What Are All the Hannibal Movies?

The Hannibal Lecter film series is five movies built around one character, a brilliant psychiatrist who is also a killer and a cannibal. The films arrived between 1986 and 2007 with different directors and different casts, so the series reads less like a planned saga and more like a run of separate adaptations that share a villain. If you are wondering how many Hannibal movies there are, the count is four main films plus one spin-off.

The first is Manhunter 1986, directed by Michael Mann. It is an earlier screen version of the story later filmed as Red Dragon, and it stars William L. Petersen as retired FBI profiler Will Graham, Tom Noonan as the killer Francis Dollarhyde and Brian Cox as Dr. Hannibal Lecktor (the film spells his surname that way). It runs 120 minutes, grossed about $8.9 million worldwide according to Box Office Mojo, and returned to US theaters as a restored Final Cut through Rialto Pictures on July 24, 2026.

The film that made the character famous is The Silence of the Lambs (1991), directed by Jonathan Demme. Jodie Foster plays FBI trainee Clarice Starling, Hopkins plays Lecter from inside a prison cell, and Ted Levine plays the killer known as Buffalo Bill. It cost $19 million and took $273 million worldwide. Ten years on came Hannibal 2001, directed by Ridley Scott, with Julianne Moore as Clarice, Gary Oldman as the wealthy and disfigured Mason Verger, and Lecter living under a false name in Florence. It cost $87 million and made more than $350 million worldwide, the best result in the series.

The last two films go in opposite directions in time. Red Dragon 2002, directed by Brett Ratner, returns to Will Graham's first meeting with Lecter, this time with Edward Norton as Graham, Hopkins back as Lecter and Ralph Fiennes as Dolarhyde. Hannibal Rising (2007), directed by Peter Webber, goes back to 1944 Lithuania and follows a young Lecter, played by Gaspard Ulliel, with Gong Li as Lady Murasaki.

Together the five films have earned roughly $925 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. Each film's budget and earnings are set out in the Hannibal box office breakdown.

The NBC series Hannibal and the CBS series Clarice are television productions, so they sit outside the film count. They are covered on the Hannibal TV series page.

Which Hannibal Movies Should You Watch First?

Watch The Silence of the Lambs first, because Hannibal (2001) is its sequel, set ten years after the Buffalo Bill case. The full guide to Hannibal movies in order explains both routes.

Release order:

  1. Manhunter (1986)
  2. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
  3. Hannibal (2001)
  4. Red Dragon (2002)
  5. Hannibal Rising (2007)

Chronological order:

  1. Hannibal Rising (1944 onward)
  2. Red Dragon (starting in 1980)
  3. Manhunter (the same case as Red Dragon)
  4. The Silence of the Lambs
  5. Hannibal (2001)

Is Red Dragon a prequel to The Silence of the Lambs? In story terms, yes: it opens in 1980 with Will Graham's confrontation with Lecter and then follows the hunt for the killer the press calls the Tooth Fairy, all before Clarice Starling meets Lecter. It was released after both Silence and Hannibal, though. Manhunter tells the same case with a different cast, so it sits beside Red Dragon in the chronological order rather than as a separate chapter.

The two versions of that case make a useful comparison. Michael Mann's Manhunter (1986) casts William L. Petersen as Graham, Tom Noonan as Dollarhyde and Brian Cox as a Lecktor who appears in a prison cell and not as the centerpiece. Red Dragon (2002) rebuilds the same story around star power: Edward Norton as Graham, Ralph Fiennes as Dolarhyde (the credits spell it differently) and Anthony Hopkins returning as Lecter, and it opens with the 1980 capture that Manhunter only refers to. In my opinion, that opening is the clearest sign of how the series changed. Lecter began as a supporting figure in a procedural and became the name on the poster.

The money tells the same story. The Silence of the Lambs turned a $19 million budget into $273 million worldwide, and Hannibal (2001) spent $87 million and reached more than $350 million, according to Box Office Mojo. Red Dragon cost $78 million and took $209 million, while Hannibal Rising cost $50 million and took $82 million. It could be argued that the series peaked with a sequel that followed Clarice, now played by Julianne Moore, and Lecter, who had spent the decade hiding in Florence under a false name, and that the later films spent the goodwill. That is a reading, not a fact.

So, which route should you take? I would go with release order for a first viewing, since each film then lands the way audiences met it and the prequels work as a reward rather than a setup. Perhaps the best single session is Silence followed by Red Dragon, which pairs two Hopkins films that each follow one hunt. If you want the family history behind Lecter, save Hannibal Rising (set in 1944 Lithuania and Paris) for last.

Is There a New Hannibal Movie?

No new Hannibal Lecter film has been announced by a studio, and Hannibal Rising (2007) remains the most recent entry. The only report of a new film is a rumor: on January 30, 2025, CBR, citing the insider Daniel Richtman, reported that Universal is developing a new Hannibal Lecter movie. The report named no filmmakers or cast, did not say whether Anthony Hopkins would return, and Universal had not commented. Its status is unconfirmed.

That leaves the project with no title, no release date in any country and no confirmed production status. The 2026 Final Cut of Manhunter is a restoration of a 1986 film, so it does not count as a new release. Any announcement will be covered at new Hannibal movie, and an official trailer will be available at new Hannibal movie trailer.

Manhunter is counted as a spin-off because it is an earlier adaptation of the story that Red Dragon later retold, and the other four are the main films.

How many Hannibal films are there?

There are four main films plus one spin-off, five in total. The main films are The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal (2001), Red Dragon and Hannibal Rising, and the spin-off is Manhunter. Together they took roughly $925 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.

Why is Jodie Foster not in Hannibal?

Which should I watch first, Hannibal or Silence of the Lambs?

Watch The Silence of the Lambs first. Hannibal (2001) is set ten years after the Buffalo Bill case and follows Clarice Starling and Lecter after the events of the 1991 film, so it works best as a sequel. The full routes are covered in the Hannibal movies in order guide.
