Jurassic Park Movies Ranked: Best to Worst

Jurassic Park movies ranked from best to worst puts Jurassic Park (1993), directed by Steven Spielberg, first of the seven main films in my ranking, with Jurassic World Dominion (2022) last. The full order is Jurassic Park (1993), Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), Jurassic World (2015), Jurassic Park III (2001), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022). It is opinion, so each film below gets a reason you can argue with.

Key Takeaways

  • Jurassic Park (1993) is the best Jurassic movie because its dinosaurs follow rules the film teaches you before it uses them.
  • Jurassic World Rebirth (2025) is the best of the Jurassic World era, ahead of Jurassic World (2015), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022).
  • The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) has the strongest idea of any sequel, the argument over documenting the animals or capturing them.
  • Jurassic World Dominion (2022) ranks last because it spreads a 147 minute runtime across too many story threads.
  • Box office does not decide this ranking: Jurassic World (2015) is the highest grossing film in the series and still sits fourth.

Hot Takes

  • Jurassic Park III (2001) is a better monster movie than Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) or Jurassic World Dominion (2022), and its 92 minute runtime is a strength. (Callan Brooks, opinion)
  • Jurassic World Rebirth (2025) belongs in second place, ahead of Jurassic World (2015), because it treats dinosaurs as animals in a place instead of weapons in a plot. (Callan Brooks, opinion)
  • Bringing back the original trio in Jurassic World Dominion (2022) was the right call, but the film spent them on a locust subplot. (Callan Brooks, opinion)

Opinion, by Callan Brooks.

  1. 1Jurassic Park (1993) theatrical poster

    Jurassic Park

Its dinosaurs follow rules the film teaches before it uses them, and a lawyer, three experts and two kids give the audience several ways to watch. Stan Winston's practical creatures and ILM's digital work still hold up. It also has the best return on cost in the series, $1.1 billion on $63 million.

  2. 2Jurassic World Rebirth (2025) theatrical poster

    Jurassic World Rebirth

A small crew on a mission to take genetic material from sea, land and air dinosaurs is the right size for a creature film. Gareth Edwards and composer Alexandre Desplat give it a different feel from the previous three. The mission is a little tidy, but the setting carries it.

  3. 3The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) theatrical poster

    The Lost World: Jurassic Park

The argument over documenting the animals or capturing them is the best idea any sequel has had. Jeff Goldblum as Ian Malcolm leads with dry humor. The crowded ensemble keeps it below the original.

  4. 4Jurassic World (2015) theatrical poster

    Jurassic World

The park sequences and the Indominus rex make it the most polished spectacle after the original. The hybrid behaves more like a movie monster than an animal, and the human story is thin. It is the highest grossing film in the series, but that does not move it up.

  5. 5Jurassic Park III (2001) theatrical poster

    Jurassic Park III

At 92 minutes it is the leanest monster movie in the series, with a Spinosaurus built as an animatronic. Production script problems show in places. It knows what it is, which puts it above the two films that follow.

  6. 6Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) theatrical poster

    Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

The volcano rescue on Isla Nublar is the best action of the World era. The film changes shape midway and the join shows. It earned $1.31 billion, so audiences were less bothered than I was.

  7. 7Jurassic World Dominion (2022) theatrical poster

    Jurassic World Dominion

At 147 minutes it is the longest film and spreads its story across a locust plot, a kidnapping and a returning legacy cast. Bringing back Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum was the right instinct, but the dinosaurs lose focus.

Jurassic Park Movies Ranked: How I Judge Each Film

I rank the seven main Jurassic films on four tests: how the dinosaurs behave on screen, how well the people carry the story, how the film earns its place in the saga, and how badly I want to watch it again. That is a personal scale, and I label every verdict below as opinion. If you disagree, the jurassic park box office figures and the jurassic park reviews index give you plenty to argue with me about.

What counts as a Jurassic Park movie for this list? The three Jurassic Park films, the three Jurassic World films and Jurassic World Rebirth (2025) are the main films, which makes seven, and the full count sits on how many jurassic park movies there are. Only those seven theatrical films are ranked, and for the wider story you can head to the hub at jurassic park movies and the jurassic park timeline.

Does box office decide the order? It does not, because money tells a separate story from the one on screen. Jurassic World (2015) earned $1.67 billion worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, which is the biggest total in the series, and I still place it fourth.

1. Jurassic Park (1993)

Jurassic Park (1993), directed by Steven Spielberg, is the best film in the series because every scare is set up by a rule the film has already taught you. Billionaire John Hammond invites paleontologist Alan Grant, paleobotanist Ellie Sattler and chaos theorist Ian Malcolm to approve his island park, and a lawyer plus Hammond's two grandchildren join the tour. In my opinion, that mix of an expert, a skeptic and two kids is why the first sight of living dinosaurs lands as awe before it turns into fear.

The creatures came from Stan Winston's practical effects and ILM's digital work, and at 127 minutes the blend still holds, with John Williams carrying the wonder in the score. There is also a production detail I enjoy: Hurricane Iniki hit Hawaii on September 11, 1992, during the final days of filming, and storm footage ended up in the finished film. It earned $1.1 billion worldwide on a $63 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo, and no later film in the series has matched that return on cost. More on the film at jurassic park 1993.

2. Jurassic World Rebirth (2025)

Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), directed by Gareth Edwards, takes second place because it is the first sequel in years that treats dinosaurs as a problem of geography instead of a problem of villains. Five years after Dominion, the animals survive mainly in zones near the equator, and pharmaceutical executive Martin Krebs hires former covert operative Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) to take genetic material from three giant dinosaurs, one each from the sea, land and air. Her team, which includes boat captain Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali) and paleontologist Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey), travels illegally to a restricted island that once housed InGen's research.

