What Are the Step Up Movies About?

The Step Up franchise is a series of five theatrical dance films released between August 2006 and August 2014, each following dancers who use a competition, a crew or a stage to prove they belong. The first film, Step Up (2006), directed by Anne Fletcher, introduced Tyler Gage, a Baltimore street dancer played by Channing Tatum, and Nora Clark, a ballet student played by Jenna Dewan. Every later film changed the city, the crew and most of the lead cast, so the list of Step Up movies reads more like linked stories than one long plot.

Why does the setting keep changing? Each sequel starts a fresh story in a new place. Step Up 2: The Streets (2008), directed by Jon M. Chu, returns to Baltimore with Andie West, a grieving street dancer who dances with an illegal crew called the 410 while trying to enter the Maryland School of the Arts. Step Up 3D (2010), also directed by Chu, moves to New York City, where Moose and his friend Camille start at NYU and meet Luke and his crew, the Pirates. Step Up Revolution (2012), directed by Scott Speer, shifts to Miami, where Sean leads a flash mob crew called The Mob. Step Up: All In (2014), directed by Trish Sie, sends Sean and The Mob to Los Angeles, with a three year Las Vegas show as the prize.

It could be argued that the real lead of the series is the ensemble rather than any one couple, because the same faces keep crossing from film to film. Camille, played by Alyson Stoner, appears in Step Up (2006), Step Up 3D and Step Up: All In. Moose, played by Adam Sevani, appears in Step Up 2: The Streets, Step Up 3D and Step Up: All In. Stephen 'tWitch' Boss plays Jason in Step Up 3D, Step Up Revolution and Step Up: All In. That recurring cast is what ties a Baltimore school story to a Las Vegas dance contest.

For families, the ratings are steady: all five films carry a PG-13 in the US, a PG in Australia, and in the UK the first two are PG while the other three are rated 12. The films are also modest in budget, from $12 million for Step Up (2006) to $33 million for Step Up Revolution, and the series took in about $649 million worldwide combined, according to Box Office Mojo. Step Up (2006) alone earned about $114 million on its $12 million budget. The television series Step Up: High Water is a separate project that has no film page on Cinvibe.

What Is the Order of the Step Up Movies?

The Step Up movies are watched in the order they were released, and the chronological order is the same five films in the same sequence. That makes the list simple: start with Step Up (2006) and finish with Step Up: All In. Our full guide, step up movies in order, explains where to begin if you only want one or two films.

  1. Step Up (2006), directed by Anne Fletcher, released in the US on August 11, 2006, runtime 104 minutes.
  2. Step Up 2: The Streets, directed by Jon M. Chu, released in the US on February 14, 2008, runtime 98 minutes.
  3. Step Up 3D, directed by Jon M. Chu, released in the US on August 6, 2010, runtime 107 minutes.
  4. Step Up Revolution, directed by Scott Speer, released in the US on July 27, 2012, runtime 99 minutes.
  5. Step Up: All In, directed by Trish Sie, released in the US on August 8, 2014, runtime 112 minutes.

How many films are there in total? There are five, and the page on how many step up movies there are lists each one with its rating and gross. Each story stands on its own, so a viewer who joins at Step Up 3D will follow the plot, although the cameos and returning crews land harder if you have seen the earlier films. For the story told in sequence, see the step up timeline, and for our opinions on which film is best, see step up movies ranked.

Is Step Up 6 Happening?

Step Up 6 has no confirmed release date, cast or director, so there is nothing firm to report for step up 6. The most recent main series entry remains Step Up: All In, released in the US on August 8, 2014, and no new theatrical film has a date attached to it.

What has happened since then? The activity has been on television. TheWrap reported in May 2020 that the series Step Up: High Water moved from YouTube to Starz after its YouTube run ended. That show is not a film, and it does not change the film count.

Because there is no confirmed date or cast, there is also no step up 6 trailer to watch. If a studio or a major trade paper such as Variety, The Hollywood Reporter or Deadline announces a sequel, the title, date and cast will appear on the next movie page with sources, and any rumor will be labeled as a rumor.
