Divergent Movies: What the Series Is About

The Divergent series follows Tris Prior through a walled future Chicago in which society is divided into five factions, each built around a single virtue: Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless and Erudite. The Divergent movies adapt the novels of Veronica Roth. For a closer look at the groups themselves, the divergent factions page explains what each one values and how the films portray them.

In Divergent (2014), directed by Neil Burger, Beatrice Prior has grown up in selfless Abnegation but does not feel she belongs there. At her aptitude test the administrator, Tori, finds that Beatrice matches several factions rather than one, secretly changes the record and warns her to hide the result. At the choosing ceremony Beatrice leaves her family and picks Dauntless, the brave faction. Theo James plays Four and Jai Courtney plays Eric in the film.

Insurgent (2015), directed by Robert Schwentke, opens days after the Erudite faction's attack on Abnegation. Jeanine Matthews, played by Kate Winslet, declares martial law and hunts the Divergent, so Tris, Four, her brother Caleb and Peter go on the run and shelter with the peaceful Amity faction. Allegiant (2016), also directed by Schwentke, begins with Chicago in turmoil after the old faction system has fallen, with Evelyn in control of the city, its wall closed and Jeanine's supporters on trial. Tris and Four then escape over the wall with Christina, Peter and Tori.

The series arrived on a steady rhythm, with one film in March of each year from 2014 to 2016, and its commercial path is easy to read from the figures. Divergent (2014) earned $289 million worldwide on an $85 million budget, Insurgent earned $297 million on $110 million, and Allegiant earned $179 million on $110 million, according to Box Office Mojo and The Numbers. That drop of roughly $118 million between the second and third films is the clearest backdrop to what happened to the planned finale, and the divergent box office page sets the numbers out film by film.

The music changed hands along the way. Tom Holkenborg composed the score for Divergent (2014), while Joseph Trapanese scored Insurgent and Allegiant, and the films carried songs such as Beating Heart by Ellie Goulding, Holes in the Sky by M83 featuring Haim and Scars by Tove Lo. The divergent soundtrack page lists the notable tracks per film, and the divergent timeline page lays the story out event by event for anyone who wants the sequence of the world rather than the sequence of the releases.

Divergent Movies in Order: Where Should You Start?

The Divergent movies are best watched in release order, which is also their chronological order: Divergent (2014), then Insurgent (2015), then Allegiant (2016). The story runs straight through the three films, so there is no flashback structure to untangle and no spin-off to slot in between. The full guide to divergent movies in order gives the dates and a short context line for each film.

  1. Divergent (2014), directed by Neil Burger, 140 minutes. Tris chooses Dauntless.
  2. Insurgent, directed by Robert Schwentke, 119 minutes. Jeanine declares martial law and hunts the Divergent.
  3. Allegiant, directed by Robert Schwentke, 120 minutes. Tris and Four cross the wall.

The planned fourth film, Ascendant, appears nowhere in either order because it was never produced. If you are new to the series, start with Divergent (2014), since the faction rules and the meaning of the word Divergent are set up there and the sequels do not pause to rebuild them. If you already know the first film, the how many Divergent movies are there index lists all three with their runtimes, and the divergent movies ranked page gives our opinion on which is strongest.

Is There a Fourth Divergent Movie?

There is no fourth Divergent movie, and as of 3 November 2026 no new film has been announced with a release date, cast, crew or production company. The next Divergent film is listed only as in development, with its date marked to be confirmed, and everything else about it is blank. The divergent ascendant page tracks the status and will carry any confirmed change.

The gap has a clear history. In September 2015 the final book was announced to be split into two films, with Allegiant due in March 2016 and Ascendant in a spring 2017 window, according to The Christian Science Monitor. In February 2016 Robert Schwentke left Ascendant, as ScreenCrush reported when relaying Deadline's account. After Allegiant opened to weak business, the finale was reported in July 2016 to be moving to a television movie, according to /Film. Then, in October 2023, Entertainment Weekly reported that Lionsgate's plans for a final film had been scrapped and that Roth said Ascendant would never be made and that the story felt complete.

The news since then comes from publishing, not cinema. Veronica Roth's new alternate universe novel The Sixth Faction was due on 6 October 2026, with a sequel, The Last Testimony, due in February 2027, according to Cinefilos. No studio has attached a film to either book. Because Ascendant never shot a frame, there is no footage to show, so the divergent ascendant trailer page collects the trailers for the three films that were released.
