Hunger Games Characters: Who They Are and Who Plays Them

The main Hunger Games characters fall into three groups: the District 12 team around Katniss, the Capitol figures who run the Games, and the rebels and victors who join her in the later films. Each entry below gives the actor and the film where the character matters most, and it contains plot spoilers for all five released films, including deaths.

The core group is the same across the four main films, and a name links to its own page where one exists.

• Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence): the District 12 tribute who volunteers to save her sister, then becomes the face of the uprising. See katniss everdeen hunger games.
• Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson): the baker's son chosen as the male tribute, who announces in an interview that he has loved Katniss for years. See peeta mellark hunger games.
• Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth): Katniss's friend from home, who is whipped in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and joins the rescue team in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1. See gale hawthorne hunger games.
• Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson): the drunken past winner who mentors both tributes. See haymitch hunger games.
• Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks): appears in all four main films. See effie trinket hunger games.
• Cinna (Lenny Kravitz): the stylist behind Katniss's costumes, including the wedding gown that turns into a Mockingjay. See cinna hunger games.
• President Coriolanus Snow (Donald Sutherland): the Capitol's ruler, who treats Katniss's defiance as a threat to his control. See coriolanus snow.
• Primrose Everdeen (Willow Shields): Katniss's younger sister, whose name is drawn at the reaping. See primrose everdeen hunger games.
• Finnick Odair (Sam Claflin): a past victor who joins Katniss in the Quarter Quell arena. See finnick odair hunger games.

The female characters range from tributes to the people who run the rebellion.

• Katniss Everdeen, Primrose Everdeen and Effie Trinket, described above.
• Rue (Amandla Stenberg): the young tribute who allies with Katniss. Rue is killed, and Katniss mourns her with flowers.
• Clove (Isabelle Fuhrman): a tribute in the first film.
• Johanna Mason (Jena Malone): a past victor in the Quarter Quell who knocks Katniss out and runs off with her tracker.
• Mags Flanagan (Lynn Cohen): Katniss and Peeta's ally in the Quarter Quell arena, who gives up her life so Finnick can save Peeta.
• President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore): the leader of District 13, who asks Katniss to become the Mockingjay.
• Cressida (Natalie Dormer): appears in Mockingjay Part 1 and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2.
• Greasy Sae (Sandra Ellis Lafferty): appears in the first film.

The male characters include the mentors, the Careers and the strategists behind the revolt.

• Peeta Mellark, Gale Hawthorne, Haymitch Abernathy, Cinna, Finnick Odair and President Snow, described above.
• Cato (Alexander Ludwig): the last of the Careers, killed after a final struggle with Katniss and Peeta.
• Caesar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci): appears in all four main films.
• Seneca Crane (Wes Bentley) and Claudius Templesmith (Toby Jones): Crane appears in the first film, and Templesmith in the first two.

• Boggs (Mahershala Ali): the leader of Katniss's unit in Mockingjay Part 2, who passes her the holographic map before he dies.

The prequel, ballad of songbirds and snakes, directed by Francis Lawrence (2023), is set about ten years after the First Rebellion and more than sixty years before the original Games. Its cast is almost entirely new.

• Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth): a poor Capitol student who mentors a tribute and later becomes the ruthless president seen in the original films.
• Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler): the District 12 tribute assigned to him, whose fate the film leaves unclear. See lucy gray baird.
• Sejanus Plinth (Josh Rivera): Snow's friend, who sympathizes with the rebels and is betrayed by him.
• Dean Casca Highbottom (Peter Dinklage), Dr. Volumnia Gaul (Viola Davis), Lucky Flickerman (Jason Schwartzman) and Tigris (Hunter Schafer) complete the main prequel cast.

Sunrise on the reaping is the next film, set for November 20, 2026 in the US and UK, with Francis Lawrence listed as director on TMDB. Its trailer arrived in April 2026, and the sunrise on the reaping trailer page tracks the footage. No studio has confirmed its character list yet, so the next movie page carries the cast as it is announced.

Who are the main characters in Hunger Games book 3? The third book, Mockingjay, was adapted as two films. Katniss, Peeta and Gale lead them, with Coin, Plutarch Heavensbee, Finnick, Boggs and Cressida driving the war plot. Part 1 is covered under mockingjay part 1 and Part 2 under mockingjay part 2.

What is the saddest death in The Hunger Games? That is a matter of taste, but two deaths carry the most weight in the plot. Rue dies in the hunger games 2012, and Katniss answers with flowers, which sparks unrest in Rue's home district. Prim dies in the bombing near the end of Mockingjay Part 2, after the rebels have already won ground.

Why did Clove hate Katniss? The first film's plot gives no stated reason for a personal grudge. What it shows is a contest inside the arena, where Katniss and Rue plan to destroy the supplies of the Careers, the stronger group.

How old is Prim when she dies? Prim is Katniss's younger sister, and Katniss is sixteen when the first film begins, so Prim is younger than that at the first reaping. She dies in Mockingjay Part 2, and the films do not state her exact age at that point.
