Who Plays Lotso (voice)?

Who Is Lotso in Toy Story 3?

Lotso, also known as Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear, is the main antagonist of Toy Story 3 (2010), directed by Lee Unkrich: a teddy bear who smells of strawberries and presides over Sunnyside Daycare. Ned Beatty voices him, and the credits list the role as "Lotso (voice)", with Beatty billed tenth in a cast led by Tom Hanks and Tim Allen.

Why is he called Lotso? The credits use the short form of his full name, and it suits the cuddly face he shows to every new arrival. That friendly surface is the heart of the character, because the toys who meet him first see a kind host and only later see how the daycare is really run.

What color is Lotso Bear? The credits and the film define him by his strawberry scent and his huggable look more than by a named color, and the studio materials behind this profile give no official color description. The scent is the detail the story keeps returning to.

Is he good or evil? In the story he is the villain, and the film treats his rule over Sunnyside as something Woody and the others must escape. He is the evil bear of Toy Story 3, and none of Andy's own toys share that role. If you are choosing the film for a young family, the official rating is G in the US, U in the UK and G in Australia. For the wider rogues gallery, see our guide to toy story villains.

Toy Story 3 reached US theaters on June 18, 2010, as the third main film in the saga, and you can place it in the full toy story movies in order guide. The bear belongs to that one film, so his whole story sits there.

Lotso's Story Arc in Toy Story 3Spoilers

The bear's arc in Toy Story 3 runs from gracious host to ruler of the daycare to a figure left behind on the road. It begins when Andy's toys, who have climbed into a donation box after a mix-up with the trash, arrive at Sunnyside Daycare and are welcomed by a cheerful, strawberry scented teddy. Andy is about to leave for college, and the toys are hungry to be played with again, so the offer of a home with plenty of children lands well.

Woody sees it differently. He knows Andy never meant to throw his toys away, so he refuses to stay and heads for home while the others settle in. They soon find that the bear rules the daycare like a dictator, and that newcomers are sent to the rough toddler room.

The control gets personal when Buzz is switched into demo mode and starts obeying orders. Meanwhile Woody meets a girl named Bonnie, who takes him home, and he hears the truth about the bear from her other toys. That knowledge sends him back to rescue his friends.

The break out that follows is messy: a reset leaves Buzz speaking only Spanish, and the daycare gang catches the toys again. The chase carries everyone into a garbage truck and then a landfill with a recycling and incinerator plant. The toys are nearly destroyed there before the Aliens rescue them with a crane, and the bear ends up strapped to the front of a garbage truck.

Why did he turn evil, and why was he so mean? The film hands that explanation to Bonnie's toys, who tell Woody the truth. What plays out on screen at Sunnyside is the result: a leader who uses charm to win trust and punishment, such as the toddler room, to keep order.

Lotso's Relationships: Woody, Buzz and the Sunnyside Toys

The villain's most important relationship is with Woody, because Woody is the one toy who refuses the welcome. Woody leaves Sunnyside to go home to Andy, and when he learns the truth from Bonnie's toys he returns to save his friends, which puts the two on opposite sides of the story. One toy wants to belong to a child, and the other wants to run the place where children play.

Buzz is the toy the bear controls most directly. After Buzz Lightyear is switched into demo mode he follows orders, and the later reset that leaves him speaking only Spanish adds an odd twist to a tense escape.

The rest of Andy's group, including Jessie, Rex, Hamm and Mr. Potato Head, lands at Sunnyside too. Newcomers there are the ones sent to the rough toddler room, and the bear's gang is the muscle that catches the escaping toys a second time.

Bonnie's toys matter as well, since they are the ones who give Woody the truth. At the end of the film Barbie, Ken and Big Baby have helped make Sunnyside a better place for the toys who live there, which suggests the daycare's problem was how it was run and not the building or the children.

For contrast, Gabby Gabby in Toy Story 4 (2019), directed by Josh Cooley, is another toy who wants a child of her own, but her story ends in comfort for a lost girl and not in control over others.

What Happens to Lotso at the End of Toy Story 3?Spoilers

What happened with Lotso? At the end of Toy Story 3, he is left strapped to the front of a garbage truck. That image follows the toys' escape from the landfill, where the Aliens rescue them with a crane as they are nearly destroyed at the incinerator plant.

The film does not show the bear gaining anything from his scheme. Andy gives all of his toys to Bonnie, says goodbye and drives off to college, and the toys begin a new life with her. A closing sequence shows that Barbie, Ken and Big Baby have helped make Sunnyside a better place for the toys there.

That the villain is caught on a truck, and not beaten by the heroes in a fight, says something about how the film handles him. The toys get free, and the consequence arrives from the world around him.

Best Lotso Moments, and Why He Works as a Villain

In my opinion, the best scene for this villain is the welcome at Sunnyside, because it makes the danger feel real. A strawberry scented bear who offers a home and children to play with is a hard pitch to refuse right after the toys have escaped the curb, and it makes the later reveal sting more.

I also rate the toddler room threat highly. He does not need to shout when newcomers can be sent there, and it shows how a leader can control a crowd with a single room and a few loyal helpers.

The landfill chase works because it ties his rule to a much larger danger. It could be argued that his menace is also the most personal in the series, since each earlier foe goes for a different fear. Sid in Toy Story (1995) wrecks toys openly, and Al McWhiggin in Toy Story 2 steals Woody to sell him to a museum. The bear, by comparison, offers what toys want most, which is to be played with, and then uses it as leverage. That is closer to the pull in Toy Story 2, where Jessie and the others urge Woody to come to Japan so that he will never be outgrown, but here one ruler runs the whole room.

That being said, the film never lets him win the argument. Woody's insistence that Andy still cares is the story's answer, and the Aliens' crane rescue gives that answer a big, satisfying set piece.
