Who Is Ardeth Bay in The Mummy?

Ardeth Bay is a Medjai warrior who has spent his life guarding against the return of the mummy Imhotep. He is played by Oded Fehr, who is billed sixth in The Mummy (1999), directed by Stephen Sommers, and fourth in The Mummy Returns (2001), also directed by Sommers.

In the 1999 film his purpose is clear once Imhotep wakes: he has trained for exactly this night, and he joins Rick O'Connell and Jonathan Carnahan as they race back to Hamunaptra to stop it.

If you are comparing him with the original film, the 1932 Universal Mummy has a similar sounding name. Imhotep passes himself off as a man called Ardath Bey, and Boris Karloff is credited as "Imhotep / Ardath Bey". That is the creature in disguise, a different character from the Medjai warrior of 1999.

Ardeth Bay does not appear in the top billed cast of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), so his screen time sits in the first two films of the saga. For the rest of the ensemble, see the Mummy characters list.

Ardeth Bay's Story Arc Across the FilmsSpoilers

Ardeth Bay stands against Imhotep's return in both films, first beside Rick O'Connell in 1999 and then in the chase for Alex in 2001. In 1999, Imhotep regenerates by draining life from the people he kills and brings the plagues of Egypt down on the land. He captures Evelyn Carnahan because he needs her as a sacrifice to bring Anck-su-namun back to life. Ardeth Bay, Rick and Jonathan then race back to Hamunaptra to stop him.

The fight at Hamunaptra is where his role is clearest. Rick and his allies battle through Imhotep's servants and rescue Evelyn at the last moment. Evelyn reads from the second book to take away Imhotep's immortality, and Rick drives a blade into him. As Hamunaptra collapses and the survivors flee, Ardeth Bay lets them go and wishes them well.

In The Mummy Returns, set in 1933, a cult resurrects Imhotep, and Alex O'Connell, who has put on a golden bracelet linked to the Scorpion King, is taken and forced to lead the cult to the oasis of Ahm Shere. Ardeth Bay chases them with Rick, Evelyn and Jonathan, helped by the pilot Izzy and his airship.

Ardeth Bay's Allies and Enemies

Ardeth Bay's closest ties are to the O'Connell family, and his oldest enemy is Imhotep. He has spent his life guarding against Imhotep's return, so his fight with the mummy is a duty more than a grudge.

With Rick O'Connell, he races back to Hamunaptra in 1999 to stop Imhotep, and the two fight through the mummy's servants on the same side. Jonathan makes the same run, and Evelyn is the captive they set out to save. In the second film, Rick, Evelyn and Jonathan chase the cult alongside him, and Alex O'Connell is the reason for the chase, so Ardeth Bay is one of four adults who set out to bring the boy back.

On the other side, he opposes Imhotep in both films. Anck-su-namun, Imhotep's lost love, returns in the second film reborn as the cultist Meela. The cult led by Baltus Hafez, which wants to use Imhotep to wake the Scorpion King and control his army, is the other force he is up against. What Happens to Ardeth Bay?Spoilers

Ardeth Bay survives The Mummy (1999). The film ends with Imhotep dissolving, Hamunaptra collapsing and Ardeth Bay letting the survivors leave with his good wishes, while the heroes ride off across the sands with a bit of treasure.

The ending of The Mummy Returns centers on the O'Connell family. The Scorpion King is killed with the spear and his army is pulled back to the underworld, Imhotep falls away as the oasis collapses, and Anck-Su-Namun is killed by scorpions. Izzy then rescues the O'Connells and Jonathan in the repaired airship. That closing sequence does not mention Ardeth Bay, so his fate at the end of that film is not stated.

He is not in the top billed cast of the 2008 film either. Whether he comes back is a question for the next film, covered at the end of the best moments section and on the Mummy 4 page.

Ardeth Bay's Best Moments (Opinion)

In my opinion, Ardeth Bay is at his best in the first film's last stretch, when the stakes are clearest. A Medjai who has spent a lifetime guarding against this one night finally gets to fight it, and that gives the Hamunaptra set piece a purpose beyond spectacle. Jerry Goldsmith's score backs the scale, while the character supplies the reason it matters.

His quiet farewell at the end of 1999 is the other moment I would keep. Letting the survivors go with a few words says more about the order than any speech about duty, and it also sets up why he is so easy to welcome back in the sequel.

It could be argued that his role in The Mummy Returns is the more crowded one, because the airship chase, the pygmy mummies and the Scorpion King all compete for screen time. That being said, he is in the chase alongside the family, and that is a good use of an ensemble character. If you want to follow his two appearances in order, the Mummy movies in order page gives the sequence.

On the next film: Variety reported that The Mummy 4, titled The Mummy: Book of the Dead, moved to October 15, 2027, with Radio Silence directing and Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz returning. The reporting so far does not name Oded Fehr or Ardeth Bay, so any return is, for now, a hope rather than a fact.
