Toy Story (1995), directed by John Lasseter, was the first fully computer animated feature film, and it earned about $401 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. Box Office Mojo lists that figure as a lifetime gross, which includes later re-releases. Toy Story 2 (1999), also directed by Lasseter, topped the first film's total with $497 million on a $90 million budget.
Which Toy Story movies broke $1 billion? Three of them did. Toy Story 3, directed by Lee Unkrich, reached $1.07 billion, Toy Story 4, directed by Josh Cooley, reached $1.07 billion, and Toy Story 5 reached $1.15 billion. Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 finished within 1 percent of each other worldwide, which is a remarkably tight pair for films made nine years apart.
What movie made $2 billion at the box office in this franchise? None did. No single Toy Story title has come close to $2 billion, the best result is $1.15 billion for Toy Story 5, and the series total for the five main films is about $4.19 billion. Across those five films, the domestic market contributed about $1.81 billion and international markets about $2.38 billion.
How many Toy Story films will they make? Five main films and one spinoff are out, and no release date or official greenlight for Toy Story 6 has been published, so nothing can be added to the totals yet. What the Toy Story Franchise Box Office Numbers Tell Us
In my opinion, the numbers show a franchise that found its ceiling near $1 billion with Toy Story 3 and has stayed there ever since. Toy Story 3 made $1.07 billion, Toy Story 4 made $1.07 billion and Toy Story 5 made $1.15 billion, so the last three main films have moved by less than 8 percent from top to bottom. That steadiness is rare for a saga that began in 1995, and it could be argued that it matters more than any single record.
Is Toy Story 1 a success? By any measure, yes. A $401 million worldwide total on a $30 million budget is more than 13 times the cost, which is a better return than any later film in the series. Toy Story 2 returned about five and a half times its $90 million budget, and it began life as a direct to video project before Pixar moved it to theaters in 1998, according to Animation World Network. That is a very good result for a sequel that was not meant for theaters at first.
The cost side tells a different story. Budgets rose from $30 million to $250 million for Toy Story 5, so the multiple on cost has slipped from about 13 times to about 4.6 times. Toy Story 5 still earned the most, but it also cost the most: its budget rose from $200 million for Toy Story 4 to $250 million, while its worldwide gross rose from $1.07 billion to $1.15 billion.
Lightyear is the cautionary comparison. It earned $226 million worldwide on a $200 million budget, while Toy Story 2 earned $497 million on a $90 million budget, more than double the gross for less than half the spend. Perhaps the reason is that audiences came for Woody and the toy room, and Lightyear is a space adventure with Buzz and a Star Command crew rather than a toy adventure. That is my reading, and the figures alone cannot prove it.
The audience has also shifted overseas. International markets produced about 43 percent of Toy Story (1995) and about 51 percent of Toy Story 2, but about 61 percent of Toy Story 3 and 58 percent of Toy Story 5. If you are tracking where the next film might land, the international line is the one to watch, and the news on Toy Story 6 is the place to look for any change.
