Who Plays Woody (voice)?

Woody Toy Story: Who He Is and Who Voices Him

Woody is the cowboy doll who leads Andy's toys, and Tom Hanks provides his voice in every main Toy Story film. He is introduced in Toy Story (1995), directed by John Lasseter, as the trusted leader of the toys in Andy's room and Andy's favorite. That is the whole of his early identity: a dependable sheriff figure who keeps the group together whenever the people leave the room.

He also has a past of his own. In Toy Story 2 (1999), also directed by Lasseter, the toy collector Al McWhiggin spots Woody at a yard sale and steals him. In Al's apartment Woody learns that he was once the star of an old TV show called Woody's Roundup, which makes him a collectible as well as a toy. Al plans to sell the whole Roundup set to a toy museum in Tokyo, and the set is only complete with Woody.

In the credits he appears as "Woody (voice)". Hanks is billed first in the first four films and second in Toy Story 5 (2026), where Joan Cusack's Jessie takes top billing. Woody does not appear in the spin-off Lightyear (2022), in which Chris Evans voices Buzz Lightyear.

So, how would you describe him to someone who has never seen the films? A loyal, proud, sometimes jealous cowboy doll who cares more about the kid who owns him than about his own comfort. His closest friends in the toy box include Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, Slinky Dog, Rex and Hamm. For the full list of voices, see the Toy Story cast page.

Woody's Story Arc Across the Toy Story FilmsSpoilers

Woody's arc runs from being the favorite toy to learning that love for a child can mean letting go. In Toy Story (1995), he feels pushed aside when Andy receives a Buzz Lightyear action figure for his birthday. Woody tries to put Buzz out of the way before a family outing to Pizza Planet, but an accident sends Buzz out of a window. The other toys blame Woody, and the two end up stranded together. They are snatched by Sid, Andy's destructive neighbor, and Woody uses Sid's patched together toys to scare him into treating his playthings kindly. Woody and Buzz then race after the moving truck, and the rocket Sid strapped to Buzz helps them land in the family car.

In Toy Story 2, Woody is stolen and meets the Roundup toys: Jessie the cowgirl, Bullseye the horse and Stinky Pete the Prospector. Al plans to sell the set to a toy museum in Tokyo, where the toys would be on display and never outgrown. Woody is tempted, yet he decides to go back to Andy, and Jessie and Bullseye return with him. He accepts that Andy will grow up one day, and chooses to enjoy the time they have.

That day arrives in Toy Story 3 (2010), directed by Lee Unkrich. Andy is leaving for college, the toys land at Sunnyside Daycare, and Woody refuses to stay when the others are charmed by Lotso. He meets Bonnie, learns the truth about Lotso, and goes back to rescue his friends. Andy then gives all the toys to Bonnie.

In Toy Story 4 (2019), directed by Josh Cooley, Woody is played with less and less in Bonnie's room, so he devotes himself to protecting Forky. His search for Forky leads him back to Bo Peep, now a lost toy without an owner. In Toy Story 5, Jessie takes the lead in trying to win Bonnie back from a tablet called Lilypad, and Woody and Buzz join the effort.

Woody's Friends, Rivals and Bo Peep

Woody's most important friendship is with Buzz Lightyear, and the toy he grows close to again is Bo Peep. Woody and Buzz begin as rivals in 1995, then become true friends after Sid's house, and the closing scene of that film has them share a nervous smile when Andy receives a puppy. Buzz is the one who tells Woody to follow his heart at the end of Toy Story 4. Read more on Buzz Lightyear.

Bo Peep is voiced by Annie Potts in the first two films, and she is back in Toy Story 4 as a lost toy living without an owner, together with her sheep and the tiny police toy Giggle McDimples. Woody and Bo grow close again during that film, and he decides to stay with her. See Bo Peep for more.

Jessie, voiced by Joan Cusack, joins the family in Toy Story 2 as a fellow member of the Roundup set, and she takes the lead in Toy Story 5. Andy Davis, voiced by John Morris in the first three films, is the child Woody is most loyal to. Read about Andy too.

Is Woody the only toy? Far from it. Slinky Dog, Rex, Hamm and Mr. Potato Head are part of Andy's original group, and Forky, Ducky, Bunny and Duke Caboom arrive in Toy Story 4. The clearest antagonist Woody faces is Lotso, the bear who rules Sunnyside like a dictator, covered on the Toy Story villains page. Gabby Gabby, a doll who wants a child of her own, has her own page too: Gabby Gabby.

What Happens to Woody at the End?Spoilers

Woody ends up on the open road with Bo Peep, no longer tied to a single child's room. In Toy Story 4, he chooses to stay behind with Bo as a lost toy rather than return to Bonnie. Buzz and the others say a tearful goodbye and drive off in the RV, and Woody, Bo and their friends spend their time helping prize toys find children to love. Before leaving, Woody trades his voice box to Gabby Gabby, who wants a child of her own, and she later finds one.

In Toy Story 5, Woody is still out on that road, and a walkie-talkie lets him stay in touch with Buzz, Jessie and the rest of the gang. He helps Jessie's effort to win Bonnie back, and Blaze returns Jessie and Bullseye to Bonnie at the end.

What comes next is not announced. No studio source gives Toy Story 6 a release date, a greenlight or a production status, and the Toy Story 5 credits scenes tease a high tech Zurg toy without confirming a sequel. Any date seen on fan sites is unsourced rumor. Whether Woody appears in a sixth film has not been confirmed. For the order of all the films, use the Toy Story movies in order guide.

Woody's Best Moments: A Fan's Picks

In my opinion, Woody's best moments are the ones where he picks someone else over himself. The first is Toy Story 2, when he is surrounded by the Roundup toys and the promise of never being outgrown, and he still goes home to Andy. It could be argued that this choice is the emotional center of the whole saga, because it gives the later films their stakes.

The second is the escape from Sid's house in Toy Story (1995). Woody and Buzz catching the moving truck with the rocket is a great set piece, and the film uses it to finish their friendship rather than to start it.

Third, Toy Story 3 has Woody turning back to rescue his friends at Sunnyside, even though he knows Andy's real plan. Perhaps that loyalty matters more than any single gag, and it sets up Andy's goodbye to the toys.

Fourth, Toy Story 4 gives him the hardest decision of the series: handing over his voice box to help Forky and Gabby Gabby, then choosing Bo Peep and the lost toy life. If you are a parent picking one film to show a child about growing up, Toy Story 3 is where I would point you. If you want to see where these films land against each other, I have ranked them on the Toy Story movies ranked page.
