Jurassic World 2015 Plot: What Is the Movie About?

Jurassic World 2015 is about a fully open dinosaur theme park on Isla Nublar that builds a bigger, more dangerous attraction to keep visitors coming. The story takes place 22 years after the disaster at John Hammond's original park in Jurassic Park (1993), and this time the park is busy, profitable and full of tourists.

Teenage brothers Zach and Gray are sent to visit their aunt Claire, who runs the park and is far too busy to spend time with them. Elsewhere on Isla Nublar, Owen Grady, a former Navy animal behaviorist, trains a small pack of Velociraptors, which is a very different job from selling tickets. Park scientists have also created a new headline animal, a genetically engineered hybrid called the Indominus rex, and Claire asks Owen to check its enclosure for safety.

That inspection is where the trouble starts, and the rest of the film follows from what Owen finds in the paddock.

Jurassic World Soundtrack and Score

Michael Giacchino composed the score for Jurassic World (2015), and the album "Jurassic World: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" was released by Back Lot Music on June 9, 2015. It is a score album with 24 tracks, and Giacchino is the only composer credited on it.

That makes the music of Jurassic World (2015) a score driven affair. No featured songs are on record for the film, so there is no song list to run through and no needle drop to point to. Every credited piece of music belongs to Giacchino's score, which is the answer to the question most people searching for the songs in this film are really asking.

If you want the album itself, the key details are short:

  • Album: "Jurassic World: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack"
  • Composer: Michael Giacchino (score)
  • Label: Back Lot Music
  • Released: June 9, 2015
  • Tracks: 24

The album is the one place to hear the full run of Giacchino's work for the film in a single sitting, since the score is the only music credited to the film. For how the music of the other films in the saga compares, Cinvibe covers the full run of composers and albums on the jurassic park soundtrack page.

Jurassic World 2015 Plot Explained: Full SynopsisSpoilers

The Indominus rex escapes its paddock, takes control of the raptor pack and is only stopped when the old Tyrannosaurus rex and the park's Mosasaurus join the fight. Everything in between is a chain of bad decisions made by people who thought the animal could be managed.

The park's owner wants a fresh attraction to keep visitors coming, so the lab creates the Indominus rex and keeps it secret from most of the staff. Claire brings in Owen to assess the paddock, and he warns that the animal is dangerously intelligent. He is right: the Indominus tricks its handlers, breaks out and starts killing.

Meanwhile Zach and Gray leave the main area in a gyrosphere vehicle and end up directly in the path of the escaped animal. Park security chief Vic Hoskins sees the crisis as a chance to use Owen's raptors as military weapons. Owen and Claire head into the jungle to find the boys.

Then comes the twist that makes the animal far worse than a big predator. The Indominus reveals that it carries raptor DNA and takes control of the raptor pack, turning the trained animals against the humans. Claire's assistant Zara is killed in a pterosaur attack after the aviary is breached. The boys survive on their own and reach the abandoned original visitor center.

Hoskins's plan collapses and he is killed, while the park is evacuated. In the finale Claire frees the old Tyrannosaurus rex, which fights the Indominus with help from the raptor Blue. The park's Mosasaurus finally pulls the Indominus into the lagoon, and the survivors reunite.

Where Did Jurassic World 2015 Premiere?

Jurassic World 2015 premiered in Paris on May 29, 2015, two weeks before its US release. Reports disagree on the venue: one outlet places the premiere at Le Grand Rex, while a Reuters caption does not name a venue, so no venue is confirmed.

The theatrical rollout began even earlier abroad. Box Office Mojo lists June 10, 2015 as the earliest international release. Australia followed on June 11, and both the US and the UK got the film on June 12, 2015. The film is rated PG-13 in the US, 12A in the UK and M in Australia.

Jurassic World 2015 Ending Explained: Why the T. rex WinsSpoilers

The ending works because the Indominus rex is beaten by the oldest animal in the park, not by any new technology. In my opinion, that choice is the smartest thing the film does, because it turns a story about a lab making something bigger into a story about the original being enough.

Here is what happens. The Indominus is dragged underwater by the Mosasaurus and killed, the surviving visitors are evacuated, and the boys are reunited with their parents. Owen and Claire decide to stay together. The park is left empty again, with the Tyrannosaurus standing over the ruins as the film closes.

How does the T. rex get into the fight? Claire frees the old Tyrannosaurus rex from its enclosure, and it takes on the Indominus. It is a gamble, and I think it is the moment where Claire stops being the person who manages the park and becomes someone who acts in it. Blue, one of the raptors Owen trains, joins the fight against the Indominus after the hybrid had turned the rest of the pack against the humans. It could be argued that this gives Owen's bond with the raptors a payoff the film earned earlier in his training scenes.

The empty park is also a quiet echo of 1993. The boys shelter in the abandoned original visitor center, and the last shot returns to ruins, a reminder that the park keeps failing in the same way. The ending also sets up what follows: Claire later campaigns to protect the island's dinosaurs and Blue is the last raptor in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. This film's survivors carry straight into that story, and the full run is mapped on the jurassic park timeline.

Where Was Jurassic World 2015 Filmed?

Jurassic World 2015 was filmed in Hawaii and Louisiana, with the production planning about four weeks on Oahu, two weeks on Kauai and about 11 weeks in New Orleans. The Hawaii work started in April 2014, and the New Orleans portion began in June.

The New Orleans leg did most of the heavy lifting. The park's main street was built on the lot of the abandoned Six Flags New Orleans, and the interior sets were built at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility. Audubon Zoo in New Orleans was used for the opening dinosaur attack scenes.

If you are looking for Isla Nublar on a map, the shooting took place on Oahu, Kauai and in New Orleans. The island in the story has its own page: isla nublar.

Jurassic World 2015 Trivia and Production Facts

Jurassic World 2015 trivia centers on how the Indominus rex was designed and how smoothly the shoot ran.

  • Colin Trevorrow designed the Indominus rex himself, working with paleontologist Jack Horner and the film's model builders. Its body is based on a T. rex with traits from Giganotosaurus and Therizinosaurus.
  • Industrial Light & Magic handled roughly 1,000 visual effects shots from its San Francisco base, and the sound mix was done at Skywalker Ranch.
  • Trevorrow said the shoot finished ahead of schedule and under budget, with no reshoots.
  • The production announced it would shoot on both 35mm and 65mm film, with the 65mm footage meant for IMAX screens.
  • The park's main street was built on the lot of the abandoned Six Flags New Orleans, and interior sets were built at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility.
  • BD Wong returned as Dr. Henry Wu, his first appearance in the franchise since the 1993 original.

Box office is the other number people repeat. Box Office Mojo puts the budget at $150 million. Worldwide, Box Office Mojo and The Numbers give slightly different totals, and both round to about $1.67 billion.
