Lucy Gray Baird: Who She Is, Who Plays Her and What Happened

Lucy Gray Baird is the District 12 tribute whom Coriolanus Snow mentors in the 10th Hunger Games, and Rachel Zegler plays her, billed second after Tom Blyth as Snow. The credited name is Lucy Gray Baird. She belongs to the earliest period of the saga: the story takes place about ten years after the First Rebellion and more than sixty years before the original Hunger Games, so she sits at the start of the hunger games timeline.

She appears in one film only, ballad of songbirds and snakes, the 2023 prequel spin-off directed by Francis Lawrence, which runs 157 minutes. The four main films from the hunger games 2012 to mockingjay part 2 never feature her. If you are planning a viewing, the hunger games movies in order page shows where the prequel fits, and the full hunger games characters list covers the rest of the cast.

Is Lucy Gray Baird related to Katniss Everdeen? The films do not say so. Both are District 12 tributes who face the arena, but nothing in the plot establishes a family link to katniss everdeen hunger games.

Lucy Gray Baird and Coriolanus Snow begin as a mentor and tribute, grow close, and are later divided by Snow's betrayal of a friend. Tom Blyth plays the young Snow, who becomes the tyrant of the original films, and you can read about his later life on the coriolanus snow page. In the prequel he works to keep her alive in the arena, and she plans to run away with him once they meet again in District 12.

Did Snow genuinely love Lucy Gray? The film shows both sides. He follows her into the arena to keep her alive, and he is later exiled to the Districts as a Peacekeeper after his cheating comes to light. Yet, he also chases her into the forest to keep her quiet after she learns that he betrayed Sejanus Plinth. Whether that counts as love is a matter of interpretation, and the film never settles it.

Why did Lucy Gray leave Coriolanus? She turns against him after he confesses that he betrayed Sejanus, Snow's friend, who sympathizes with the rebels. Her bond with Snow is the central relationship in her story.

The prequel stands apart from the next film, sunrise on the reaping, which opens on November 20, 2026.

In my opinion, the strongest stretch of Lucy Gray's story is the bond with Snow before the arena, because it makes everything after it cost something. The film asks you to believe that a Capitol student and a District 12 tribute could find common ground over their struggles, and Rachel Zegler and Tom Blyth carry that. It also sets up a contrast with the original series, where Katniss and Peeta use the cameras to survive. Here the cameras are the machinery that Snow helps to sharpen.

The second moment is the confession in District 12. Snow admits his betrayal of Sejanus, and her turn against him changes the film from romance to tragedy. It could be argued that this is where Lucy Gray makes her most important choice, since she walks away from the man who had tried to keep her alive.

The forest chase is the third. Perhaps the most debated question is what most likely happened to her afterward. My own reading is that she escaped, because the film shows Snow unsure whether his shot landed. That is an interpretation, and the film supports it no more than the opposite view.
