Who Is Buzz Lightyear?
Buzz Lightyear is a Space Ranger action figure who believes he is a real hero and not a toy, and he shares the lead of the saga with Woody. He arrives in Toy Story (1995), directed by John Lasseter, as the birthday gift that Andy adores at once, which leaves the cowboy doll Woody feeling pushed aside. Tim Allen voices him in all five main films, from that first picture to Toy Story 5 in 2026.
There is also a second Buzz on screen. Lightyear (2022), directed by Angus MacLane, is the spinoff in which Chris Evans voices the Star Command ranger himself. So, if you are searching for the old Buzz Lightyear movie, the answer depends on whether you mean the 1995 film or the 2022 spinoff.
The credits use a few labels for the character. Buzz Lightyear is the main credit, Zurg / Old Buzz is the credit James Brolin holds in Lightyear, and Spanish Buzz is the label tied to the Spanish speaking reset in Toy Story 3.
What is his mission? In the toy films, Buzz sincerely thinks he is a real space ranger stranded on a strange planet. In Lightyear, the mission is real: Buzz, his commander and best friend Alisha Hawthorne and a rookie investigate a hostile world called T'Kani Prime, and a mistake of his strands the whole crew there. For parents, the official US ratings are G for the first four Toy Story films and PG for Lightyear and Toy Story 5.

Buzz Lightyear's Story Arc Across Six FilmsSpoilers
Buzz begins as a toy who does not know he is a toy, and he ends as the steady friend who lets other people go. In Toy Story (1995), Woody tries to put Buzz out of the way before a family outing to Pizza Planet, and an accident sends Buzz out of a window. The two end up stranded together at a gas station, then get snatched by Sid, Andy's destructive neighbor. In Sid's house a TV ad shows Buzz that he is only a toy, and he falls into despair. Woody cheers him up, the two begin to respect each other, and they finish the film by catching the moving truck with a rocket that Sid had strapped to Buzz.
In Toy Story 2 (1999), Buzz leads the rescue. Al McWhiggin steals Woody, and Buzz and Andy's other toys cross town to bring him home, facing one obstacle after another. When Stinky Pete tries to stop Woody from leaving, the rescuers, Buzz especially, push on to reach him.
In Toy Story 3 (2010), directed by Lee Unkrich, Buzz is the one who is rescued and then changed. At Sunnyside Daycare he is switched into demo mode and starts obeying Lotso. When the group makes a break for it, a reset accidentally leaves him speaking only Spanish. The toys end up in a garbage truck and then a landfill, and the Aliens rescue them with a crane. Andy then hands all the toys to Bonnie.
In Toy Story 4 (2019), directed by Josh Cooley, Buzz gets separated from the group at a traveling carnival, where he meets the prize toys Ducky and Bunny. He and Jessie later rally the other toys to drive the RV back to the fair, and he tells Woody to follow his heart.
Lightyear (2022) shows the human Space Ranger's version of the arc. Buzz keeps testing a hyperspace fuel crystal, and each short flight costs years on the ground, so Alisha grows old and dies while he is away. A final test jump lands him 22 years later in a world attacked by Zyclops robots serving the giant Zurg. He teams up with Alisha's granddaughter Izzy, a nervous recruit named Mo and an older ex-convict named Darby, with help from the robot cat Sox. Zurg turns out to be an older Buzz from another timeline who wants to undo the stranding, and the younger Buzz refuses because it would erase Alisha's life and everyone who came after her.
In Toy Story 5 (2026), directed by Andrew Stanton, Buzz joins Woody and Jessie in trying to win Bonnie back from Lilypad, a frog shaped tablet. A separate thread follows a crowd of next generation Buzz Lightyear toys, and in the climax that army, which can turn into drones, flies everyone to safety after the chase to the donation truck.
Buzz Lightyear's Friends, Rivals and Family
Buzz's most important bond is with Woody, and it runs from jealousy to the deepest friendship in the saga. Their first night together in Toy Story (1995) is a rivalry, but the trip through Sid's house turns it into respect. After that, the pair stays close through every sequel: Buzz leads the rescue in Toy Story 2, Woody goes back for the others in Toy Story 3, and in Toy Story 4 Buzz encourages Woody to stay with Bo Peep. In Toy Story 5, a walkie talkie lets Woody keep in touch with Buzz, Jessie and the rest of the gang. See the profile of Woody for his side of it.
