About the X-Men Movies: What the Series Is
The X-Men series is a superhero saga about mutants, people born with extraordinary powers who are feared and legislated against by the wider world, and it runs to 13 films across two decades. The story begins with X-Men (2000), directed by Bryan Singer, in which Senator Kelly pushes a law that would force mutants to register, the telepath Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) fears how Erik Lehnsherr, now called Magneto (Ian McKellen), will react, and a drifter named Logan (Hugh Jackman) is pulled into Xavier's school for gifted mutants. If you have ever followed a long television drama that swapped half its cast partway through, the shape will feel familiar, because the series later rewinds to the 1960s and recasts the leads.
The seven main saga films are X-Men (2000), X2 (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men: First Class (2011), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) and Dark Phoenix (2019). Singer directed four of them: X-Men (2000), X2, Days of Future Past and Apocalypse. Brett Ratner directed The Last Stand, Matthew Vaughn directed First Class and Simon Kinberg directed Dark Phoenix. The cast changes the most from First Class onward, when James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender play the young Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr, with Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, and Days of Future Past is the film that puts both generations on screen together.
Six spin-offs sit around the main films. The Wolverine trilogy is X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) by Gavin Hood, then The Wolverine (2013) and Logan (2017), both by James Mangold. Ryan Reynolds then leads Deadpool (2016), directed by Tim Miller, and Deadpool 2 (2018), directed by David Leitch. The last of the 13 to arrive was The New Mutants (2020), directed by Josh Boone. Deadpool, Deadpool 2 and Logan are the three R rated films in the US, while the rest are PG-13. For the full list, see how many X-Men movies there are. Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) is a Marvel Studios film, so it is not one of the 13, and its page is in the Marvel franchise.
The series has earned about $6.08 billion worldwide, adding up the Box Office Mojo figures for all 13 films. Deadpool 2 is the highest grosser at $785.9 million worldwide, just ahead of Deadpool at $782.8 million and Days of Future Past at $746 million. At the other end, Dark Phoenix took $252 million on a $200 million budget and The New Mutants took $49 million on a $67 million budget. The X-Men box office page breaks down every film.
Are the X-Men part of Marvel? The characters are Marvel Comics creations, and Marvel Studios is now developing its own X-Men film, separate from the 13 Fox films. If you want the powers behind the stories, the guide to X-Men powers covers them, and the X-Men series cast page lists who played whom.

X-Men Movies in Order: Where to Start
Release order is the best way to start, with chronological order as the alternative, and the full sequence with context for each film sits at X-Men movies in order. Release order is: X-Men (2000), X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, X-Men: First Class, The Wolverine, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Deadpool, X-Men: Apocalypse, Logan, Deadpool 2, Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants. Chronological order starts at First Class, then Origins: Wolverine, X-Men (2000), X2, The Last Stand, The Wolverine, Days of Future Past, Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix, Deadpool, Deadpool 2, Logan and The New Mutants.
So, which one should you pick? In my opinion, release order is the better choice for a first viewing. X-Men (2000) opens at Auschwitz in 1944, with young Erik Lehnsherr bending a metal gate with his mind, and that image is the root of the whole Xavier and Magneto rivalry. X2 then follows Colonel Stryker's raid on the school while Wolverine is away chasing clues about his own past, and The Last Stand brings Jean Grey back with unstable power. Watched in that order, the Jean Grey story builds the way audiences first met it, and Bryan Singer's two opening films set the tone that The Last Stand, at $210 million the most expensive of the three, then pushes toward a much bigger battle.
The chronological route has its own case, and it could be argued that it suits a second viewing better. First Class begins in 1944 and 1962, with CIA agent Moira MacTaggert tracing Sebastian Shaw's Hellfire Club to Charles and Erik, and Origins: Wolverine reaches back to James Howlett in the 1840s. The trouble is that Days of Future Past, where Kitty Pryde sends Wolverine's mind back to 1973 to stop Bolivar Trask's Sentinel program, works best once you have met both casts as separate generations. It is also the film that justifies the retcon, since it lets the later films, including Apocalypse in 1983 and Dark Phoenix in 1992, rewrite what the original trilogy established.
Two placement notes help. The Wolverine opens in Nagasaki in 1945 but spends most of its running time with an older Logan in Japan, so it sits after The Last Stand in both orders. Logan is set in 2029, which is why it lands near the end of the chronological order, and its R rating and quieter tone make it a better closer than an opener, in my view. Deadpool and Deadpool 2 can be watched at almost any point, because their jokes about the franchise land best if you already know the films being teased. The rest of the sequence is on the X-Men timeline, a Wolverine fan can follow the Wolverine movies in order instead, and the X-Men movies ranked page puts all 13 in my order of preference.
New X-Men Movie: What Marvel Studios Has Announced
The next X-Men film comes from Marvel Studios and is dated for May 5, 2028 in US theaters. The studio revealed its opening cast and that worldwide date at Disney's D23 Expo in August 2026. Jake Schreier is the director, a role TheWrap first tied to him in May 2025, when he was reported to be in early talks. The full status, cast and rumor tracking lives on the new X-Men movie page, and the new X-Men movie trailer page is where any footage would be collected.
For the team itself, Marvel confirmed Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Scott Summers / Cyclops and Christopher Abbott as Charles Xavier / Professor X. Inde Navarrette plays Rogue, Maya Boyd is Ororo Munroe / Storm, Samara Weaving is Emma Frost, and Adam Driver is the villain Nathaniel Milbury / Mister Sinister. Collider adds two names that are reported rather than final: Asa Germann as Angel and Ben Wang as Bobby Drake / Iceman, with Wang's deal not yet closed. Collider also lists Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo as writers and Kevin Feige as a producer. As of November 2, 2026, no filming start date had been reported.
One casting item is only a rumor: Charles Melton is linked to Hank McCoy / Beast, and he has reportedly expressed interest, but nothing is unconfirmed beyond that. Marvel has not announced a plot, so it is unknown whether the film acts as a prequel, a reboot or something else, and a cast list alone cannot settle that.
