What Are the Resident Evil Movies?
The Resident Evil movies are a live action franchise of eight theatrical films that follow the fallout from the Umbrella Corporation's outbreak across three separate runs. The first is the Alice saga: six films from Resident Evil (2002), directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, to Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016), with Milla Jovovich in the lead every time. The second is the reboot Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021), directed by Johannes Roberts. The third is Resident Evil (2026), directed by Zach Cregger.
What ties the runs together? Each one returns to the Umbrella Corporation, the company whose research releases the T-virus, and to Raccoon City, the town that pays for it. The Umbrella Corporation is the closest thing the series has to a constant, which is useful because the cast, the tone and even the continuity reset between runs. Anderson directed four of the six Alice films (2002, Afterlife, Retribution and The Final Chapter), while Alexander Witt directed Apocalypse and Russell Mulcahy directed Extinction.
Jovovich's Alice anchors her run, and other characters turn up around her one at a time: Jill Valentine in Apocalypse, Claire Redfield and Albert Wesker in Extinction, Chris Redfield in Afterlife, and Leon S. Kennedy and Ada Wong in Retribution. Alice was created for the films and does not appear in the games, one of several differences between the two. The Resident Evil games vs movies page compares the others.
The scares change with each run. The Anderson films lean on set pieces: the Red Queen sealing the Hive in 2002, the supersoldier Nemesis hunting survivors through a quarantined Raccoon City in Apocalypse, and a convoy crossing a desert wasteland in Extinction. Welcome to Raccoon City returns to 1998 and a remote mansion where a police team has gone missing. Resident Evil (2026) shrinks everything to one snowy night, a medical courier and a hospital, which makes it closer to a siege than a saga. All of the films are rated R in the US.
The budgets and grosses swing widely across the series. Resident Evil (2002) cost $33 million and took in about $103 million worldwide. Resident Evil: Afterlife, the first film shot in 3D, cost $60 million and grossed about $300 million, and The Final Chapter cost $40 million and grossed about $312 million, with only $26.8 million of that in the US. Welcome to Raccoon City cost $25 million and took in about $42 million, while Resident Evil (2026) cost $75 million and sits near $400 million. The Resident Evil box office page has the figures film by film, and the Resident Evil timeline shows how the stories line up.
