John Wick Characters: Who Is Who in the Films

The John Wick characters fall into three groups: the hitman at the center, the allies who shelter or fight beside him, and the enemies who hunt him for the High Table or for personal reasons. This list covers the four main films, John Wick (2014), John Wick: Chapter 2, John Wick: Chapter 3: Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4, plus Ballerina, a spinoff set during Chapter 3. John Wick, played by Keanu Reeves, is a retired hitman who is grieving his wife Helen (Bridget Moynahan) when the first film begins. Before she died, Helen arranged for a puppy to be delivered to him, and Iosef Tarasov's gang kills it while stealing his classic car. So, what type of character is John? In my opinion, he is a grief driven revenge hero rather than a typical action lead, because every escalation in the series traces back to a loss. Reeves appears in all five films, Ballerina included.

John's friends are mostly the people who run the places he hides in. Winston, played by Ian McShane, owns the Continental, the neutral hotel for criminals where John finds rest and help in the first film. Winston is billed in all five films. Charon, played by Lance Reddick, is credited as Hotel Manager / Charon in 2014 and as Charon afterward, and TheWrap reported Ballerina as Reddick's final appearance in the role.

Caine, played by Donnie Yen in Chapter 4, is a blind retired assassin and an old friend of John, forced to hunt him when the Marquis threatens Caine's daughter. The Bowery King, played by Laurence Fishburne, appears in Chapters 2, 3 and 4, and John is hiding out with him in New York when Chapter 4 opens. Shimazu (Hiroyuki Sanada), who runs the Osaka Continental, and Marcus (Willem Dafoe), John's old friend in the first film, round out the people he trusts.

The villains escalate with each film. Viggo Tarasov, played by Michael Nyqvist, is the powerful crime boss John used to work for and the father of Iosef (Alfie Allen). Santino D'Antonio, played by Riccardo Scamarcio in Chapter 2, matters because John's killing of him leaves John excommunicado as Chapter 3 begins. In that film the High Table sends Zero (Mark Dacascos) and a team of enforcers after John and Winston, and the Elder, the one figure above the High Table, is the person John must reach in Casablanca.

In Chapter 4, the Marquis, played by Bill Skarsgård, is a young, ruthless aristocrat who has the High Table's full backing. He punishes Winston and destroys the New York Continental. For the organization behind all of them, see the High Table page.

The main female characters are Sofia, Eve and the women of the Ruska Roma. Sofia Al-Azwar, played by Halle Berry in Chapter 3, is an old associate who helps John reach the Elder. The Director, played by Anjelica Huston, leads the Ruska Roma and gives John passage to Casablanca in Chapter 3. Katia (Natalia Tena) leads the Ruska Roma family in Berlin in Chapter 4. Ares (Ruby Rose) appears in Chapter 2, the Adjudicator (Asia Kate Dillon) in Chapter 3, and Ms. Perkins (Adrianne Palicki) is billed sixth in the first film.

Eve, played by Ana de Armas, is the lead of Ballerina. She is raised in the Ruska Roma after a cult kills her father, trains as an assassin and spends years looking for those responsible, a hunt that takes her to Prague and then to Hallstatt, Austria. She meets Daniel Pine (Norman Reedus), a cult member trying to protect his daughter Ella, and the Director, Winston, Charon and John all appear in the film. Because it sits inside Chapter 3, the John Wick timeline shows where it fits.

The films never publish a power ranking, so any answer here is opinion. By authority, the High Table is the strongest force, and the Elder sits above it. In a fight, I would say John and Caine are the pair the films treat as equals, since Chapter 4 builds its Paris finale around their history. Perhaps the sturdiest answer is that the series rewards the people with the best allies, which is why Winston and the Continental keep coming back.
