High Table John Wick: Hierarchy, Rules and Key Figures Explained
The High Table in John Wick is the criminal ruling body that wants John Wick dead, and one figure, the Elder, sits above it. It acts through enforcers and officials such as the Adjudicator in John Wick: Chapter 3: Parabellum (2019) and the Harbinger, who carries out its ruling at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023).

What Is the High Table in John Wick?
The High Table is the criminal ruling body of the John Wick underworld, and it is the force that turns one broken rule into a war against one man. It moves to the front of the story in John Wick: Chapter 3: Parabellum (2019), directed by Chad Stahelski, and it is the main opponent of John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023), also directed by Stahelski.
If you are coming from the first film, the scale shifts. John Wick (2014) keeps its story at the level of one crime boss, Viggo Tarasov, and a neutral hotel for criminals, the Continental, run by Winston. The later films zoom out to show who stands above a boss like Viggo, and what that authority will do to a single assassin.
Think of it like the head office of a company that never shows up in the shop. The people at the counter, the hotel managers and the family heads all answer to it, and when head office decides someone is a problem, every branch hears at once. That is why a bounty in these films follows John from city to city.
We take each figure and group in turn below: the rule John broke, the Elder, the Adjudicator, the Harbinger, the Marquis, Winston and the Continental, the D'Antonio family and the Ruska Roma. For the full cast of recurring faces, see our john wick characters guide.
What Rule Did John Wick Break?
John Wick broke the rule of the Continental by killing a member of the High Table inside the hotel, and that act leaves him excommunicado at the start of John Wick: Chapter 3: Parabellum. The man he killed was Santino D'Antonio.
The penalty comes in two steps. John is declared excommunicado, which strips him of the services and protection the underworld normally offers, and he is given a short grace period before a huge bounty takes effect. Chapter 3 opens inside that window, with John hurt and on the run in Manhattan, treating his injuries and gathering what he needs.
The practical lesson is how much a protected place is worth. The Continental under Winston had been John's refuge since john wick 2014, and breaking its rule costs him that refuge and puts every assassin in New York on his trail. For the order in which this plays out across the films, our john wick movies in order guide has both release and chronological sequences.
Who Is Higher Than the High Table? The ElderSpoilers
The Elder sits above the High Table, and the films treat him as the one person with the power to undo John Wick's excommunicado status. Casablanca is where John goes looking for him, and Sofia Al-Azwar, an old associate, gets him there before abandoning him in the desert once the escape from the kasbah turns violent.
The price of a pardon is steep: John must kill Winston Scott and serve the High Table for life. He answers by cutting off his ring finger as a pledge. In my opinion, that scene tells you more about the hierarchy than any speech could, because mercy at the top of this world is only ever a trade for loyalty.
Two actors carry the role. Saïd Taghmaoui plays The Elder in Chapter 3, and George Georgiou takes over in John Wick: Chapter 4. By then John has killed the Elder in Morocco, and that killing is the reason the High Table dispatches the Marquis. For the performers behind the series' recurring faces, see the john wick cast page.
The Adjudicator: The High Table's Official in Chapter 3Spoilers
The Adjudicator is a High Table figure credited in John Wick: Chapter 3: Parabellum, played by Asia Kate Dillon. It is the same chapter in which the High Table strips the Continental of its protected status as punishment and sends Zero and a team of enforcers after John and Winston.
The character is credited only in Chapter 3, and is a different figure from the Harbinger, who appears in Chapter 4. Keeping the two apart is easy if you tie each to its film: the Adjudicator belongs to the film about the punishment, and the Harbinger belongs to the film about the settlement.
The Harbinger: Who Ends the Hunt in Chapter 4Spoilers
The Harbinger is the High Table's representative in John Wick: Chapter 4, played by Clancy Brown, and he is the one who honors the outcome of John's duel with the Marquis. After John shoots and kills the Marquis, the Harbinger frees John, Caine and Caine's daughter from the High Table and restores Winston to his position.
That makes the Harbinger the figure who closes the war that Chapter 3 started. The duel is set for sunrise at Sacré-Cœur in Paris, John must be sponsored by a crime family to qualify, and Winston acts as his second with his own life tied to the result. The Harbinger's release of John and Caine is the payoff for all of that setup.
So, what is the difference between the Adjudicator and the Harbinger in John Wick? The Adjudicator is credited in Chapter 3, during the High Table's punishment of the Continental, while the Harbinger appears in Chapter 4 and honors the result of the duel. Both act for the same body, but the films place them at opposite ends of the conflict.
