The Scorpion King (2002): Cast, Plot, Ending and Where to Watch

The Scorpion King (2002) is a Universal Pictures spinoff of The Mummy Returns, directed by Chuck Russell, with Dwayne Johnson as the assassin Mathayus, the man who becomes the Scorpion King. It runs 92 minutes, cost $60 million to make and grossed about $181 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. It is the fourth film in release order and the second in chronological order, because the story plays out in ancient times, long before Rick O'Connell digs anything up.

What Is the Plot of The Scorpion King?

The Scorpion King is the story of Mathayus, an Akkadian assassin hired to kill a sorceress who is helping a warlord conquer the desert tribes. The setup is simple and it moves quickly, which suits a 92 minute adventure.

In ancient times the conqueror Memnon is crushing the tribes one by one, and he has an unfair advantage: a seer whose visions warn him about every attack before it lands. King Pheron hires a team of Akkadian assassins, including Mathayus and his brother Jesup, to take her out. The job goes wrong when Pheron's son Takmet betrays the plan and the assassins are ambushed. Mathayus survives, escapes a deadly punishment in the desert with the help of a thief named Arpid, and sets out to finish what he started.

If you have only seen the mummy returns, which is set in 1933, this is the same character given his own origin story, set in ancient times and with no mummies in sight. Think of it as a sword and sandal road trip rather than a tomb raid.

The Scorpion King Soundtrack and Score

John Debney composed the score for The Scorpion King (2002), and it was released as "The Scorpion King: Original Motion Picture Score" by Varèse Sarabande on June 18, 2002. A second album, "The Scorpion King: Music From and Inspired by the Motion Picture", came out from UMG Soundtracks on March 26, 2002, nearly three months earlier.

The two releases serve different listeners. The score album carries 14 tracks of Debney's work for the film, so it is the one to choose if you want the orchestral music written for Mathayus and his desert campaign against Memnon. The companion album, released as a soundtrack and not as a score, runs to 16 tracks. Debney is the only composer credited on the film, and the score album is the only release credited to him.

Neither album has a song list that can be tied to a scene, so no individual track is placed in the film. If you want to hear the film's own music, start with the score album and treat the companion album as a separate listen.

For every composer and album across the saga, see the mummy soundtrack.

The Scorpion King Plot in FullSpoilers

The full plot runs from a failed assassination in the desert to the fall of Memnon and the crowning of Mathayus as the Scorpion King.

Memnon, a conqueror, is overrunning the desert tribes with the help of a seer named Cassandra, whose visions let him foresee enemy moves. King Pheron hires three Akkadian assassins, Mathayus, his brother Jesup and their friend Rama, to kill her. Takmet betrays the plan, the Akkadians are ambushed, Rama is killed, Jesup is executed and Mathayus is left in the desert to die. He escapes with help from Arpid and swears to complete the mission.

Mathayus slips into Memnon's city of Gomorrah and finds Cassandra, but he chooses to take her with him instead of killing her. He fights off Memnon's men, including the captain Thorak, and is poisoned, but Cassandra heals him. The trio then looks for the explosives maker Philos and is captured by the rebel leader Balthazar. Mathayus defeats Balthazar, who then offers him shelter. Cassandra sees visions of danger, and she and Mathayus grow close.

Cassandra goes back to Memnon to try to kill him, while Mathayus, Balthazar, Arpid, Philos and the rebels attack the stronghold. Balthazar kills Takmet, Cassandra stops a guard from killing Mathayus, and Mathayus finishes Memnon with an arrow. Memnon's remaining soldiers yield, and Mathayus is named the Scorpion King.

When Did The Scorpion King Premiere and Release?

The Scorpion King premiered on April 17, 2002, two days before its US theatrical release on April 19, 2002.

The UK release date is also reported as April 19, 2002, and Australia followed a day earlier on April 18, 2002, according to The Numbers. The premiere's city and venue have not been published. All three release dates are reported rather than confirmed.

The film sits fourth in release order, after the mummy returns in 2001 and before the mummy tomb of the dragon emperor in 2008. It carried a PG-13 rating in the US, a 12 in the UK and an M in Australia.

The Scorpion King Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending crowns Mathayus without pretending the peace will hold, and in my opinion that is the smartest choice the film makes.

With Memnon dead and his army surrendering, Mathayus is hailed as the Scorpion King. He and Balthazar part as friends, which closes the rivalry that began when Balthazar captured him and Mathayus beat him in a fight. Then Cassandra warns that the peace will not last, and Mathayus answers that he will shape his own destiny.

Why does that exchange matter? Cassandra spent the whole film as a seer whose visions gave Memnon his edge, and later gave Mathayus warnings of his own. So, when she predicts trouble, the film is cashing in the one rule it set up: her visions are reliable. Mathayus refusing to accept the forecast is the character beat, because he began the story as a hired killer following orders and ends it choosing his own path. That is a neat bookend for a man who was left in the desert to die after Takmet's betrayal.

Every other thread is tied off. Memnon dies by Mathayus's arrow, Takmet dies at Balthazar's hands, and Cassandra saves Mathayus from a guard during the assault on the stronghold. Rama and Jesup are dead from the opening ambush, so the only brotherhood left standing is the odd crew of Arpid, Philos, Balthazar and the rebels.

There is also the matter of how it sits beside the saga. Dwayne Johnson is billed eighth in the mummy returns (2001), a 130 minute film crowded with the O'Connell family. At 92 minutes, this film gives him the whole frame and lets the title he only held there be earned on screen. I think the ending works better than a bigger cliffhanger would have, because it is tidy on plot and uncertain on the future, which is exactly where a spinoff about an origin should leave a character.

Where Was The Scorpion King Filmed?

Universal has not published a list of filming locations for The Scorpion King (2002), and neither Box Office Mojo nor The Numbers gives one.

What the film shows is clear enough. The story moves through open desert, the tribal lands Memnon is overrunning, and Gomorrah, the conqueror's walled city, where Mathayus finds Cassandra. It then climbs to Memnon's stronghold for the final assault. Those settings are fictional ancient places, so they say nothing about where the cameras stood.

If you want a sense of how the saga treats real locations, the mummy 1999 is the better starting point, since its Hamunaptra desert dig is built around a named lost city.
