Who Plays Mathayus / The Scorpion King?

Who Is The Scorpion King Mathayus?

Mathayus is an Akkadian assassin who becomes the Scorpion King, a legend that drives the plot of The Mummy Returns (2001) and whose rise is told in The Scorpion King (2002). Dwayne Johnson plays him in both, and the credits list the part as "Mathayus / The Scorpion King", one part covering the man and the title.

The Scorpion King (2002), directed by Chuck Russell, puts him at the center for 92 minutes. He works as a hired killer alongside his brother Jesup and their friend Rama, and King Pheron hires the three to kill Cassandra, the seer who lets the conqueror Memnon foresee every attack. When Pheron's son Takmet betrays the plan, the Akkadians are ambushed and Mathayus is left in the desert, which sets up the rest of the film.

The Mummy Returns (2001), directed by Stephen Sommers, uses the name differently. There the Scorpion King is tied to a golden bracelet, an oasis called Ahm Shere and an army that a cult wants to control. Johnson is billed eighth in that film, while he leads the cast of his own.

If you searched for "Scorpion King mummy", he is not the mummy of the series. That role belongs to Imhotep, played by Arnold Vosloo in the first two main films. For the wider cast, see the Mummy cast.

The Scorpion King Series: Mathayus Across Two FilmsSpoilers

Mathayus has a full arc in The Scorpion King (2002) and a monstrous one in The Mummy Returns (2001), and the two films were released in the opposite order to the story they tell. In chronological order the spinoff comes first, which you can see in the Mummy timeline and in the Mummy movies in order.

In The Scorpion King, Mathayus survives the desert with the help of the thief Arpid and swears to finish the mission. He slips into Memnon's city of Gomorrah, finds Cassandra and chooses to take her with him instead of killing her. He fights off Memnon's men, including the captain Thorak, is poisoned, and is healed by Cassandra. The group is captured by the rebel leader Balthazar, Mathayus defeats him, and Balthazar offers shelter. Cassandra returns to Memnon to try to kill him while Mathayus, Balthazar, Arpid, Philos and the rebels attack the stronghold. Mathayus finishes Memnon with an arrow, the soldiers yield, and he is named the Scorpion King.

In The Mummy Returns, the title has become a threat. A cult led by Baltus Hafez revives Imhotep so that he can wake the Scorpion King and take command of his army. Alex O'Connell's bracelet sets a seven day clock running toward Ahm Shere. At the pyramid, Imhotep finds his powers drained, and the Scorpion King is turned into a huge scorpion creature that kills Hafez. Rick finds the spear that can kill him and sends the army back to the underworld.

Allies and Enemies of Mathayus

Mathayus defines himself through the people around him: a seer he spares, a rebel he beats and befriends, and a conqueror he cannot let live. Most of them are played by actors billed just below Johnson in the 2002 cast list.

Cassandra, played by Kelly Hu, is the woman he was sent to kill. She heals him after he is poisoned, the two grow close, and she is the one who warns at the end that the peace will not last. Balthazar, played by Michael Clarke Duncan, starts as a captor after he catches Mathayus and Cassandra, then becomes a friend after Mathayus defeats him. Arpid, played by Grant Heslov, is the thief who helps Mathayus escape the desert. Philos, played by Bernard Hill, is the explosives maker the group goes looking for.

On the other side stand Memnon, played by Steven Brand, and his captain Thorak, played by Ralf Moeller. Takmet, played by Peter Facinelli, is the traitor whose betrayal costs Mathayus his brother Jesup and his friend Rama.

In The Mummy Returns (2001), his relationships are inverted. He is no longer someone anyone befriends. Imhotep is the villain who tries to wake him, Hafez is the cultist who pays for it, and Rick O'Connell is the man who ends him with the spear. Alex O'Connell is the boy whose golden bracelet, linked to the Scorpion King, sets the story in motion.

What Happens to the Scorpion King?Spoilers

The Scorpion King of The Mummy Returns (2001) dies on Rick O'Connell's spear, while the Mathayus of the 2002 spinoff lives and takes a throne. The two endings belong to different versions of the same name.

In The Scorpion King (2002), the final arrow ends Memnon and his soldiers yield. Mathayus is hailed as king, and he parts from Balthazar as a friend. Cassandra tells him the peace will not hold, and his reply is that he will shape his own destiny. The film leaves him alive and in charge, with that open question hanging over the crown.

The Mummy Returns (2001) takes the legend somewhere much darker. After the creature kills Hafez at the pyramid, Rick uses the one weapon able to destroy it, and the army it commanded is dragged back to the underworld. The oasis of Ahm Shere then collapses, and Imhotep lets go of the living world and falls away, so both plots close in the same collapse.

Best Moments of the Scorpion King (Opinion)

In my opinion, the best Mathayus scenes are the ones where he chooses something other than the job. The strongest is in Gomorrah, when he finds Cassandra and takes her with him instead of killing her. It turns a standard hired killer plot into a story about a man who changes sides, and it gives Johnson a quieter beat than the fights around it.

The desert escape with Arpid is a close second, because it shows Mathayus as a survivor before he is a king. The arrow that finishes Memnon is the cleanest payoff, since the film has spent its whole length telling you that Memnon sees every attack coming, and it takes a plain shot to end that.

For sheer creature design, it could be argued that the best Scorpion King moment belongs to The Mummy Returns (2001). The reveal of a huge scorpion creature at the pyramid, killing Hafez, is the moment the film turns a legend into a monster with rules: it is dangerous, it commands an army, and only Rick's spear can stop it. That is the scene I would show anyone who wants to know why the name carries weight.

That being said, the two films do not match in tone. The spinoff is a swords and sandals adventure, and the 2001 film is a monster movie, so the Mummy movies ranked will tell you which one suits you. If you want the broader cast of monsters, start with the Mummy villains.
