Iron Man 3 (2013): Cast, Plot, Villain and Ending Explained
Iron Man 3 (2013), directed by Shane Black, is the Marvel Studios film in which Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr., faces a terrorist called the Mandarin after the Battle of New York. It is the seventh MCU film by release order and the ninth in chronological order, and it earned more than $1.2 billion worldwide on a $200 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo.
Iron Man 3 follows Tony Stark as he struggles with sleepless nights and anxiety after the alien attack on New York, while a terrorist called the Mandarin claims responsibility for a string of mysterious bombings. The story opens on New Year's Eve 1999, when Stark brushes off a young inventor named Aldrich Killian and meets the scientist Maya Hansen.
In the present day, Stark spends his nights building ever more Iron Man suits, and that obsession puts a strain on his relationship with Pepper Potts. When his friend Happy Hogan is badly hurt in one of the bombings, Stark does something reckless: he publicly challenges the Mandarin and gives out his home address.
Brian Tyler composed the score for Iron Man 3 (2013), and the album "Iron Man 3" was released by Hollywood Records on April 30, 2013, with 20 tracks. Tyler's orchestral music carries the film's action and drama, while a handful of well known songs add a very different texture to certain scenes.
Four songs feature in the film:
"Blue (Da Ba Dee)" by Eiffel 65
"Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit of...)" by Lou Bega
"Jingle Bells (Bombay Dub Orchestra Remix)" by Joe Williams
"Santa Claus Is Back in Town" by Elvis Presley
Two of them belong to the opening flashback set in 1999. "Blue (Da Ba Dee)" plays during that flashback, and "Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit of...)" plays in the background of the same 1999 scene. The pairing quickly places the audience in the late nineties before the story moves to the present day. Later, "Jingle Bells (Bombay Dub Orchestra Remix)" plays while Tony first tries out his Mark 42 armor, a lively pairing of a holiday tune with a testing sequence. Elvis Presley's "Santa Claus Is Back in Town" rounds out the list of songs that appear in the film.

Iron Man 3 Plot Explained: What Happened to Tony Stark?Spoilers
Tony Stark loses his home, his confidence and nearly his life, then rebuilds all three with his own wits rather than his suits. Spoilers follow, so stop reading here if you have not seen the film.
After Stark's televised challenge, helicopters wreck his Malibu home. He escapes in a prototype suit with a failing power supply and ends up in rural Tennessee, where the world believes he is dead. A boy named Harley Keener helps him repair the armor while Stark investigates a blast that matches the earlier bombings. He learns that the bombings were caused by Extremis test subjects who exploded, and that the Mandarin's role is a cover story.
Stark returns to Florida, where Killian has kidnapped Pepper and infected her with Extremis. Colonel James Rhodes has lost the Iron Patriot armor to Killian's men. Stark then finds that the Mandarin is really Trevor Slattery, a drunken actor playing a part. Killian reveals himself as the real mastermind, kills Maya Hansen, and takes Stark prisoner.
Stark escapes and teams up with Rhodes, and they track Killian to a plan to seize the President. Killian takes the President to an oil rig, intending to execute him on live television so that the compromised Vice President can take over. Stark calls in his many remote controlled suits to help, and Pepper seems to die in the fight. Her Extremis powers let her survive, and she helps Stark defeat Killian. Afterwards Stark has the shrapnel near his heart removed and blows up his suits.
Iron Man 3 Release Date and Rollout
Iron Man 3 was released in the US on May 3, 2013, after opening in the UK on April 25 and in Australia on April 24, according to The Numbers. That staggered rollout put the film in front of overseas audiences more than a week before its American opening.
In the US it opened in more than 4,250 theaters, according to TheWrap. It carries a PG-13 rating in the US, 12A in the UK and M in Australia.
China got its own version. Marvel co-produced the film with DMG, and a Chinese cut ran about four minutes longer than the international cut, with extra scenes featuring Fan Bingbing as Doctor Wu's assistant, according to TheWrap. Variety reported that Chinese audiences gave those scenes a mixed response.
Iron Man 3 Ending ExplainedSpoilers
The Iron Man 3 ending closes Tony Stark's story as a man defined by his armor: he destroys every suit, has the shrapnel removed from near his heart and declares that he will always be Iron Man. Spoilers follow.
Killian is killed on the rig and the President is saved. The Vice President and Slattery are arrested. Pepper's Extremis infection is cured, and Happy wakes from his coma. Stark destroys all of his armors as a gesture to Pepper, has surgery to remove the shrapnel, and throws his old arc reactor into the sea.
What does it mean? In my opinion, the blast of suits is a promise about priorities, and the film is honest that it is not a permanent retirement. Stark's trouble began with the Battle of New York in The Avengers (2012), and the film treats his suit addiction as a symptom of panic. Letting go of the armor, and of the arc reactor, is the cure. Yet it could be argued that the line about always being Iron Man tells you the suits will return, and they do: Stark is credited as Tony Stark / Iron Man again in Avengers: Age of Ultron, where he builds an artificial intelligence with Bruce Banner.
As for the Mandarin, the film's boldest move is to turn the villain into a performance. Ben Kingsley's Trevor Slattery is a joke that has a real cost, since his act was used to hide the Extremis explosions. Whether you love or resent that twist is a matter of taste, and I think it is the most memorable choice in the movie, even if it divides fans of the comics. If you ask whether this is the best Iron Man film, I would say it is the most ambitious, and its gross of more than $1.2 billion beats the other two by a wide margin.
Iron Man 3 Post Credit SceneSpoilers
Iron Man 3 has one post credit scene, in which Tony Stark tells his story to Bruce Banner, who falls asleep in the middle of it. Mark Ruffalo plays Banner, uncredited.
The scene doubles as a gag, since Banner nods off while Stark recounts the troubles of the whole film, and it links the story back to the team told in The Avengers (2012).
