Jack Ryan Cast: Every Actor Who Has Played Ryan, and Who Stands Beside Him

Four actors have played Jack Ryan in the five theatrical films, and a fifth, John Krasinski, plays Ryan in the Prime Video film Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War. Tom Clancy's novels created the character, and each actor below has taken the same analyst through a very different screen version of his career.

Alec Baldwin opened the series in The Hunt for Red October (1990), directed by John McTiernan, where he is credited as Dr. Jack Ryan. He shares the screen with Sean Connery as the Soviet captain Marko Ramius, Scott Glenn as Bart Mancuso of the USS Dallas, Sam Neill as Vasily Borodin, Tim Curry as the ship's doctor Yevgeni Petrov and Stellan Skarsgård as Viktor Tupolev. James Earl Jones plays Vice Admiral James Greer, the mentor figure who anchors the later films too.

Harrison Ford took over for Patriot Games (1992) and Clear and Present Danger (1994), both directed by Phillip Noyce. Patriot Games adds Anne Archer as Cathy Ryan, Thora Birch as their daughter Sally, Sean Bean as the vengeful Sean Miller, Patrick Bergin as Kevin O'Donnell, James Fox as Lord Holmes, Samuel L. Jackson as Robby Jackson and Richard Harris as Paddy O'Neil. Clear and Present Danger brings in Willem Dafoe as John Clark, Joaquim de Almeida as Colonel Felix Cortez, Henry Czerny as Robert Ritter, Harris Yulin as James Cutter, Miguel Sandoval as the cartel boss Ernesto Escobedo and Raymond Cruz as Domingo Chavez.

Ben Affleck is Ryan in The Sum of All Fears (2002), directed by Phil Alden Robinson, opposite Morgan Freeman as CIA director William Cabot, Liev Schreiber as John Clark and Bridget Moynahan as Cathy Muller. Chris Pine plays the character in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014), with Keira Knightley as Cathy Muller, Kevin Costner as William Harper, Kenneth Branagh as Viktor Cherevin and Gemma Chan as Amy Chan.

Who plays the president? The role changes with every film. Donald Moffat is President Bennett in Clear and Present Danger, James Cromwell is President Fowler in The Sum of All Fears and Ciarán Hinds plays the Russian president Nemerov in the same film.

Variety reports the Jack Ryan cast for Ghost War, released on Prime Video on May 20, 2026: Krasinski plays Ryan, Wendell Pierce plays James Greer, Michael Kelly plays Mike November and Betty Gabriel plays Elizabeth Wright. TheWrap also lists Sienna Miller, and Variety lists Mckenna Bridger, Max Beesley, Douglas Hodge and JJ Feild, without naming their characters. Four directors made the five theatrical Jack Ryan films, and Phillip Noyce is the only one to direct more than one. John McTiernan made The Hunt for Red October, Noyce made Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, Phil Alden Robinson made The Sum of All Fears and Kenneth Branagh made Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.

Branagh also stepped in front of the camera as the villain Viktor Cherevin, so Shadow Recruit is the one film in the run where its director sits in the cast list. Noyce's pair of films with Harrison Ford is the longest stretch of continuity behind the camera, and it matches the longest stretch in front of it.

The composers changed almost as often as the directors. Basil Poledouris scored The Hunt for Red October, James Horner scored both Noyce films, Jerry Goldsmith scored The Sum of All Fears and Patrick Doyle scored Shadow Recruit. On Ghost War, Variety reports Andrew Bernstein as director. The writers are reported as Aaron Rabin, John Krasinski and Noah Oppenheim, and the producers as Allyson Seeger, Krasinski and Andrew Form. Variety lists Amazon MGM Studios as distributor, with Paramount Pictures, Skydance Media, Genre Arts, Push Boot and Sunday Night Productions as production companies. How many actors have played Jack Ryan? Four across the theatrical films, and five once you count Krasinski in Ghost War on streaming. In my opinion, the recasting is the most interesting part of the cast history, because each new actor brings a different idea of who Ryan is.

The first swap is the best known. Harrison Ford replaced Alec Baldwin for Patriot Games, and the Washington Post covered the change in 1991. It could be argued that the swap worked because Ford carried the series into a darker, more physical register, with a family in danger on a London street rather than a submarine in the Atlantic. Ben Affleck and Chris Pine then reset the character twice more: Affleck as a young analyst in The Sum of All Fears, Pine as a former Marine recruited after the September 11 attacks in Shadow Recruit.

The supporting roles show the same pattern. Cathy has been played by Anne Archer (as Cathy Ryan in both Ford films), by Bridget Moynahan and by Keira Knightley (both as Cathy Muller). Some returns were smaller but still telling. Anne Archer and Thora Birch play Cathy and Sally Ryan in both Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. Colm Feore appears in both The Sum of All Fears (as Olson) and Shadow Recruit (as Rob Behringer), a rare repeat across two different Ryans.
