Sven in Frozen: Kristoff's Reindeer, Voice and Story

Sven is a reindeer, and he belongs to Kristoff, the ice deliverer who helps Anna find her sister Elsa in Frozen (2013). He first appears in that film, directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, and he returns in Frozen Fever (2015), Olaf's Frozen Adventure (2017) and Frozen II (2019), directed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck.

Who voices Sven? The credits for Frozen II list Jonathan Groff for "Kristoff / Sven / Reindeers", so the actor behind Kristoff is also credited for the reindeer in that film. The cast lists for the first film and the two shorts credit Groff for Kristoff alone, so Frozen II is the only film where Sven is named in a credit. If you want the full ensemble, the Frozen cast page lists everyone.

Kristoff is an ice deliverer who works with a reindeer and a sleigh, and in Frozen (2013) Sven is one of the friends who set out with Anna to find Elsa. To read about his partner, see kristoff, and for the wider ensemble visit the Frozen characters page.

Sven's closest bond is with Kristoff, and the other friendships in the series run through that pairing. Sven is Kristoff's reindeer, and in Frozen (2013) the two of them head up the mountain with Anna and Olaf. At the end of that film Kristoff becomes the royal ice deliverer, and he shares a kiss with Anna.

Anna is the friend who brings the group together, since she is the one who goes after Elsa. By Frozen Fever she is the guest of honor at a party that Kristoff, Sven and Olaf help plan. Kristoff and Anna remain a couple through Frozen II, which keeps Sven close to the sisters. You can read more on anna frozen and elsa frozen.

Olaf is the friend who most often shares a scene with Sven. In Olaf's Frozen Adventure, Olaf borrows Sven and Kristoff's sleigh for his search, and in Frozen II, Olaf, Sven and Kristoff travel together to the forest. Olaf has his own profile at olaf. Sven also lives in the world shaped by hans frozen, whose plan in the first film is the reason Kristoff races Anna back to Arendelle.

In my opinion, Sven's best moments are the ones where he quietly keeps the friends moving. My first pick is the North Mountain journey in Frozen (2013), because it is where Kristoff and Sven meet up with Anna and Olaf, and the film leans on that group's chemistry as much as on the plot. It could be argued that the movie works as a road story because the reindeer gives the party a way to travel and a character to bounce jokes off.

My second pick is Olaf's Frozen Adventure. Olaf takes Kristoff's sleigh and Sven to gather traditions, and the sleigh later races down a mountainside and explodes, which makes for one of the funniest set pieces in the franchise. Perhaps the short gets less credit than it deserves because it ran in front of Coco, but in my view it is Sven's biggest job outside the main films.

My third pick is the trip to the Enchanted Forest in Frozen II. The group leaves Arendelle in a hurry, and it is a good reminder that Sven is part of the ensemble rather than scenery.
