Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Plot: What Is the Setup?

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 opens with the team living on Knowhere and still adjusting to the losses they have suffered. Adam Warlock, a golden being made by the Sovereign, then attacks the Guardians, and Rocket is gravely wounded in the fight.

The healing gear that should save him fails, because Rocket's body carries a built in kill switch that stops the medical packs from working. To help their friend, the Guardians must track down the files and codes held by the company that once controlled his origins. Rocket lingers close to death while they search, and his memories begin to show how he was made. In other words, this is Rocket's story first and a space chase second, which is useful to know before you press play.

Full Plot Summary of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3Spoilers

After Adam Warlock's attack on Knowhere, the Guardians learn that the kill switch placed in Rocket long ago keeps his body from accepting the healing packs. While he lies unconscious, his memories take us to the lab of the High Evolutionary, a cruel scientist obsessed with building a perfect society. Young Rocket was a test animal there, and he bonded with other altered animals. The High Evolutionary killed those friends, and Rocket escaped.

In the present, the team breaks into the corporation Orgocorp to look for the override code, only to learn that an executive removed it. The trail leads to Counter-Earth, a world the High Evolutionary created, where Quill and Groot get the code by force. Quill uses it to disable the kill switch and bring Rocket back.

The High Evolutionary then attacks Counter-Earth, killing many of its people and Ayesha. The Guardians rescue the genetically altered children held on his ship and free the captive animals. Rocket confronts his creator, who is finally defeated, and the ship is destroyed while the children and animals are brought to safety.

Afterward the team splits up. Quill leaves for Earth to see his grandfather, Gamora returns to the Ravagers, and Mantis travels with the Abilisks. Nebula and Drax stay on Knowhere to care for the rescued children, and Rocket becomes the leader of a new Guardians team.

Release Date and Premiere: When Did Vol. 3 Come Out?

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 opened in the UK on May 3, 2023, in Australia on May 4, 2023 and in the US on May 5, 2023. Disney confirms the UK and US dates, and Box Office Mojo reports the Australian one.

The world premiere took place on April 27, 2023 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California, and Disney also held premiere events in Paris and Seoul for the cast and filmmakers. In the UK, Disney announced that the film was number one at the UK and Ireland box office, with the biggest three day opening weekend of 2023.

In release order it follows Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and comes before The Marvels. Our marvel movies in order guide shows the full run.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hands the team to Rocket and closes this lineup's story. Peter Quill steps down, names Rocket the captain and goes back to Earth to reunite with his grandfather. Gamora rejoins the Ravagers and Mantis sets off on her own path, while Nebula and Drax settle on Knowhere to raise the rescued children. Rocket leads a new crew of Groot, Kraglin, Cosmo, Adam Warlock and Phyla.

Why does it land? In my opinion, because the film earns it. Rocket's backstory is the spine of the plot: his memories of the High Evolutionary's lab, where the other altered animals he bonded with were killed, are the question the movie keeps asking, namely who he becomes once he is no longer a lab experiment. The captain's chair is the answer. Perhaps that is also why Guardians 3 is so good for many viewers: the stakes are one friend's life and a ship full of children rather than the fate of a galaxy. Compare that with Avengers: Infinity War, where Thanos hunts the six Infinity Stones and the scale is cosmic. Here Gunn keeps the camera close to a single wounded raccoon on a table.

There is a neat contrast with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, where Quill met Ego, a man who claimed to be his father. Here he chooses a different family tie and goes home to his grandfather. The first Guardians of the Galaxy begins in 1988 with young Quill taken from Earth by Yondu and the Ravagers, so ending the trilogy with Quill back on Earth reads as a deliberate circle. Gamora returning to the Ravagers, the crew that raised Quill, tidies that loop further.

That being said, the farewell is a little tidy for Nebula and Drax, who get a quiet job rather than a send off. It is a fair trade, though. The trilogy runs from 2014 to 2017 to 2023, with Gunn directing all three, and the final scene points toward a new generation of Guardians instead of a reset.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Post Credit Scene: Are There Two?Spoilers

Yes, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has two scenes tied to the credits: one placed in the middle of them and one at the very end. The first gives the new Guardians team, led by Rocket, a mission to carry out. The second returns to Earth, where Quill sits with his grandfather, and a closing note says the Legendary Star-Lord will return.

What do they add? In my opinion, the first scene proves the ending's handover is real, since Rocket is already in the captain's seat and the crew from the final moments is working together. The second feels like a quiet bookend. The first film opens in 1988 with Quill taken from Earth, so ending on him at home with family is a gentle echo, and the Star-Lord note leaves the door ajar without promising anything. It does not name a film or a date, so it is best read as a hint about the character, not a schedule. Other Marvel Studios endings, such as the Avengers: Doomsday teaser culture around Avengers: Endgame, tend to point at a specific next event. This one points at a person.

Filming Locations and Production

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was shot in Atlanta, Georgia, with principal photography at Trilith Studios from November 8, 2021 to May 6, 2022, under the working title Hot Christmas.

Production designer Beth Mickle said the film mostly used practical effects, and that StageCraft was ruled out because the sets were too large. That is a different route from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the previous film in release order, which relied on StageCraft for its Quantum Realm. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, a Disney+ special without a film page of its own, was filmed at the same time with the same cast and sets.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Trivia

The facts below show how Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 came together, from casting to the rehiring of its director.

  • Will Poulter was cast as Adam Warlock in October 2021 after auditioning over Zoom.
  • James Gunn changed Cosmo from male to female as a tribute to the Soviet space dog Laika.
  • The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special was filmed at the same time as Vol. 3, with the same cast and sets.
  • John Murphy replaced Tyler Bates as composer, and the score was released digitally on May 3, 2023.
  • Gunn was fired by Disney in July 2018 and later rehired, which delayed the production.

Vol. 2 opened on May 5, 2017, and Vol. 3 followed on May 5, 2023, with Gunn's firing and rehiring delaying the production in between.
