Who Plays Kristoff / Sven / Reindeers (voice)?

Who Is Kristoff in Frozen?

Kristoff is a working ice deliverer, voiced by Jonathan Groff. He first appears in Frozen (2013), directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, where he joins Anna in her search for Elsa on the North Mountain. His companion is his reindeer, Sven, and the pair appear together in Frozen (2013), Frozen Fever, Olaf's Frozen Adventure and Frozen II.

The credits are consistent across the saga. Groff is listed as Kristoff (voice) in Frozen (2013), Frozen Fever and Olaf's Frozen Adventure, and the Frozen II (2019) credits list him for the role as well as for Sven and the reindeer. In the short Once Upon a Snowman, the credit reads Kristoff (voice) (archive sound).

What is his personality like? The films show him mostly through what he does for Anna. He joins her search for Elsa, and when the trolls tell him that only an act of true love can save her, he rushes her back to Hans for a kiss. In Frozen Fever he is among the friends who help with the secret birthday preparations.

What was his job in Frozen? He delivers ice, and at the end of Frozen (2013) he becomes the royal ice deliverer. That title ties him to Arendelle for the rest of the saga. If you want to see how he fits among the others, the Frozen characters page lists every main figure.

Kristoff's Story Arc Across the Frozen FilmsSpoilers

The ice deliverer's arc runs from a man who joins one search to a permanent part of the royal circle, and it plays out across both main films and the shorts. In Frozen (2013), Elsa flees to the North Mountain after losing control of her powers at her coronation and leaves Arendelle in endless winter. Anna goes after her with Kristoff, Sven and a living snowman named Olaf. At Elsa's ice palace, Elsa accidentally strikes Anna in the heart, and Anna begins to freeze. The trolls tell him that only an act of true love can save her, so he rushes her back to Prince Hans for a kiss.

Hans instead reveals that he wants the throne and leaves Anna to die. Anna's sacrifice for her sister is itself the act of true love that thaws her. Hans is sent home in disgrace, the ice deliverer becomes the royal ice deliverer, and he and Anna share a kiss.

The shorts keep him in the background but in the group. In Frozen Fever (2015), he helps Elsa, Sven and Olaf prepare a surprise party for Anna. In Olaf's Frozen Adventure (2017), Olaf borrows his sleigh and Sven to look for a holiday tradition, and the sleigh does not survive the trip. In Once Upon a Snowman (2020), the story is set before Olaf meets Anna and her companion, so his voice appears only as archive sound.

In Frozen II (2019), he travels with Elsa, Anna, Olaf and Sven to the Enchanted Forest, a place sealed off by a wall of mist. He is part of the search party while the sisters uncover the past, and the story brings him back to the center of Anna's life at its close.

Relationships: Anna, Sven, Olaf and Elsa

The ice deliverer's closest bonds are with Sven and Anna, and the rest of his circle forms around them. Does he love Anna or Elsa? The films answer that clearly: he loves Anna. They share a kiss at the end of Frozen (2013), and in Frozen II he proposes to her. With Elsa, the films show him traveling with her, Anna, Olaf and Sven to the Enchanted Forest in Frozen II, and helping her prepare Anna's party in Frozen Fever.

Sven is the constant. The reindeer is at his side from the first film through Olaf's Frozen Adventure, where Olaf takes both the sleigh and Sven to go looking for a tradition. In the Frozen II credits, Groff is listed for Sven and the reindeer as well as for the human lead.

Olaf is often a companion on the road. In Frozen (2013), Olaf joins the trip up the mountain alongside the pair. In Olaf's Frozen Adventure, Olaf borrows the sleigh and sets off on his own, which is an easy way to see how they get along.

The trolls matter to him, too. In Frozen (2013), they tell him that only an act of true love can save Anna, and in Frozen II the troll leader Grand Pabbie tells the sisters they must find out what happened in the past. The cast lists credit Ciarán Hinds as Pabbie in both films.

Hans is his opposite. The ice deliverer races Anna back for a kiss he believes will save her, and Hans turns out to have no interest in saving her at all.

What Happens to Kristoff at the End of Frozen II?Spoilers

He survives every film in the saga, and his last scene in Frozen II is his proposal to Anna. The ending of the second film has the dam destroyed, Arendelle saved from the flood by Elsa, the mist over the forest lifted and Olaf brought back to life. After that, he proposes to Anna. Elsa then hands the crown of Arendelle to Anna and takes up her place as protector of the Enchanted Forest, while the two sisters stay close.

That proposal is where his story stands as of the most recent film.

What comes next? Frozen III is in production, with Disney's US theatrical date set for November 24, 2027, according to TheWrap and Box Office Mojo. The date has moved once, from an earlier November 2026 slot, and it was announced as 2027 at D23 in August 2024. No report I have seen details his role, so anything about his storyline is speculation for now. You can follow the film's status on the Frozen 3 page and find the clips on the Frozen 3 trailer page.

The Best Moments for the Ice Deliverer Across the Frozen Films

In my opinion, his best moments are the ones where he does something simple and generous, and four stand out across the five titles.

The first is the race back to Arendelle in Frozen (2013). He drives Anna home because he believes a kiss from Hans will save her, which means he is delivering her to the person he thinks she loves. It could be argued that this is the most selfless thing he does in the saga, and it gives the later kiss with Anna more weight.

The second is the sleigh in Olaf's Frozen Adventure. The sleigh catches fire after a piece of coal from Oaken's sauna, races down a mountainside and explodes. The comedy comes from watching the tools of his trade go up in flames while Olaf carries on regardless.

The third is the secret planning in Frozen Fever. He is one of the helpers, along with Sven and Olaf, in Elsa's surprise for Anna, and it is a small reminder that he is part of the family by that point.

The fourth is the proposal in Frozen II. It is quiet next to the flood, the earth giants and the frozen Elsa, but, perhaps, that is why it works. If you are choosing a first film to meet him, Frozen (2013) is rated PG in the US, and Frozen II is also PG. The Frozen movies in order page shows where each fits.
