How many Underworld moviesWhat Are the Underworld Movies About?
The Underworld movies follow a centuries old war between vampires and Lycans, the werewolves of this world, across five films released between 2003 and 2017. The series started with Underworld (2003), directed by Len Wiseman, where Selene (Kate Beckinsale), a vampire Death Dealer, keeps hunting Lycans even though many of her kind think the enemy is nearly wiped out. She notices the Lycans are following a human medical resident named Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman) and starts to ask why. Her suspicions put her at odds with Kraven (Shane Brolly), the vampire leading the coven while the elders are away. The film cost $22 million to make and grossed $95.7 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, so it returned more than four times its budget.
Is Underworld a Goth movie? Not strictly: it is a vampire and werewolf series about a hidden war, and the films carry an R rating in the US. Bill Nighy plays Viktor, the vampire lord who rules the coven, and Michael Sheen plays Lucian, the Lycan leader, and the two give the series its old world feud. The first film was shot in Budapest.
What is the story behind Underworld across all five films? Underworld: Evolution (2006), also directed by Len Wiseman, is the film people mean when they ask what Underworld Part 2 is called. It opens centuries earlier, when three vampire elders raid a werewolf village and capture William Corvinus, the first werewolf, and Viktor locks him away in a secret prison. In the present day, Selene is on the run with Michael, the ancient elder Markus wakes early, and a pendant he wants becomes the key to the story. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009), directed by Patrick Tatopoulos in his first feature as director, goes back before the first film. Viktor keeps a line of enslaved Lycans, and Lucian, born a Lycan but able to take human form, falls in love with Viktor's daughter Sonja (Rhona Mitra). A bond between a vampire and a Lycan is forbidden, and that is the spark.
Underworld: Awakening (2012), directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein, jumps forward to a world where humans have learned that both species exist and have launched a violent purge. Selene wakes from a cryogenic tank many years later and meets a young girl, Eve, held in a lab. Underworld: Blood Wars (released in the US in January 2017), directed by Anna Foerster, finds the vampire covens close to being wiped out by Lycans now led by Marius (Tobias Menzies). Both sides want Selene, and the offer she gets from the Eastern Coven is a trap.
Was Underworld a success? By the numbers, yes: Box Office Mojo and The Numbers put the five films at more than $540 million worldwide. Awakening earned the most at $160.1 million on a $70 million budget, and Blood Wars earned the least at $81.1 million on $35 million. The full breakdown sits on the Underworld box office page, and the cast lists are on the Underworld cast page.
Each film has its own page: Underworld 2003, Underworld Evolution, Underworld Rise of the Lycans, Underworld Awakening and Underworld Blood Wars. For the count and the full list, see how many Underworld movies exist, and for our verdicts, see Underworld movies ranked and Underworld reviews. Tatopoulos handled creature design on the first three films. Paul Haslinger scored Underworld (2003), Rise of the Lycans and Awakening, Marco Beltrami scored Evolution and Michael Wandmacher scored Blood Wars, all covered on the Underworld soundtrack page. If you collect, the Underworld merchandise page is the place to start.

Underworld Movies in Order: Where to Start
The Underworld movies can be watched in two orders: release order starts with Underworld (2003), and chronological order starts with Rise of the Lycans because it is a prequel. The full guide, with context for each film, is on Underworld movies in order.
Release order:
- Underworld (2003), released September 19, 2003
- Underworld: Evolution, released January 20, 2006 in the US
- Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, released January 23, 2009 in the US
- Underworld: Awakening, released January 20, 2012 in the US
- Underworld: Blood Wars, released January 6, 2017 in the US (it opened in Australia on December 1, 2016)
Chronological order:
- Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
- Underworld (2003)
- Underworld: Evolution
- Underworld: Awakening
- Underworld: Blood Wars
Which should you pick? In my opinion, release order is the safer first watch, because Selene and Michael are introduced in Underworld (2003) and Rise of the Lycans is built around Lucian, Viktor and Sonja instead. Selene does not appear in the prequel at all, so a first time viewer who starts there meets the war from the other side. Chronological order is a good second run once you know the characters, perhaps with the Underworld timeline open beside you.
Is There an Underworld 6?
No sixth Underworld film has been announced, and no studio has given a title, cast or release date, so the next film is listed only as in development. The last film, Underworld: Blood Wars, reached US theaters on January 6, 2017. The latest on the question is tracked on Underworld 6, and any footage is listed under Underworld 6 trailer.
What has been reported so far is mostly about television. In September 2023, ComicBook.com, citing Entertainment Weekly, reported that Len Wiseman said a future for Underworld is in the works and confirmed that the project he meant was a TV series. He named no new film, and there is no studio announcement, greenlight or date. In January 2026, CBR reported that Kate Beckinsale said she will not return as Selene in any new Underworld film, adding that the rights holders are people she could not work with. The same CBR article floats a film centered on Eve (India Eisley), but that is the outlet's own speculation and not an announcement.
A later CBR article, from September 2026, says a sixth film has been teased, then says Beckinsale sealed her return as Selene in early 2026, and then quotes her saying a return is not possible. No trade outlet has confirmed the return, so treat it as unconfirmed. A viral trailer titled "Underworld 6: Rise of the Dark Blood" is fan made and AI generated, and it is not evidence of a real project.
Who Are the Main Underworld Characters?

Was Viktor stronger than Michael? The films present them as different kinds of power: Viktor is an elder who rules a coven and imprisons William Corvinus, the first werewolf, while Michael begins as a human whom the Lycans are following. The question has no single answer, and each character page covers how they are presented. The wider family history is on the Corvinus bloodline page, and it includes Alexander Corvinus (Derek Jacobi) and William Corvinus (Brian Steele) from Evolution.
