How many Twilight movies are thereWhat Are the Twilight Movies About?
The Twilight movies are a five film romance and fantasy saga about a teenager, Bella Swan, and the vampire she falls for, Edward Cullen. The story begins in Forks, Washington, a rainy town where Bella moves in with her father Charlie, the local police chief. At her new school she notices the Cullens, a group of unusually pale adopted siblings, and Edward soon behaves strangely around her.
The saga is easiest to follow as one long story rather than five separate ones. Twilight (2008), directed by Catherine Hardwicke, sets up the central couple. The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009), directed by Chris Weitz, follows Bella through a painful separation after the Cullens leave Forks. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010), directed by David Slade, brings in a growing army of newborn vampires and puts Bella in a hard spot between Edward and Jacob Black. The final two films, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 (2011) and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 (2012), were both directed by Bill Condon and shot back to back as one story split in two.
How big did the saga get? The money tells most of it. Twilight (2008) earned $405 million worldwide on a $37 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. New Moon then earned $710 million, Eclipse $698 million and Breaking Dawn Part 1 $732 million. The final film, Breaking Dawn Part 2, reached about $889 million worldwide on a $120 million budget. Added together, the five films come to roughly $3.4 billion, and each figure is broken down in our Twilight box office guide.
The director's chair changed often. Hardwicke directed the first film, and Screen Daily reported in December 2008 that Weitz had taken over the sequel. Each film also has a different composer, from Lizzy Pattinson on Twilight (2008) to Alexandre Desplat on New Moon, Howard Shore on Eclipse and Carter Burwell on both Breaking Dawn films. The soundtrack for the first film topped the Billboard 200, with Paramore's Decode among its best known tracks, and the full track story sits in our Twilight soundtrack guide.
What does the production history say about the series? Looked at side by side, the five films show a small romance that became a studio priority. The budget rose from $37 million on Twilight (2008) to $50 million on New Moon, $68 million on Eclipse, $110 million on Breaking Dawn Part 1 and $120 million on Breaking Dawn Part 2. The first film's story of a girl and a boy in a school parking lot, with Edward stopping that sliding van, was a modest, forest-and-rain drama. By New Moon the scale had widened to Montepulciano in Italy, where the Volturi scenes were filmed around the Piazza Grande fountain, according to Visit Tuscany. Eclipse moved production to Vancouver, with filming announced in August 2009, as Screen Daily reported. Breaking Dawn is the most unusual case: Condon shot both parts together, with Baton Rouge filming wrapping around February 2011, according to the Business Report. In my opinion, that back to back approach is why Part 2 feels like a direct continuation instead of a fresh sequel, and Renesmee shows the cost of the ambition, since the production used CGI and face mapping on Mackenzie Foy after dropping an animatronic doll, as Bustle reported.
All five films carry a PG-13 rating in the US. In the UK each is rated 12A, and in Australia four are rated M while Breaking Dawn Part 1 is rated MA15+. If you are choosing for a younger teenager, that Australian classification is the one to check. For how the stories compare with Stephenie Meyer's novels, see Twilight books vs movies, and the Cullen family page explains who the vampires in Forks are.
Is everything in the saga a movie? No. Twilight: Midnight Sun is an animated series ordered by Netflix, so it is television and not part of the five film count. What Is the Order of the Twilight Movies?
The Twilight movies should be watched in release order, which is also the chronological order.
- Twilight (2008), directed by Catherine Hardwicke, released in the US on November 21, 2008.
- The Twilight Saga: New Moon, directed by Chris Weitz, released November 20, 2009.
- The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, directed by David Slade, released June 30, 2010.
- The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1, directed by Bill Condon, released November 18, 2011.
- The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, directed by Bill Condon, released November 16, 2012.
The one rule is to keep the two Breaking Dawn parts together at the end. Part 1 builds toward a wedding and a honeymoon, and Part 2 begins with the aftermath, so skipping between them leaves the second film hard to follow. Runtimes are manageable for a weekend, from 115 minutes for Breaking Dawn Part 2 up to 131 minutes for New Moon, about 609 minutes in total.
If you are planning a marathon, two films on a first evening and the remaining three on a second works well. Our Twilight movies in order page gives the full list with a note on where to start, and the Twilight timeline lines up the story beats for a refresher before the final film.
Is There a New Twilight Movie?
No new Twilight movie has been announced, so there is no sixth film and no release date. The newest film in the saga remains The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, released in November 2012, and any talk of a live-action sequel or reboot is fan speculation rather than a studio plan.
The question came up again in August 2025, when a Lionsgate social media teaser titled Forever Begins Again showed images of Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. Fans guessed that a new film was coming. Lionsgate's follow-up said that no new Twilight movie was in the works, and the campaign turned out to promote a theatrical re-release of all five original films in October 2025, as reported by Yahoo Entertainment, syndicating ComingSoon.net.
The one new project is not a film. Netflix announced in September 2024 that Twilight: Midnight Sun is an animated series, with Lionsgate Television producing, Sinead Daly writing and executive producing, and Stephenie Meyer executive producing. When Deseret News reported on it, the series had no release date and no cast announced. Because it is television, it does not get a film page or a place in the film count.
If a studio announces a sixth film, the details will appear on the new Twilight movie page, and any official footage will be gathered on the new Twilight movie trailer page. Until then, the five released films are the complete cinema story.
Who Are the Main Twilight Characters?
Twilight charactersThe main Twilight characters are Bella Swan, Edward Cullen and Jacob Black, played by Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner in all five films. Around them sits a large ensemble, and our full Twilight characters page covers each one.
Bella Swan is the teenager who moves from Phoenix, Arizona, to Forks and becomes determined to learn what Edward is hiding. Edward Cullen is the vampire who saves her from a sliding van in the school parking lot. Jacob Black, a friend of Bella's and a member of the werewolf pack, tells Bella he loves her in Eclipse, which leaves her torn between him and Edward. Charlie Swan, Bella's father, is played by Billy Burke in every film.
The Cullen family is the other half of the cast. Carlisle Cullen is played by Peter Facinelli, Alice Cullen by Ashley Greene and Rosalie Hale by Nikki Reed, and all three appear across the five films alongside Kellan Lutz, Elizabeth Reaser and Jackson Rathbone. The Cullen family page shows how the household fits together.
The villains and rivals change from film to film. Victoria first appears in Twilight (2008) and drives the army plot in Eclipse, played by Rachelle Lefevre in the first two films and by Bryce Dallas Howard in Eclipse. Aro, played by Michael Sheen, appears in New Moon and the two Breaking Dawn films, with Dakota Fanning as Jane. Renesmee, played by Mackenzie Foy, is central to the final film. For the full credits, see the Twilight cast guide.
