The Mummy Cast by Film: Who Plays Who
The Mummy cast changes from film to film, but Brendan Fraser and John Hannah appear in all three main films. Each entry below names the year, because "The Mummy" is the title of three different films.
In The Mummy (1999), directed by Stephen Sommers, Brendan Fraser plays the soldier of fortune Rick O'Connell, Rachel Weisz plays the librarian Evelyn Carnahan and John Hannah plays her reckless brother Jonathan Carnahan. Arnold Vosloo is the priest Imhotep, Patricia Velásquez plays Anck-Su-Namun and Oded Fehr plays the warrior Ardeth Bay. Kevin J. O'Connor is Beni Gabor, Jonathan Hyde is Allen Chamberlain and Erick Avari is Terence Bey.
The Mummy Returns (2001), also directed by Sommers, keeps Fraser, Weisz, Hannah, Fehr, Vosloo and Velásquez. Freddie Boath joins as the young Alex O'Connell, and Weisz is billed as both Evelyn O'Connell and Nefertiri. Dwayne Johnson makes his film debut as Mathayus, the Scorpion King, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje plays Lock-Nah.
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), directed by Rob Cohen, moves the story to China. Fraser and Hannah return, Maria Bello plays Evelyn and Luke Ford plays the grown Alex. Jet Li plays the emperor Han, Michelle Yeoh plays Zi Yuan and Isabella Leong Lok-Sze plays Lin.
The spin-offs have their own casts. In The Scorpion King (2002), directed by Chuck Russell, Dwayne Johnson leads with Steven Brand as Memnon, Michael Clarke Duncan as Balthazar, Kelly Hu as Cassandra and Bernard Hill as Philos. In The Mummy (2017), directed by Alex Kurtzman, Tom Cruise plays Nick Morton, Annabelle Wallis plays Jennifer Halsey, Sofia Boutella plays the title monster Ahmanet, Jake Johnson plays Chris Vail, Courtney B. Vance plays Colonel Greenway and Russell Crowe plays Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde. The original, The Mummy (1932), was directed by Karl Freund and stars Boris Karloff as Imhotep, who also appears as Ardath Bey, with Zita Johann, David Manners, Arthur Byron and Edward Van Sloan.

Who Directed Each Mummy Movie?
Five different directors have made the Universal Mummy films, and Radio Silence is reported to be the sixth credit when The Mummy: Book of the Dead arrives. Stephen Sommers is the only filmmaker with more than one film in the main saga, having directed The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns (2001).
Karl Freund directed the 1932 original, which runs 73 minutes. Sommers followed with The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns (2001), and Chuck Russell directed the spin-off The Scorpion King in 2002. Rob Cohen took over for the third main film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, released in 2008. Alex Kurtzman directed the 2017 spin-off.
The composers change almost as often as the directors. James Dietrich scored the 1932 film, Jerry Goldsmith scored The Mummy (1999), Alan Silvestri scored The Mummy Returns, John Debney scored The Scorpion King, Randy Edelman scored Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and Brian Tyler scored the 2017 film. More on the music is in the mummy soundtrack.
The fourth main film is reported to be directed by Radio Silence, the duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, from a script by David Coggeshall. TheWrap named Radio Silence and Coggeshall in November 2025, and the producers it reported are Sean Daniel, William Sherak, James Vanderbilt and Paul Neinstein. Who Returns and Who Was Recast in The Mummy Movies?
Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reported to be returning for The Mummy: Book of the Dead, and two roles were recast across the earlier main films: Evelyn and Alex O'Connell. The A.V. Club reported on October 15, 2026 that the cast also includes John Hannah, Kevin J. O'Connor, Oded Fehr, Numan Acar and Michael Johnston. The reports do not name their characters, so treat those castings as reported, not confirmed in detail.
Why does that matter for the recasting? Evelyn was played by Weisz in 1999 and 2001, then by Maria Bello in 2008, and Variety reported Bello as the replacement for Weisz. Alex O'Connell went from Freddie Boath as a child in 2001 to Luke Ford as an adult in 2008. If Weisz does return for the fourth film, it would bring back the actor the third film replaced.
Arnold Vosloo played Imhotep in the first two films, and Patricia Velásquez played Anck-Su-Namun and Meela alongside him. Neither is named in the reports on the new film. In the third film the threat is Jet Li's emperor Han, a new villain, so the saga has already shown it can run without Imhotep.
In my opinion, the best news for fans is O'Connor and Fehr on the cast list. Beni Gabor and Ardeth Bay are supporting roles people still quote, and if those are the parts they play (the reports do not say), the new film is after the 1999 ensemble feel and not only its two leads. That is a read on the reports, not a confirmed plot.
The spin-offs share almost no cast with the main saga. Dwayne Johnson is the bridge, playing Mathayus in The Mummy Returns and again in The Scorpion King. The 2017 film starts fresh with Tom Cruise, Annabelle Wallis, Sofia Boutella, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance and Russell Crowe, and none of the Fraser era actors appear in its top billing. To see how the films connect, the mummy movies in order lays out the sequence, and the mummy movies hub covers the whole series.
