Predator Creature: The Yautja Explained

The predator creature is the Yautja, an alien species of trophy hunters that first appeared in Predator (1987) and has appeared in nine films in total, from a Central American jungle to the planet Genna. Kevin Peter Hall wore the suit in the first two films, and Predator: Badlands (2025) finally made a Yautja named Dek the lead.

What Is the Predator Creature in the Films?

The Yautja are an alien species of hunters, billed as the Predator in nearly every credit, who travel to other worlds to kill dangerous prey and keep trophies. In predator badlands, Dek is introduced as a young Yautja, while the earlier films credit the creature simply as Predator or The Predator. In predator 1987, directed by John McTiernan, the creature hunts a mercenary team in a Central American jungle. It can turn nearly invisible, it sees heat, it keeps the skulls of its victims, and it carries a self destruct device.

Are there different types of predators? The films show several. Predators 2010, directed by Nimród Antal, credits a Tracker Predator, a Berserker Predator, a Falconer Predator and a Classic Predator, and its story describes the three larger hunters as feuding with a smaller clan. Alien vs predator 2004, directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, gives us Scar, the last surviving Predator at the Antarctic pyramid. The predator 2018, directed by Shane Black, adds a second, much larger Predator that kills the first. Predator killer of killers, directed by Dan Trachtenberg, credits a Warlord Predator, the Grendel King.

What about the predator creature design? Producer John Davis told Variety that the creature needed to be taller, and Kevin Peter Hall, billed third in the 1987 cast, played it in that film and again in predator 2. Peter Cullen supplied an uncredited voice in 1987. Ian Whyte played Scar and later the veteran hunter in avp requiem. In Predators, Derek Mears, Carey Jones and Brian Steele split the Classic, Tracker, Berserker and Falconer roles, and Brian A. Prince took the part in 2018. In prey predator, Dane DiLiegro stood 6 ft 9 as the Predator, and Trachtenberg aimed for a more feral creature, shot mostly in natural light and torchlight.

The names in the credits, across every film, are: Predator, The Predator, Classic Predator, Tracker Predator, Berserker Predator, Falconer Predator, Warlord Predator, and the helicopter pilot role that Hall also played in 1987. If you want the species as a subject in its own right, continue to the yautja page, and the full cast is on predator cast.

Predator Creature Story Arc Across Nine FilmsSpoilers

The Yautja story arc runs from a lone hunter in 1987 to a species with its own clans, rivals and internal politics by 2025. In Predator (1987), the creature picks off Dutch Schaefer's team one by one, loses its cloak when Dutch wounds it, removes its mask and fights him hand to hand. It dies under a log trap and sets off its self destruct device, and Dutch gets clear of the blast.

In Predator 2, the hunter moves to Los Angeles during the 1997 heat wave and targets gang members and police. It spares Leona Cantrell after its scanners show she is pregnant, then loses to Mike Harrigan inside its own ship. Cloaked Predators collect the body, and their leader gives Harrigan an antique flintlock pistol engraved "Raphael Adolini 1715".

The crossover films treat the species differently. In AVP: Alien vs. Predator, Predators use the Bouvet Island pyramid as a coming of age hunt, with humans as hosts for the prey. Scar teams up with Alexa Woods, destroys the pyramid with his wrist bomb and is mortally wounded by the Queen. In Aliens vs Predator: Requiem, a veteran Predator arrives in Gunnison, Colorado to clean up a hybrid outbreak, and he dies alongside the hybrid when the military drops a nuclear bomb on the town.

Predators moves the hunt to a game preserve planet. Tracker, Berserker and Falconer hunt a group of killers dropped there, and Royce and Isabelle kill Berserker at the end. The Predator (2018) shows a hunter crashing on Earth, a larger Predator that kills it, and a Predator killer exo suit that Quinn McKenna agrees to wear.

The arc then goes back in time. Prey sets a hunter against Naru in 1719, and Predator: Killer of Killers spreads three hunts across 841, 1609 Japan and 1942, ending on a Predator ship with a warlord who forces captured fighters into an arena. Predator: Badlands finishes the turn by making Dek the protagonist, a runt sent to Genna to hunt the Kalisk. He breaks with the clan code, beats his father on Yautja Prime and forms his own clan. How Do Yautja See Humans, and Who Do They Bond With?

Yautja see humans mainly as prey, and in several films as hosts or trophies, but a handful of individuals form real bonds. The 1987 creature tracks heat, which is why dutch predator survives by covering himself in mud. In Predator 2 the scanners read that Cantrell is pregnant and the hunter lets her go. In AVP the elder marks Alexa Woods's face and gives her a spear, honoring a human who fought beside Scar.

Has a Yautja ever loved a human? No film in the series shows romantic love. The closest bonds are Scar and alexa woods avp, who fight the Queen together, and Dek and Thia, a Weyland-Yutani synthetic, whose partnership becomes a family of sorts with the young Kalisk Bud. Thia is a synthetic rather than a human, so it is a bond across species, not a human one.

How do Yautja have human DNA? None of the films shows a Yautja with human DNA. The only hybrid on screen is the creature born from a Predator and an Alien, which appears at the end of AVP and drives the story of Requiem.

Other relationships are rivalries. In Predators, the larger Predators feud with a smaller clan and keep one captive. In Killer of Killers, the Grendel King forces human fighters into an arena. In Badlands, Dek's father casts him out, and a closing scene shows the old clan preparing to attack as a ship appears on the horizon, which Dek says carries his mother. Humans who face a Yautja on screen include harrigan predator 2, royce predators, naru prey and quinn mckenna predator, and the full list is under predator characters.

What Happens to the Yautja in the End?Spoilers

Individual Yautja almost always die, but the species survives every time. The 1987 hunter dies in the jungle, Predator 2's hunter dies in its own ship, Scar dies at the pyramid, and the Requiem hunter dies in the nuclear blast. Berserker dies in Predators, the large Predator dies in 2018, and Naru kills the hunter in Prey. In Killer of Killers, the Warlord is turned on by the captives, and in Badlands, Bud kills Dek's father.

The species itself is left standing. Other Predators collect their dead in Predator 2, arrive on the ice in AVP, and in Badlands the old clan is preparing to attack as Dek says his mother is arriving. As of November 3, 2026, no film after Badlands has a date or an official announcement. ComicBook.com reported in February 2026 that Trachtenberg was still working out next steps, so any new predator movie remains unconfirmed.

The overall status is open. The Yautja remain active hunters across the franchise, and at the end of Badlands Dek, Thia and Bud form their own clan, which is highly unusual for Yautja.

Best Yautja Moments: A Fan's Picks

In my opinion, the best Yautja scene is still the 1987 creature removing its mask to fight Dutch, because it turns a monster into an opponent with rules. It could be argued that the next best is the Predator 2 subway, where the hunter reads Cantrell's scanner and walks away. That single choice tells us more about the species than any amount of dialogue.

I also rate Hanzo's sword duel with Falconer in Predators, a rare fight where the hunter meets a human on its own terms. Perhaps the cleverest design moment is Prey, where Naru turns the creature's own mask and weapon against it in the bog, a fair payoff for a hunter that spent the film cloaked. And, in Badlands, Dek's choice to leave the clan code for Thia and Bud is the biggest change the species has had on screen.
