget, which makes it the highest grossing non EON Bond film. Casino Royale (1967), a spoof with five credited directors, took $41.7 million on a $12 million budget. The 2006 EON version of Casino Royale, directed by Martin Campbell, made $606 million, while the 1967 spoof made about one fifteenth of that. Adding both unofficial films lifts the combined figure to about $7.9 billion, but the official series total stays at $7.7 billion.

The lowest grossing EON film is Dr. No at $59.6 million worldwide, and the lowest budget in the series belongs to the same film at $1 million. For the full film list see james bond movies, and for the release sequence see james bond movies in order.

Highest Grossing James Bond Movie: Why Skyfall Peaked and What Drove the Series

Skyfall (2012) is the highest grossing James Bond movie at $1.11 billion, and Daniel Craig's five films produced about 51 percent of the EON total.

The clearest way to read Bond box office is by lead actor, because each era's average gross shows how fast the series grew, and in my opinion the story is steady climbing with one enormous peak at Skyfall. These are the totals by actor, built from the worldwide grosses above.

Lead actorFilmsCombined worldwideAverage per film
Sean Connery6$632.1M$105.4M
George Lazenby1$82.0M$82.0M
Roger Moore7$1.19B$170.1M
Timothy Dalton2$347.4M$173.7M
Pierce Brosnan4$1.48B$369.8M
Daniel Craig5$3.94B$788.8M

Craig's five films account for about $3.94 billion, from 20 percent of the films. Pierce Brosnan's four films, from GoldenEye (1995) to Die Another Day (2002), averaged $370 million, more than double the Roger Moore average. Timothy Dalton's two films averaged $174 million, a shade above Moore, so the numbers alone do not explain why his run ended after Licence to Kill (1989). That being said, Licence to Kill made $156 million worldwide on a $42 million budget, below The Living Daylights at $191 million.

What Are the Top 5 James Bond Movies by Box Office?

The top five James Bond movies by worldwide gross are Skyfall (2012), Spectre (2015), No Time to Die (2021), Casino Royale (2006) and Quantum of Solace (2008), in that order. Die Another Day is sixth at $432 million, the best result of the Brosnan era, ahead of The World Is Not Enough at $362 million, GoldenEye at $352 million and Tomorrow Never Dies at $333 million. MGM was the domestic distributor on both Tomorrow Never Dies and Die Another Day. Among the older films, Moonraker at $210 million was the biggest earner before GoldenEye.

Quantum of Solace earned $590 million against $606 million for Casino Royale, despite a $200 million budget against $150 million, which is the one step backward inside the Craig run. For the quality side of the argument, see james bond movies ranked.

Why Did Skyfall Gross So Much?

Skyfall (2012) grossed $1.11 billion because it opened in the series' 50th anniversary year and drew a worldwide audience, with $806 million (about 73 percent) from international theaters and $304 million from domestic ones. The UK premiere was in London on 23 October 2012 (confirmed), the UK release followed on 26 October 2012 (confirmed), and the US release is reported as 9 November 2012, two weeks after the UK release. Adele's theme then won the Oscar for Best Original Song on 24 February 2013, the first Bond theme to do so. See Skyfall (2012) for the full film page.

The international share kept rising afterward, to roughly 77 percent for Spectre (2015) and 79 percent for No Time to Die (2021), while the domestic gross slid from $304 million to $200 million to $161 million. No Time to Die had its UK premiere at the Royal Albert Hall in London on 28 September 2021 (reported), with a UK release on 30 September 2021 and a US release on 8 October 2021, both confirmed. Spectre staged a record setting practical explosion in Erfoud and shot its Day of the Dead opening in Mexico City, and that scale showed in a $245 million budget. It returned about 3.6 times its cost, against about 5.6 for Skyfall.

Which Bond Films Returned the Most Against Their Budgets?

Dr. No (1962) returned the most against its budget, turning $1 million into $59.6 million, almost 60 times its cost, ahead of Goldfinger (1964) at about 42 times. Goldfinger (1964) turned $3 million into $124.9 million, while Live and Let Die returned about 23 times its $7 million budget and Thunderball (1965) returned nearly 16 times on $9 million. Budget multiples are not profit, because marketing costs and exhibitor shares are left out, but they show why producers kept spending. You can read Dr. No (1962) on its own page.

The modern surprise is GoldenEye, which returned nearly 6 times its $60 million budget and slightly beat Skyfall's multiple. In my opinion, that is the most efficient reboot of the franchise, because it reintroduced the series after a six year gap in releases with a modest budget. No Time to Die carries the largest budget at $250 million and returned about 3 times that.

How Much Did Sean Connery Make for James Bond Movies?

No studio or trade source gives a verified total for what Sean Connery earned from his Bond films, so any pay figure quoted online should be treated with caution. What can be stated is what the films earned: his six EON films grossed about $632 million worldwide, with Dr. No, From Russia with Love (1963), Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice (1967) and Diamonds Are Forever (1971) in the total. Add the unofficial Never Say Never Again (1983) at $160 million and his Bond films reach about $792 million. Thunderball's $141 million was the biggest of his six.

Is There James Bond Box Office Adjusted for Inflation?

No. Studios and the trade sources that publish Bond grosses do not publish an official inflation adjusted ranking, so every figure here is nominal. Ticket prices rose across six decades, which means Goldfinger's $124.9 million in 1964 and Skyfall's $1.11 billion in 2012 cannot be compared dollar for dollar. It could be argued that the Connery films would climb a properly adjusted table, but without a published adjusted series that stays a guess, and no adjusted numbers are claimed.

Where Does the Next Bond Film Fit?

The next Bond film is untitled, in development at Amazon MGM Studios, with Denis Villeneuve directing and Steven Knight writing, and no release date or budget has been announced. Reports of a 2027 shoot and a 2028 release are rumors with no studio date behind them, so no box office target can be set. For status and casting, follow the next james bond movie.
