The Five Main Toy Story Movies

Toy Story 1995, directed by John Lasseter, opened on November 22, 1995, and Disney's D23 archive describes it as the first feature film made entirely with computer animation. Lasseter received a special Academy Award for it. Tom Hanks voices the cowboy doll Woody and Tim Allen voices Buzz Lightyear, a space ranger action figure who believes he is a real hero. The film ran 81 minutes on a $30 million budget and earned about $401 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, a total that includes re-releases.

Toy Story 2 (1999), also directed by Lasseter, sends the toys after Woody when the collector Al McWhiggin steals him from a yard sale. Joan Cusack joins as Jessie and Kelsey Grammer as the Prospector. The sequel began life as a direct to video project before it was announced as a theatrical release in 1998. It cost $90 million and earned about $497 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.

Toy Story 3 (2010), directed by Lee Unkrich, finds Andy at 17 and heading to college while his toys wonder what happens next. A mix-up with a garbage bag lands them in a donation box bound for Sunnyside Daycare, where Ned Beatty voices Lotso and Michael Keaton voices Ken. At 103 minutes it is the longest of the first four films, and it crossed $1 billion, finishing at about $1.07 billion worldwide on a $200 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo.

Toy Story 4 (2019), directed by Josh Cooley, moves the toys to a new owner, Bonnie, who builds Forky from a spork and craft supplies. Tony Hale voices Forky, Annie Potts returns as Bo Peep, and Keanu Reeves voices Duke Caboom. It earned about $1.07 billion worldwide on a $200 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo.

Toy Story 5 (2026), directed by Andrew Stanton, is the newest main film. It follows Bonnie's toys after Lilypad, a frog shaped tablet voiced by Greta Lee, becomes her favorite thing, and Jessie sets out to win her back. Randy Newman returned as composer, and Taylor Swift sings "I Knew It, I Knew You". The film earned about $1.15 billion worldwide on a $250 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo and The Numbers.

Lightyear: The Spin-Off

Lightyear (2022), directed by Angus MacLane, is the only Toy Story spin-off released in theaters. Chris Evans voices Buzz Lightyear, with Keke Palmer as Izzy Hawthorne, Peter Sohn as SOX and James Brolin as Zurg. Michael Giacchino composed the score, and Disney has said Pixar's team made a research trip to NASA Johnson Space Center and consulted five NASA astronaut advisors. It is a science fiction adventure about a crew stranded on the planet T'Kani Prime, and it earned about $226 million worldwide on a $200 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. It tells Buzz's story without the toys, so the main saga can be followed without it.

How the Six Films Compare

The six films differ most in scale and in who held the director's chair. Lasseter directed the first two, then Lee Unkrich, Josh Cooley and Andrew Stanton took one main film each, and Angus MacLane made the spin-off. Budgets climbed from $30 million for Toy Story (1995) to $90 million for Toy Story 2, then $200 million for Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4, and $250 million for Toy Story 5. Grosses followed for the main films: about $401 million, $497 million, $1.07 billion, $1.07 billion and $1.15 billion worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.

In my opinion, Toy Story 2 is the most interesting entry on that list, because a sequel that started as a direct to video project, according to Animation World Network, ended up opening on November 24, 1999 and more than doubling the budget of the first film into a theatrical event. Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 finishing within a few million dollars of each other at the $1.07 billion mark is a tidy coincidence, and it suggests audiences came back for Woody and Buzz whichever director was in charge.

Lightyear is the outlier. It is the only film here that earned less worldwide ($226 million) than its $200 million budget suggests a studio would want, and it is the only one without Tom Hanks and Tim Allen. In my opinion, that makes it the film to pick for an older child who likes space adventures, while younger viewers who want the toys will be happier with the main saga.
