Finnick Odair in The Hunger Games: Actor, Films and Story
Finnick Odair is a past Hunger Games victor played by Sam Claflin in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (2014) and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 (2015). He is not in the leading cast of The Hunger Games (2012) or of the prequel, so his whole story sits inside the last three main films.
Who Plays Finnick Odair?
Who Is Finnick Odair in The Hunger Games?
Finnick Odair is a former Hunger Games victor who first appears in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, directed by Francis Lawrence and released in the US on November 22, 2013. Sam Claflin plays him in all three of his films, billed 13th in Catching Fire and 12th in both Mockingjay films.
He arrives at the point where the series changes shape. President Snow announces the 75th Hunger Games as a Quarter Quell, with tributes drawn from the pool of past victors, which is how a celebrated winner ends up in the same arena as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. That is the answer to why a character who arrives this late matters so much: the story needed victors, and he is one of them.
He is not in the leading cast of The Hunger Games (2012), nor of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, a prequel set more than sixty years before the original Games. For the wider ensemble, see the Hunger Games characters index and the Hunger Games cast list.

Finnick Odair's Story Across the Hunger Games MoviesSpoilers
Finnick's story runs from the Quarter Quell arena in Catching Fire to the Capitol sewers in Mockingjay Part 2, and across those films he moves from a fellow victor in the arena to a member of the rebel unit.
In Catching Fire, he and Mags join Katniss and Peeta once the Games begin. When mutated mandrills attack, the District 6 victor is killed shielding Peeta, and Mags gives up her life so that Finnick can save Peeta. The group later meets Beetee, Wiress and Johanna, and Wiress is killed in an ambush by the Career tributes. Beetee plans to electrocute the remaining Careers with a wire run to a tree that lightning strikes. Katniss instead fires an arrow trailing the wire into the arena's roof, the force field breaks, and a hovercraft collects her. She wakes beside Haymitch, Finnick, Beetee and Plutarch Heavensbee, and learns they are bound for District 13.
In Mockingjay Part 1 (2014), the story moves to District 13, where the rebels have built a society underground and President Coin and Plutarch want Katniss as the symbol of the uprising. A rescue team later pulls Peeta and other captured victors out of the Capitol.
In Mockingjay Part 2 (2015), Finnick is placed in a small unit with Katniss, Gale and Peeta, led by Boggs. They head for the Capitol using a holographic map of hidden booby traps, and the route takes them through the sewers.
Finnick's Allies: Mags, Katniss, Peeta and the Victors
Finnick's closest tie in the films is to Mags, and his other bonds form around the shared goal of getting Katniss and Peeta through the arena and then the war.
Mags Flanagan, played by Lynn Cohen, teams up with Katniss and Peeta in the Quarter Quell arena alongside him. She gives up her life so he can save Peeta, and in my opinion that sacrifice is the reason his protection of Peeta carries weight in the later films. His link to Katniss Everdeen is a working alliance: they fight on the same side in the arena, wake together in the hovercraft, and end up in the same unit in Mockingjay Part 2. Peeta Mellark is the person Finnick saves in the arena, and in Part 2 he is among the squad when Peeta relapses and attacks Katniss.
Among the other victors, Beetee Latier and Johanna Mason join the arena group, and Haymitch Abernathy and Plutarch Heavensbee are with Finnick when the hovercraft reaches safety. Gale Hawthorne is the fourth member of Katniss's unit in the Capitol push. Read more on Katniss Everdeen, Peeta Mellark, Gale Hawthorne and Haymitch.
How Does Finnick Odair Die?Spoilers
Finnick dies in Mockingjay Part 2, killed by mutant creatures in the Capitol sewers.
The unit has already lost Boggs to a trap and two of its members, the Leeg sisters, to Peacekeepers. In the sewers, the creatures attack and kill Finnick and others, and Katniss destroys them with an explosion. He therefore does not live to see the rebels win. Snow is killed by the mob at his execution after Katniss shoots Coin instead, and Plutarch's letter promises an end to the Hunger Games. The film closes years later with Katniss and Peeta married with two children, but Finnick is among those who did not survive the war.
Finnick's Best Moments: A Ranked Opinion
In my opinion, Finnick's best moment is the arena sequence in Catching Fire where the District 6 victor is killed shielding Peeta from the mutated mandrills and Mags gives up her life so that Finnick can save him. It shows the cost of that choice and puts Finnick's actions at the center of it. It could be argued that the sequence does more to establish him than any introduction, since the film trusts what he does to explain who he is.
Second, I would pick the hovercraft waking scene. Katniss wakes with Haymitch, Finnick, Beetee and Plutarch, learns the arena's destruction was a planned rescue, and attacks Haymitch in anger. Paradoxically, a scene built around her anger is also where the rebellion's survivors are first gathered in one place, and Finnick is among them.
Third comes the sewer descent in Mockingjay Part 2. Compared with the tar flood and the Leeg sisters' stand, it is perhaps the film's most closed in set piece, and Finnick's death there gives it weight beyond the creature design. That being said, Mockingjay Part 1 puts him less in the foreground, so his reputation rests mostly on Catching Fire and the last stretch of Part 2. If you are new to the series and want to see why people care about him, start with Catching Fire, and use hunger games movies in order to plan the rest.

FAQs
What Hunger Games movies is Finnick in?
Finnick Odair appears in three of the main films: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (2014) and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 (2015). He is not in the leading cast of The Hunger Games (2012) or of the prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023).
What happens to Annie after Finnick dies?
Annie Cresta, the District 4 character linked to Finnick in Suzanne Collins's books, is not among the top billed cast of Catching Fire or either Mockingjay film, and the film plots do not follow her after Finnick is killed in the Capitol sewers in Mockingjay Part 2. The films do not give her an on screen aftermath.
Did Katniss ever like Finnick?
In the films, Katniss and Finnick are allies and not a romantic pair. They fight on the same side in the Quarter Quell arena, wake together in the hovercraft with Haymitch, Beetee and Plutarch, and serve in the same unit in Mockingjay Part 2, which is also where Finnick is killed.
Why did Mags kiss Finnick before she died?
The plot of Catching Fire records that Mags gives up her life in the Quarter Quell arena so that Finnick can save Peeta. Lynn Cohen plays Mags Flanagan. The plot does not state a reason for any kiss, so the sacrifice itself is the only motive the films confirm.
Who played Finnick Odair?
Sam Claflin plays Finnick Odair in all three of his films. He is billed 13th in Catching Fire and 12th in both Mockingjay Part 1 and Mockingjay Part 2.
