The Mummy 1932 Plot: How the Story Starts

The Mummy 1932 opens in 1921, when a British archaeological expedition in Egypt digs up the mummy of Imhotep, a high priest who was buried alive for a sacrilege. The team, led by Sir Joseph Whemple, finds the body together with a sealed casket holding the Scroll of Thoth, and the warnings that come with it are not subtle.

The young assistant Ralph Norton ignores them anyway. He reads the scroll aloud, which brings Imhotep back to life, and Ralph goes mad at the sight of it. The mummy then walks out with the scroll, leaving the expedition with a ruined colleague and a missing relic (a bad afternoon by any standard). That is the full setup, and everything after it is covered in the next section with spoilers flagged.

What Music Is in The Mummy (1932)? Soundtrack and Score

James Dietrich composed the score for The Mummy (1932), and no soundtrack album is credited to the film, so there is no album title, label or release date to give. The featured music is "Swan Lake (Scene, Act II)" by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and it plays over the opening credits.

Universal used the same arrangement of that piece for Dracula in 1931, so the two horror films open on identical music. For a viewer arriving straight from Dracula, it is a little like hearing the same theme tune at the start of a new episode of a favorite series, because the studio gives the audience a familiar opening before the first scene has played.

Two names cover the music of the film. Dietrich holds the score credit, while Tchaikovsky is the composer of the Swan Lake excerpt that accompanies the titles. No other songs are credited to the film, so the score and that single piece make up everything that can be said about its music.

  • "Swan Lake (Scene, Act II)" by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

The Mummy 1932 Full Plot SummarySpoilers

The 1932 story runs from a mad assistant in 1921 to a ritual in a temple a decade later, and it ends with Imhotep reduced to dust. Spoilers follow.

Ten years after the first dig, Frank Whemple, son of Sir Joseph, is on a fresh expedition when a stranger calling himself Ardath Bey turns up with directions. Ardath Bey is Imhotep, and he steers the team to the lost tomb of Princess Anck-es-en-Amon. Her treasures are crated and sent to the Cairo museum, which is exactly where he wants them.

His real target is Helen Grosvenor, a young woman of mixed Egyptian descent. Imhotep is convinced she is the princess reborn, and he pulls her toward him step by step. The plan is grim: kill her, wrap her as a mummy and raise her, so that the two can live forever. Frank and Dr. Muller set out to protect her, with Muller drawing on his own knowledge of Egyptian magic to hold Imhotep back.

It is not enough. Imhotep seizes Helen and begins the rite at the temple. As memories of her earlier life surface, she calls on the goddess Isis. The statue lifts its arm, a surge of power wrecks the scroll, and Imhotep crumbles to dust. Helen wakes as herself, and Frank is at her side.

The Mummy 1932 Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of The Mummy 1932 means Imhotep is finished because the Scroll of Thoth, the source of his second life, is burned by the power of Isis. Spoilers follow.

Here is the sequence. Helen, with her past life stirring, prays to Isis at the moment Imhotep is about to complete his ritual. The statue raises its arm, a burst of power destroys the scroll, and Imhotep decays into dust. Helen wakes as herself and is reunited with Frank, and the film closes with the curse broken and the couple safe.

Why does it work? We think the finale is smart because it answers the film's opening. The scroll that Ralph Norton reads aloud in 1921 is the same object that ends the threat, so the story closes its own loop in a compact 73 minutes. We would argue that the supernatural rescue arrives with little warning, since the film spends most of its time on Imhotep's patient menace rather than on a fight. Perhaps that is the point: this monster is a quiet planner, not a brawler, and the creature design leans on stillness and make-up rather than action.

Compare that with The Mummy (1999), where Imhotep is cursed to a living death after a forbidden affair. The 1932 version spends its budget of dread on one resurrected priest and one ritual. The long flashback showing Anck-es-en-Amon's earlier reincarnations was cut, and only stills survive, so the film never shows the lives that Helen half remembers. The ending asks the audience to accept the reincarnation on trust.

The Mummy 1932 Filming Dates and Locations

Filming of The Mummy (1932) began in September 1932 on a three week schedule, which is a tight window for a film with a make-up design this demanding. Boris Karloff's first day covered the mummy's awakening from the sarcophagus.

The story is set in Egypt in 1921 and again ten years later, and the Cairo museum plays a part in the plot. No shooting locations have been published for the film, so the real sites behind any scene remain unknown.
