Iduna Frozen: Who Queen Iduna Is and Who Voices Her

Iduna in Frozen is Queen Iduna of Arendelle, the mother of Elsa and Anna and the wife of King Agnarr, and Evan Rachel Wood voices her in Frozen II (2019). She is the quiet center of the sequel's mystery, because the truth about her family is what Elsa and Anna travel north to find.

Who Is Queen Iduna in Frozen?

Queen Iduna is the queen of Arendelle, the wife of King Agnarr and the mother of Elsa and Anna. Evan Rachel Wood voices her in Frozen II (2019), directed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, where the credits list her as "Iduna (voice)". Wood is billed fourth in the cast, behind Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel and Josh Gad. King Agnarr is voiced by Alfred Molina.

If you are searching for the mother in the first film, the picture is simpler. In Frozen (2013), the king and queen shut the castle gates to keep their daughters apart after Elsa's ice blast hits Anna, and they are later lost in a shipwreck. The sequel is the film that gives the queen a name, a voice and a history. Frozen II carries a PG rating in the US and in Australia, and a U in the UK.

You can find her alongside the rest of the Frozen characters, and the full voice list sits on the Frozen cast page.

Queen Iduna's Story Arc in Frozen IISpoilers

Queen Iduna's arc in Frozen II runs through the sisters' search rather than through scenes of her own, and the biggest reveal about her arrives in the middle of the film. The story opens with a bedtime tale from the girls' father about a battle in an enchanted forest, a battle that left the woods sealed behind mist. When Elsa later follows an unexplained voice and rouses the elemental spirits, Arendelle is emptied and the family heads north to find out why.

The forest holds two groups that have been stuck facing each other for years: the Northuldra people and a group of Arendelle soldiers. After the wind spirit shows Elsa memories of her father's past, the sisters put the pieces together. Their mother, Iduna, was Northuldra, and she had once rescued the man who became their father. For anyone who only knew the closed gates and the shipwreck from Frozen (2013), that is a real change of picture: the queen had a homeland, and it was the place the family had been avoiding.

The film then widens the question. At Ahtohallan, Elsa learns that her grandfather had a dam built to weaken the Northuldra and that he killed their leader. Anna chooses to bring the dam down by waking the earth giants, and the resulting flood is stopped by Elsa before it reaches the kingdom. Once the mist lifts, the wrong done to Iduna's people is finally answered. In my opinion, that makes her the emotional reason for the whole journey, even with little screen time. The Frozen timeline shows where this sequence falls after the first film.

Iduna's Family: Agnarr, Elsa, Anna and the Northuldra

Iduna's closest ties are to King Agnarr, to her daughters, and to the Northuldra people she came from. Agnarr is the man she once saved, and he is also the father who tells the young sisters about the enchanted forest. The sequel treats the story of the two of them as the key to the whole conflict.

Her daughters carry different halves of that history. Elsa has the ice magic that the first film explored through her powers, and she ends the sequel as the fifth spirit, the bridge between people and nature. Anna takes the crown of Arendelle, so the kingdom now has a queen whose mother came from the Northuldra. In my opinion, that is the neatest way the film honors Iduna: the two sides of her story are split between her children.

The Northuldra are her people, and the sisters meet them in the Enchanted Forest alongside the soldiers of Arendelle. The wrong in the family past is the dam, which Elsa's grandfather built against the Northuldra.

What Happened to Queen Iduna? Her Fate ExplainedSpoilers

Frozen (2013) establishes that Elsa and Anna's parents are lost at sea in a shipwreck, which leaves the sisters alone in the closed castle. Frozen II names their mother as Iduna and tells where she came from, so the sequel is where her story is filled in.

The Northuldra's story is resolved by her daughters. Elsa chooses to live in the forest as protector, Anna becomes queen of Arendelle, and the two sisters stay close.

As for what comes next, Frozen III is dated for November 24, 2027, according to TheWrap. For the order of every film, see Frozen movies in order.

Best Moments for Queen Iduna

In my opinion, Iduna's best moment is musical: "Show Yourself", performed by Idina Menzel and Evan Rachel Wood, because it puts Elsa's voice and Iduna's voice in the same song. You can find the other tracks on the Frozen soundtrack page.

A second moment is the reveal that she came from the Northuldra and saved Agnarr. It works because it reframes a mother the first film only mentioned in passing. Compared with the first film, where the parents are mostly a closed gate and a shipwreck, the sequel treats them as people with choices.

A third is the quieter payoff at the end, when Anna wears the crown and Elsa takes her place in the forest. Neither daughter had to give up one half of Iduna's inheritance to honor the other. That being said, Iduna is a supporting figure rather than a lead, and the sisters, Olaf and Kristoff still carry most of the screen time.
