What Is The Sum of All Fears About?

The Sum of All Fears is a 2002 thriller about a lost Israeli nuclear bomb that ends up with a neo-Nazi network determined to push the United States and Russia into war. The story starts in 1973, when an Israeli warplane carrying the bomb is shot down over the Golan Heights during that year's war. Decades later a scrap collector in Syria digs the weapon up and sells it to an arms dealer, and from there it passes to a wealthy Austrian named Dressler, who leads the group.

Meanwhile, Russia has a new president, Nemerov. CIA director William Cabot, played by Morgan Freeman, brings in a junior analyst named Jack Ryan (Ben Affleck) because Ryan has done research on the man. Ryan starts the film as the analyst who happens to know the right file, a bit like the one colleague who actually read the manual being pulled into the emergency call.

If you are placing the film in the series, it is the fourth Jack Ryan film by release order. It sits after the Clear and Present Danger movie and before Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit. Our guide to Jack Ryan movies in order explains how the four actors fit together.

The Sum of All Fears Soundtrack and Score

Jerry Goldsmith composed the score for The Sum of All Fears (2002), and the soundtrack album, "The Sum of All Fears", was released by Elektra on June 4, 2002, with 16 tracks. Goldsmith was the only credited score composer on the film, and his work is one of four different composers across the five Jack Ryan films.

The film also features four songs, two of them written for it. "If We Could Remember" by Yolanda Adams and "The Mission" by Shana Blake Hill were both made for the film. The other two are "Nessun Dorma (from Turandot)" by Bruce Sledge and "If We Get Through This" by Tabitha Fair.

  • "If We Could Remember" by Yolanda Adams (written for the film)
  • "The Mission" by Shana Blake Hill (written for the film)
  • "Nessun Dorma (from Turandot)" by Bruce Sledge
  • "If We Get Through This" by Tabitha Fair

It could be argued that the mix of an opera aria, gospel and original vocal pieces sits oddly beside a score built for a thriller about a lost nuclear bomb, but that range is part of what sets this soundtrack apart from the other Jack Ryan films. If you want to compare it with the other scores, start with the Goldsmith tracks and then listen to how each composer handles the same hero.

The Sum of All Fears Plot, Step by StepSpoilers

The full plot of The Sum of All Fears runs in three stages: the bomb changes hands, it detonates in Baltimore, and Ryan talks two governments back from the brink. Spoilers follow.

First, Dressler's network takes the bomb from the arms trafficker who bought it. Second, Ryan follows clues that it has reached the United States, but he cannot stop it being shipped to Baltimore. Third, it explodes at a football game, destroying much of the city and fatally wounding Cabot.

The fallout is political before it is military. A Russian general attacks a US aircraft carrier, and President Fowler, believing Russia is to blame, orders a retaliatory strike. Ryan is the one person pulling the other way. He works out from the bomb's isotopes that the material came from the US rather than from Russia, which undercuts the assumption driving both governments toward war. Meanwhile, CIA operative John Clark finds the dying arms dealer Ghazi in Syria, and the agency then hacks the dealer's computer, which points to Dressler.

With that evidence, Ryan reaches Nemerov, who agrees to stand down, and Fowler does the same, so the war is avoided. The people behind the plot are killed. Fowler and Nemerov then announce new steps against weapons proliferation. In the final beat, Ryan's adviser Anatoli Grushkov turns out to be the informant known as Spinnaker, and he gives Ryan's fiancée Catherine an engagement gift.

Release Dates and Rollout

The Sum of All Fears opened in US theaters on May 31, 2002, then reached the UK on August 16 and Australia on August 29, according to Box Office Mojo. The film was rated PG-13 in the US, 12 in the UK and M in Australia.

In the US it opened to $31.2 million and finished with about $119 million domestic. Another $75 million came from international markets, for about $194 million worldwide on a $68 million budget. That worldwide total sits above Patriot Games and below Clear and Present Danger. Our Jack Ryan box office page sets all five films side by side.

The home video release followed on October 29, 2002, according to The Numbers.

The Sum of All Fears Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of The Sum of All Fears comes down to one decision: two presidents choose to stand down instead of retaliating. Ryan persuades the Russian president to stop, the US president follows, and the two countries step back from war. The group behind the plot is hunted down and killed, and Fowler and Nemerov publicly announce measures to reduce nuclear proliferation.

Why does the war stop? Because the evidence changes. The isotope analysis shows the material in the Baltimore bomb came from the US rather than Russia, and the agency's hack of the computer belonging to the dying arms dealer Ghazi points to Dressler. Once both leaders see that the attack was staged by a third party, the logic for retaliation falls apart. It is a lot like two drivers about to swap insurance details after a crash, only to find the dashcam footage shows a third car caused it.

What about the last scene? Ryan is left in a more settled place, with Catherine as his fiancée, and he stays in the CIA. The reveal that Grushkov is the informant known as Spinnaker, along with his engagement gift, closes a small loop on a Russian contact who had been quietly in Ryan's corner. In my opinion, that is the film's way of saying the trust Ryan built across the Russian side was real, though the film does not spell it out.

It could be argued that the film's real story is the shift from analyst to field player. In The Hunt for Red October, the stakes were one submarine. Here the cost is a city, and Ryan carries a burden no desk job prepared him for. That scale is why the final diplomatic scene lands more quietly than a chase would have.

The Sum of All Fears is set across the Golan Heights, Syria and Baltimore. The 1973 prologue plays over the Golan Heights, the scrap collector's discovery is set in Syria, and the bomb goes off at a football game in Baltimore.