A small crew on a mission is the right size for a creature film, and Edwards and composer Alexandre Desplat give it a different feel from the Michael Giacchino scores of the previous three. Perhaps the mission is a little tidy, since a heart disease treatment is a modest reason to hunt giants, but the setting does the heavy lifting. It earned $869 million worldwide on a $225 million budget. You can read more at jurassic world rebirth.

3. The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), directed by Steven Spielberg, ranks third because its central argument, whether to document the animals or capture them, is the best idea any sequel has had. Hammond tells Malcolm that Isla Sorna is where the dinosaurs were bred and that a rival group at InGen wants to take it over. Malcolm refuses to join the team until he learns his girlfriend Sarah Harding is already on the island, and his daughter Kelly secretly comes along.

That puts Jeff Goldblum in the lead, and he plays Malcolm with the dry humor of a man who has seen this before. Julianne Moore, Pete Postlethwaite as Roland Tembo and Vince Vaughn fill out a crowded ensemble. I rank it below the original because the story splits between several groups and some of the side characters read as types, but the film made $619 million on a $73 million budget and the idea underneath it still holds up. See the lost world jurassic park for the full entry.

4. Jurassic World (2015)

Jurassic World (2015), directed by Colin Trevorrow, is fourth because it is the most polished spectacle after the original and the thinnest on people. Twenty-two years after the first disaster, a full park is open on Isla Nublar, Claire Dearing runs it, Owen Grady trains a pack of Velociraptors, and the scientists have built a bigger attraction, the Indominus rex. NBC News reported that Trevorrow designed the hybrid with Jack Horner, and it is a neat way to say the park keeps chasing bigger.

ILM handled about 1,000 visual effects shots, according to Post Magazine, and the park sequences are a pleasure to look at. In my opinion, though, the hybrid behaves like a movie monster more than an animal, and that gap is exactly what separates this film from the 1993 original. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are charming, but the story asks them to carry more than the script gives them. It is the series' biggest earner, and you can read about it at jurassic world 2015.

5. Jurassic Park III (2001)

Jurassic Park III (2001), directed by Joe Johnston, lands fifth because it is the leanest monster movie in the series and knows it. At 92 minutes it is the shortest film, and the setup is simple: Alan Grant, short of money for his raptor research, agrees to guide a wealthy couple, Paul and Amanda Kirby, on a flight over Isla Sorna, and he soon learns they are really hunting for their teenage son Eric. Sam Neill is back in the lead, Laura Dern appears as Ellie, and Spielberg stayed on as executive producer.

The production had script problems, according to reporting, and the film shows some of that strain, but the Spinosaurus was built as an animatronic and it gives the middle of the film real weight. Don Davis scored it, and the soundtrack includes Randy Newman's song Big Hat, No Cattle. It earned $369 million on a $93 million budget. If you want the short, mean version of the saga, start with jurassic park 3.

6. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), directed by J. A. Bayona, ranks sixth because it begins as a rescue film and changes shape midway, and the join shows. A volcano on Isla Nublar is about to erupt, Claire campaigns to save the dinosaurs, and Eli Mills, who works for the wealthy Benjamin Lockwood, offers a plan to move them to a sanctuary. Claire recruits Owen to find Blue, the last raptor, and they travel to the island with a small team.

The island sequences are the best of the Jurassic World era in my opinion, and the film is the only one in the era directed by Bayona. Ian Malcolm returns, as does Dr. Wu. It earned $1.31 billion on a $170 million budget, which makes it a bigger hit than I expected. Read more at jurassic world fallen kingdom, and see blue raptor for the animal at the center of its rescue.

7. Jurassic World Dominion (2022)

Jurassic World Dominion (2022), directed by Colin Trevorrow, comes last because it runs 147 minutes, the longest in the series, and spends too much of that time on threads that pull away from the dinosaurs. Four years after the Lockwood estate, dinosaurs live all over the world, Owen and Claire hide in a remote cabin raising Maisie Lockwood, and Blue turns up with a young offspring that Maisie names Beta. Mercenaries then kidnap both, while Ellie discovers giant locusts swarming crops that do not use seeds from Biosyn Genetics.

Bringing Neill, Dern and Goldblum back alongside Pratt and Howard was the right instinct, and the jurassic park cast page shows how many faces the film gathers. In my opinion, the locust plot takes over from the animals, and a creature film should be about creatures. TheWrap confirmed there is no post credit scene. It still earned just over $1 billion, so plenty of people showed up, and you can judge it for yourself at jurassic world dominion.

What Are the Best Jurassic World Movies?

The best Jurassic World movies, in my order, are Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), Jurassic World (2015), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022). Rebirth wins because it commits to a creature mission, the 2015 film because of its park sequences, and Fallen Kingdom because its island sequences are the best of the era. Dominion is last in both lists, which is why it also answers the question of the worst Jurassic Park movie.

How Should You Use This Ranking?

If you are new to the saga, start with Jurassic Park (1993) and then follow jurassic park movies in order so the later films make sense. If you only have time for one more, pick Rebirth or The Lost World depending on whether you want a new crew or Malcolm. To watch any of them, check where to watch jurassic park. The next jurassic world movie is in development with no confirmed release date, so this list will have to wait for it.

I rank Jurassic World Rebirth (2025) second of seven.