Andy adores Buzz from the moment he unwraps him, and the profile of Andy covers that side of the story. Jessie becomes his teammate from Toy Story 2 onward, and the two rally the toys together in Toy Story 4. In Toy Story 3, Buzz is switched into demo mode and starts obeying Lotso, and in Toy Story 4 Buzz meets Ducky and Bunny at the carnival.
In Lightyear, the relationships belong to the ranger. Alisha Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba) is his commander and best friend, and her granddaughter Izzy Hawthorne (Keke Palmer) becomes one of his team. Mo Morrison (Taika Waititi), Darby Steel (Dale Soules) and the cat Sox (Peter Sohn) complete the crew, with Commander Burnside (Isiah Whitlock Jr.) as the figure of authority. Zurg is the rival, and his link to Buzz is the film's secret.
Is Buzz Lightyear in love? No story across the six films gives him a romance. What the films give him is loyalty, a best friend in Alisha, and a long friendship with Woody. What Happens to Buzz Lightyear?Spoilers
Buzz survives every film, and each ending leaves him with a home and a team. At the close of Toy Story (1995), he and Woody are true friends, and they share a nervous smile as Andy receives a puppy at Christmas. In Toy Story 3, Andy hands his toys to Bonnie, and Buzz settles into a new life in her room. In Toy Story 4, Woody stays behind with Bo Peep as a lost toy, and Buzz and the others say a tearful goodbye before driving off in the RV.
In Lightyear, the ranger accepts T'Kani Prime as his home instead of chasing a way back. Zurg grabs the fuel in the crash landing, and Buzz shoots it from his ejected position, causing an explosion that appears to kill Zurg. Commander Burnside then allows Buzz to bring back the Space Ranger Corps, and Buzz picks Izzy, Mo, Darby and Sox as his team. They set off with a fresh fuel crystal to follow a mysterious signal, and a late scene indicates that Zurg survived.
In Toy Story 5, Buzz is still with Bonnie's toys and still in touch with Woody by walkie talkie. The credits scenes show kids receiving next generation Buzz toys and a child pulling out a high tech Zurg toy.
Is there a new Buzz Lightyear coming out? No release date has been given. A sixth Toy Story has no announced date, greenlight or production status in any trade or studio report, and the Toy Story 5 credits scenes tease a Zurg toy without confirming a sequel. See Toy Story 6 for the confirmed facts.
Best Buzz Lightyear Moments, Picked by Tessa
In my opinion, the best Buzz moments are the ones where the confident ranger is gently taken apart and then rebuilt by people who care about him. Here are my five picks, with the caveat that taste varies.
First, the TV ad in Sid's house in Toy Story (1995). It could be argued that this is the most honest scene in the saga, because a toy learns that he is a toy and falls into despair. Woody's cheerful attempt to console him is where the friendship begins.
Second, the rocket finish. Watching Buzz and Woody catch the moving truck with Sid's rocket is pure set piece fun, and it lands the film's emotional point at the same time.
Third, the Spanish reset in Toy Story 3. It is a comic twist on a scary moment, since the demo mode that had made Buzz obey Lotso is followed by a reset that leaves him speaking only Spanish. For a parent, it is also a handy way to keep younger viewers laughing through a darker middle stretch.
Fourth, Buzz telling Woody to follow his heart in Toy Story 4. Buzz had every reason to say no, and instead he says goodbye, which is the most grown up thing he does in the series.
Fifth, the refusal in Lightyear. When Zurg demands the fuel to undo the stranding, Buzz says no because it would erase Alisha's life and everyone who came after her. Perhaps that is why the spinoff works for me: the ranger has a heart as big as the toy's.
If you are choosing tonight's film for a young child, start with Toy Story (1995), rated G in the US, and keep Lightyear, rated PG, for children who can handle a longer, more serious space story.
