There are five Jack Ryan movies: five theatrical thrillers from The Hunt for Red October (1990) to Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014), plus Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War, a Prime Video film released on May 20, 2026. Four actors have played the CIA analyst in those five films (Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine), and Variety reports that John Krasinski plays him in Ghost War.

How many Jack Ryan moviesJack Ryan Movies: What the Franchise Covers
The Jack Ryan movies are five theatrical thrillers about a CIA analyst, released between 1990 and 2014, and the franchise now also includes Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War, a Prime Video film released on May 20, 2026. Ryan is an analyst, not a gadget carrying spy: he reads the evidence first and then gets pulled into the field, which gives the saga a different engine from most action franchises. The lead changes three times across the five films, and Phillip Noyce is the only director to return. If you want the book side of that story, our guide to Jack Ryan books vs movies covers it. The Prime Video series Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, which also stars John Krasinski, is television, so it has no film page here.
The Hunt for Red October (1990), directed by John McTiernan, set the template. Alec Baldwin plays Ryan opposite Sean Connery as Marko Ramius, captain of a Soviet ballistic missile submarine with a nearly silent propulsion system. Most of the tension sits in sonar rooms and wardrooms, as the American submarine USS Dallas loses track of the boat and Ryan argues that Ramius may be trying to defect. Basil Poledouris scored it, and it earned about $201 million worldwide on a $30 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo.
Harrison Ford took over the role for the Patriot Games movie (1992), directed by Phillip Noyce, and returned for the Clear and Present Danger movie (1994), also directed by Noyce. In Patriot Games, Ryan is a former Marine turned analyst visiting London with his wife and daughter when he steps in to stop an attack on Lord Holmes, which makes an enemy of Sean Miller (Sean Bean). In Clear and Present Danger, Willem Dafoe joins as John Clark, while Ryan serves as acting deputy director of intelligence, helps win funding for what he believes is a limited effort against a Colombian cartel, and does not know the President has quietly approved something larger. At $216 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, it is the highest grossing of the five theatrical films.
The Sum of All Fears (2002), directed by Phil Alden Robinson, recast Ryan with Ben Affleck as a junior analyst, with Morgan Freeman as CIA director William Cabot and a Jerry Goldsmith score. The story starts with an Israeli nuclear bomb lost in the 1973 war and later dug up by a scrap collector in Syria. Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit (2014), directed by Kenneth Branagh, who also plays the villain Viktor Cherevin, starred Chris Pine and rewound Ryan to a student in London on September 11, then the Marines, then a covert post on Wall Street. At 105 minutes it is the shortest of the five, and it grossed about $136 million on a $60 million budget.
Ghost War is a separate, streaming only release, with John Krasinski reported by Variety as Ryan. Adding the Box Office Mojo worldwide figures, the five theatrical films earned about $924 million between them. Jack Ryan Movies in Order: Where Should You Start?
The Jack Ryan movies in order are The Hunt for Red October (1990), Patriot Games (1992), Clear and Present Danger (1994), The Sum of All Fears (2002) and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014), and release order and story order give the same list. The full explanation, with context for Ghost War, sits on our Jack Ryan movies in order guide.
- The Hunt for Red October (1990), Alec Baldwin
- Patriot Games (1992), Harrison Ford
- Clear and Present Danger (1994), Harrison Ford
- The Sum of All Fears (2002), Ben Affleck
- Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014), Chris Pine
Where does a new viewer begin? In my opinion, Patriot Games is the smoothest door in. Its opening set piece, with Ryan stepping into an attack on Lord Holmes on a London street, kills one attacker, gets him wounded and gives Sean Miller a reason to hunt him, so the film explains who Ryan is by showing what he does under pressure. The Washington Post reported in September 1991 that Harrison Ford replaced Alec Baldwin in the role, on a three picture deal, with a delay to the schedule, and that deal is why Ford made both Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger under Phillip Noyce. The money backed it up: Patriot Games earned about $178 million worldwide on a $45 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo.
The Hunt for Red October is the better pick if you want submarine tension and Sean Connery. It asks for no earlier knowledge, and it is the most efficient of the five, with about $201 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. Its best sequence is quiet: the USS Dallas loses track of Red October, and Ryan has to persuade a room of skeptics that Marko Ramius means to defect rather than attack. That is the analyst at his most useful, and it is the clearest contrast with the field heavy second half of Clear and Present Danger, which runs 141 minutes against 135 for Red October.
Nothing forces you to watch the films in sequence, because the lead changes three times and each recast restarts Ryan's story. Shadow Recruit is the plainest fresh start, since it opens with Ryan as a student in London during the September 11 attacks. According to TheWrap, Paramount moved it from December 25, 2013 to January 17, 2014 and changed its title, and at 105 minutes it is the leanest of the five. If you watch only two, I would pair Red October with Clear and Present Danger, the biggest earner of the five at about $216 million worldwide. Next Jack Ryan Movie: What Is the Latest Film?
The newest Jack Ryan film is Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War, released on May 20, 2026, and unlike the five earlier films it never played in theaters. TheWrap confirmed the date when the trailer arrived on March 17, 2026, and Amazon's own listing says it streams exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. Because the release was global, no separate UK or Australian dates were given.
Who made it? Variety reports that Amazon MGM Studios distributes the film, with Paramount Pictures, Skydance Media, Genre Arts, Push Boot and Sunday Night Productions credited as production companies. Paramount's name is a reminder that the studio released all five theatrical films. Andrew Bernstein is reported as director. Aaron Rabin, John Krasinski and Noah Oppenheim are the reported writers, and Krasinski also produces, alongside Allyson Seeger and Andrew Form.
On screen, Variety reports Krasinski as Jack Ryan, with the Prime Video series regulars Wendell Pierce (James Greer), Michael Kelly (Mike November) and Betty Gabriel (Elizabeth Wright). TheWrap adds Sienna Miller, and Variety lists Mckenna Bridger, Max Beesley, Douglas Hodge and JJ Feild. The trailer is on the Jack Ryan movie trailer page.
What comes after Ghost War? No sequel has been announced or reported as of November 3, 2026, so nothing is listed as upcoming. Any later title will be tracked on the next Jack Ryan movie page.
