What Is the Patriot Games Movie About?

Patriot Games is a thriller about Jack Ryan, a former Marine turned CIA analyst, who gets pulled into a feud he never asked for. The film, adapted from Tom Clancy's 1987 novel, opens with Ryan visiting London with his wife and daughter.

While he is there, he sees a group of Irish militants attack a British royal, Lord Holmes. Ryan steps in, kills one of the attackers and is wounded in the fight. That one decision sets the whole film in motion, because the dead man's younger brother, Sean Miller, is captured at the scene and swears to take revenge on Ryan.

If you are new to the saga, the jack ryan movies in order guide lists this film second in both release order and chronological order.

What Songs Are in Patriot Games?

James Horner composed the score for Patriot Games (1992), and the album "Patriot Games" was released by Victor on August 26, 1992, with 10 tracks. It is a score album, so it collects Horner's orchestral work for the film rather than a set of licensed songs.

Horner was the composer on Patriot Games and returned for the next entry in the saga, Clear and Present Danger (1994), which makes the score a rare point of continuity in a series that changes its composer, director and lead actor so often. If you listen to the album on its own, you are hearing the sound of the Harrison Ford era at its start.

The film features one song: "Theme from Harry's Game" by Clannad. A music video for it appears on screen in an early scene of the film. No source says the song was written for the film, so it is marked as not original to Patriot Games in the data.

Here is the song at a glance:

Patriot Games Plot Summary (Full Spoilers)Spoilers

The full plot of Patriot Games runs from Ryan's heroic moment in London to a boat fight near his house, and it hinges on a prison break.

Ryan's quick action saves Lord Holmes, and he is hailed as a hero. Sean Miller is convicted and sent to prison. Ryan returns to the United States, where he teaches at the Naval Academy and works part time with the CIA.

Miller's allies in a hardline splinter group then break him out of a prison van. The group takes refuge in a training camp in North Africa. Ryan studies satellite images that suggest the group is on the move, and he begins to realize that his family may be targeted. A first attack on his wife and daughter on a highway puts both of them in the hospital.

Ryan goes back to work with the agency to help track the group down. A raid on the camp, followed from above, goes badly for the militants, but Miller escapes. He then turns on his own leaders and heads for Ryan's home. Ryan races to protect his family at their waterside house, and the two men fight on a speedboat. Ryan kills Miller before the boat explodes, and he is rescued. The film closes quietly, as his family learns that all is well with the baby they are expecting.

Patriot Games Release and Premiere

Patriot Games opened in US theaters on June 5, 1992, and took $18.5 million on its opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. The UK release followed on September 25, 1992, and Australia on August 13, 1992, with both dates reported by TMDB.

A premiere date, city and venue for the film have not been published. The theatrical run finished with $83 million at the domestic box office and about $178 million worldwide, against a $45 million budget. For how that compares across the saga, see jack ryan box office.

Patriot Games Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The Patriot Games ending settles the personal feud and leaves Ryan's career open, which is exactly what the sequels need. Miller kills the people who helped him and goes after Ryan alone. The two men fight on a boat, and Ryan kills Miller before the boat explodes. An FBI rescue team pulls Ryan to safety, and in the last scene Cathy's doctor says the unborn baby is healthy.

Why does Miller end up alone? In my opinion, that is the cleverest turn in the film. The splinter group that broke him out of the prison van is the same group hit in the raid on the North Africa camp, the raid Ryan follows from above through satellite images. Miller escapes that raid, then turns on his own leaders, so the story shrinks from an organization to one man with a grudge. That is a smart structural choice, because the grudge began on a London street when Ryan killed Miller's older brother, and it can only close in a fight between the two of them.

How does the finale compare with the rest of the saga? The Hunt for Red October (1990), directed by John McTiernan, kept Ryan, then played by Alec Baldwin, behind a desk and a periscope, explaining a Soviet captain's intentions. Here, in my opinion, Phillip Noyce moves Ryan from analyst to participant in four steps: the London ambush, the highway attack on his wife and daughter, the camp raid and the speedboat fight. It could be argued that the waterside house makes the stakes more intimate than any submarine standoff. The baby news is a plain way to show what he fought for, and it lands because the earlier attack put Cathy and Sally in the hospital.

There is a production angle too. Baldwin dropped out after the shooting schedule was pushed back, and Paramount signed Harrison Ford to a three picture deal that began with this film, as The Washington Post reported in 1991. The film cost $45 million and earned about $178 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. Ford and Noyce then reunited for Clear and Present Danger (1994), a bigger and more political story in which Ryan is acting deputy director of intelligence and discovers a covert campaign run behind his back.

As for Ryan's CIA path, Patriot Games does not close it. He has a part time role and a family, and the film leaves the rest open. That is the thread Clear and Present Danger picks up next. The Prime Video series Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan is television and starts from a different place, so none of this ending carries into it.