The Marquis: The High Table's Weapon in Chapter 4Spoilers
Bill Skarsgård plays the Marquis, the young, ruthless aristocrat who becomes the High Table's chosen instrument against John Wick in John Wick: Chapter 4, with the council's full backing behind him. His first moves are administrative as much as violent: he removes Winston from his role, levels the New York Continental and arranges the death of Charon.
The cruelest piece of his plan involves Caine, a blind retired assassin and an old friend of John. Because the Marquis threatens Caine's daughter, Caine has no choice but to return and hunt John. When the formal duel arrives at Sacré-Cœur, the Marquis hands his own place to a reluctant Caine as stand in. John has to fight through a Paris full of assassins and up the Rue Foyatier steps to get there. Caine wounds him, then Winston reminds John that his third shot is still unfired, and that shot ends the Marquis.
Winston and the Continental: Where the High Table's Rules BiteSpoilers
Winston, played by Ian McShane, owns the Continental, and his position is the clearest measure of how the High Table treats those who bend its rules. He appears in all five films released so far, from John Wick (2014), where the hotel gives John a place of rest and help, through to John Wick: Chapter 4. Our winston john wick page covers him in full.
In John Wick: Chapter 3: Parabellum, the High Table punishes the Continental by stripping its protected status. Winston then appears to side with the High Table and shoots John, who falls from the roof. The betrayal turns out to be a ruse, and John is carried to safety by the Bowery King, with whom he and Winston agree to fight the High Table together.
In Chapter 4, the cost lands on Winston directly. The Marquis strips him of his role and destroys the New York Continental, and the Harbinger gives Winston his position back after the duel. Charon, the Continental's manager played by Lance Reddick, is killed along the way. The Osaka Continental, run by John's friend Shimazu, is where John fights off waves of High Table enforcers, and Shimazu dies protecting him. For the manager himself, see charon john wick.
Santino and Gianna D'Antonio: The Family Behind the Rule BreakSpoilers
Santino D'Antonio is the High Table member whose killing sets off the whole punishment, and he is credited in John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017), directed by Chad Stahelski, alongside Gianna D'Antonio. Riccardo Scamarcio plays Santino and Claudia Gerini plays Gianna.
John Wick: Chapter 3: Parabellum begins with John excommunicado after killing Santino, so his name matters to anyone tracing the High Table. Gianna is credited as a character in Chapter 2, and the pair share a surname. You can read more about him in the santino d'antonio john wick profile.
What Are the Different Tribes in John Wick? The Crime FamiliesSpoilers
Crime families are the building blocks of the John Wick underworld, and the Ruska Roma is the one the series returns to again and again. Anjelica Huston plays its Director in John Wick: Chapter 3: Parabellum, where she arranges John's passage to Casablanca. The same tradition raises Eve in Ballerina (2025), directed by Len Wiseman, and it is the Director who sends John Wick after her.
Chapter 4 turns the family into a plot mechanism. A formal duel against the Marquis requires a sponsoring crime family, so John travels to the Ruska Roma in Berlin. Natalia Tena's Katia, who leads it there, sets a price: John must first kill Killa Harkan. Caine and a bounty hunter known as the Tracker help him do it.
In practice, that makes a family the only door through which an individual can challenge the council. For Eve's story, see ballerina john wick.
High Table John Wick Explained: How the Hierarchy WorksSpoilers
In my opinion, the High Table works because the films never ask you to memorize it: they show its power through what happens to the people around John. The structure that comes through is short. The Elder sits above the council, the High Table sets the punishments, officials such as the Adjudicator and the Harbinger carry them out, and families like the Ruska Roma can sponsor a challenge when the rules allow one.
What I find most interesting is how the series uses the Continental as a measuring stick. In John Wick (2014), the hotel is a refuge. By Chapter 3 it is a liability for Winston, and by Chapter 4 it is rubble in New York. Each film moves the High Table closer to the center of the story, and the stakes grow with it, from a puppy and a stolen car to a duel at sunrise.
It could be argued that Chapter 4 resolves the council too neatly, since the Harbinger's release of John and Caine settles everything with one ruling. That being said, the choice fits the series' love of formal rules, and it sets up the grave that Winston and the Bowery King visit at the end. The post credit scene adds a final note: Caine reunites with his daughter in Paris, and Akira, seeking revenge for her father's death, approaches him with a knife.
The next chapter is in development. Lionsgate announced John Wick: Chapter 5 at CinemaCon on April 1, 2025, with Keanu Reeves, director Chad Stahelski and Thunder Road, and no release date has been announced. If you are new, start with Chapter 3 for the punishment and Chapter 4 for the settlement, then follow the status of john wick 5.
