Who Is the Bowery King in John Wick?
The Bowery King is a New York underworld figure and one of John Wick's most important allies, played by Laurence Fishburne in three films. The credits list him only by that title, "Bowery King", so the films never give him a separate credited name.
Why is he called the Bowery King? The films do not spell out how he earned the title, and Lionsgate has not published an explanation. What the credits and story do show is that it is a title rather than a personal name, and that the character holds it as a figure of New York's underworld.
He first appears in john wick 2, the 2017 sequel directed by Chad Stahelski, where Fishburne is billed third behind Keanu Reeves and Common. He returns in john wick 3 (2019), billed fourth, and again in john wick 4 (2023), billed fifth, both also directed by Stahelski. He is not among the top credited cast of the 2014 original or of the spinoff ballerina john wick.
Once the High Table turns on John, the Bowery King sits alongside winston john wick as one of the few allies John has left. You can see the full ensemble on the john wick characters index.

What Does the Bowery King Do in John Wick?Spoilers
The Bowery King moves from a credited name in Chapter 2 to the man who takes John in during Chapter 3 and shares the war against the High Table in Chapter 4. Chapter 2 also features Santino D'Antonio, and Chapter 3 opens with John excommunicado after killing him.
Chapter 3 is where the role becomes plain. Every assassin in New York is chasing the bounty on John. He crosses Casablanca, cuts off his ring finger for the Elder and returns to Manhattan, where the High Table strips the Continental of its protected status and sends Zero and his enforcers. Winston then appears to side with the High Table and shoots John, who falls from the roof. John is carried away and ends up with the Bowery King, and the two men agree to fight the High Table together.
By Chapter 4, John is hiding out with the Bowery King in New York before he decides to take the fight to the High Table. The Marquis later destroys the New York Continental, and John wins his freedom in the duel at Sacré-Cœur in Paris. The john wick timeline lays out the full order of those events.
Who Are the Bowery King's Allies and Enemies?
The Bowery King's closest tie is to John Wick, and the second is to Winston, with whom he visits the gravestone in the final scene of Chapter 4. At the end of Chapter 3, John, Winston and the Bowery King agree to join forces against the High Table, which puts him in the same alliance as the owner of the Continental.
His enemies are the High Table and its enforcers. In Chapter 3, the High Table sends Zero, played by Mark Dacascos, and a team after John and Winston. In Chapter 4, the Marquis, played by Bill Skarsgård, escalates the hunt by stripping Winston of his role and destroying the New York Continental. The high table john wick page explains how that ruling body works.

Is the Bowery King Dead? His Fate in John WickSpoilers
The Bowery King is alive at the end of Chapter 4, so the answer to "is the Bowery King dead" is no. After John kills the Marquis, the Harbinger releases John and Caine from their obligations and gives Winston his position back. Winston and the Bowery King later visit a gravestone with John's name on it, next to the grave of John's wife Helen.
That is the last we see of him. The film leaves it open whether John is truly dead, so the Bowery King's future is tied to that question. As for how he survives the war, the films never show it: he is simply there in the ending, standing at the grave.
John Wick: Chapter 5 is in development at Lionsgate, announced at CinemaCon on April 1, 2025, with Keanu Reeves, Chad Stahelski and Thunder Road. No release date has been announced. Follow john wick 5 for updates.
Best Bowery King Moments, Ranked by Impact
In my opinion, the Bowery King's best moments are the ones where he is the safe place at the end of a long fall. The first is the end of Chapter 3: John has just been shot by Winston and dropped from the Continental's roof, and the film's answer is to put him in the Bowery King's care. It could be argued that this scene matters because it lets the audience see how thin John's list of allies has become.
The second is the alliance itself. John, Winston and the Bowery King agree to fight the High Table together, which turns a manhunt into a war and sets up everything Chapter 4 does with the Marquis and the Osaka and Paris set pieces.
The third is the gravestone visit at the end of Chapter 4. Winston and the Bowery King stand at John's marker beside Helen's, and the film chooses not to confirm what it means. Perhaps that is why the Bowery King matters more than his screen time suggests: he is one of the two men left to carry the memory.
